RESUMO Neste trabalho, temos como objetivo investigar como a verdade é apreendida por narradora e ouvintes no podcast Serial. O programa apresenta uma reinvestigação de um caso de assassinato, lançando dúvidas sobre o verdadeiro culpado pelo crime. Seus ouvintes também empreenderam uma busca própria pela verdade, fazendo com que Serial tenha se tornado um programa profícuo para analisar as relações de conhecimento que dele emergem. Entendemos esse fenômeno a partir de uma visada ampla que o põe em diálogo com outros gêneros e formatos, como o jornalismo, as histórias de detetive e as séries ficcionais de televisão. Nossa leitura de Serial, assim, não compreende apenas os episódios do podcast, mas o encara como um dos nós de uma rede textual constantemente refigurada pelo próprio programa e seus ouvintes. Para entender como narradora e ouvintes configuram um jogo pela vontade de saber, analisamos essas figuras a partir de suas acepções na literatura, fazendo as devidas adaptações para a análise de um produto em áudio, e colocando em discussão as mudanças objetivadas por Serial ser um produto que circula na internet de forma serializada. Com isso, buscamos discutir a busca pela verdade empreendida pelo podcast e a instauração da dúvida como elemento central, entendendo as estratégias que a narradora utiliza para se colocar como figura dotada de confiabilidade, e as ações realizadas pelos ouvintes, que buscam preencher e alargar as lacunas oferecidas por Serial. Palavras-chave: Serial. Podcast. Narrador. Confiabilidade. Dúvida. ABSTRACT This work aims to investigate how truth is understood by the narrator and listeners of the Serial podcast. The show features a reinvestigation of a murder case, casting doubts about the real culprit of the crime. Its listeners have also undertaken a search for the truth, making Serial a fruitful program to analyze the knowledge relations that emerge. We understand this phenomenon from a broad perspective that puts it in dialogue with other genres and formats, such as journalism, detective stories and fictional television series. Thus, our reading of Serial does not only comprehend the podcast’s episodes, but views it as one of the nodes of a textual network constantly refigured by the program itself and its listeners. To understand how the narrator and listeners establish a game for the willingness to know, we analyze these figures from their origins in literature, making the appropriate adaptations for the analysis of an audio product, and putting in discussion the changes made by the fact that Serial is a product that circulates on the internet, in a serialized way. With this, we seek to discuss the search for truth carried out by the podcast and the introduction of doubt as a central element, understanding the strategies that the narrator uses to put herself as a figure endowed with reliability, and the actions carried out by the listeners, who seek to fill and extend the gaps offered by Serial. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

I find that Koenig uses more creaky voice on her podcast Serial than in an interview context. Additionally, her creaky voice in the interview occurs in specific contexts related to her work as a journalist. Based on analyses of how phonetic features can construct certain personae, I argue that Koenig may be designing her speech to construct a journalistic persona with her use of creaky voice. 1 Introduction Podcasts are episodic audio series that are typically downloaded and streamed. In purely auditory mediums like podcasts and radio, hosts must connect with their audience through only their voice. While there are many linguistic studies about radio and radio hosts (e.g., Rodero 2014), there are very few studies on the language of podcasting and podcast hosts. In 2014, the creators of the popular American radio show This American Life uploaded the first episode of the podcast Serial, created and hosted by journalist and radio personality Sarah Koenig. Years after its initial release, Serial holds the record for the most listened to podcast of all time and had been downloaded over 320 million times as of its third season in late 2018 (Quah 2018).

This book reminds me of being at a campfire with your friends and listening to everyone's crazy stories...except the fact that these stories are at least 200% better. The concept is great and the drawings are awesome. My niece kept asking me what was so funny...apparently I was laughing out loud more than I realized. Many of the stories are funny, some are sad, others just reflective. Planning on buying another copy as a gift for my graphic novel loving friend as I think he would appreciate it on many levels. You won't regret the purchase.
