50Th ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020 50th ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020 COMPILED BY INTERNAL QUALITY ASSURANCE CELL GURU NANAK DEV UNIVERSITY A M R I T S A R Message GOVERNOR It gives me immense pleasure to learn that Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar is publishing its 50th Annual Report in which the University's year long achievements, programmes and significant academic and extra- curricular events have been highlighted. For any university, the advancement made every year works as a momentous message that the institution is on the path of constructing an influential community. The Annual Report, 2019 becomes all the more significant as it is a momentous occasion for university to witness a completion of its 50 years of continuous contribution to strengthening and augmenting the life of its students, society and nation. Since its inception, Guru Nanak Dev University is imparting quality education and is playing a salutary role in harmonizing the socio-economic fabric of the nation. This notable and enthusiastic institution has attained brilliance by engaging ingenious and extraordinary ways of learning, by following its entrenched traditions, and by virtue of its programmes and values that it indoctrinates in its students. It has entered into its glorious fiftieth year with the 'Category-I' Status and Grade 'A++'. It is remarkable that academically Guru Nanak Dev University has etched a niche for itself in the field of higher education in the country. It is one of the top-ranking universities of North India. It has improved its NIRF ranking by securing 55th position amongst all universities in 2019 from 80th in 2017. It is also placed among the top 8.7% universities of the world as evaluated by Centre for World University Ranking (CWUR).As a research oriented institution, GNDU aims to fortify and stimulate the vein for exploration to achieve global distinction and excellence. Guru Nanak Dev University has already attained the status of “University with Potential for Excellence”, the departments of Sports Medicine and Life Sciences have been acknowledged as “Centre of Potential for Excellence in a Particular Area”. It is praiseworthy that as a most proper tribute to the memory of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the university is making determined efforts to cater to the needs of the rural and educationally and economically backward areas as well. The report also states that a large number of students from the university and its regional campuses have been recruited in renowned Indian and multinational companies. I am sure that the 50th Annual Report, 2019 is an evidence of the university's ceaseless efforts to provide all-encompassing education that amplifies well-organized thinking, ignites steadiness, kindles all-inclusive perception and cultivates multi-cultural consciousness that transcends social, religious and regional predispositions. (V.P. Singh Badnore) Message VICE CHANCELLOR 2019, being the Golden Jubilee Year of Guru Nanak Dev University, has been the year of renovation, make-over, improvement, elevation and optimistic enlargement in both academic and non-academic fields. This year's annual report reveals an amazing unfolding of time driven by transformations, reorganizations, research excellences, community partnerships, and academic achievements. With a reverent intention to acquaint the younger generation with their cultural roots, GNDU entered its 50th year with the publication of a magnificent coffee table book, Amritsar and Guru Nanak Dev University: The Contours of Inheritance. Drawing upon records and colloquial interactions, the book explores into legends and history of this mesmerizing city, and steers through the university exploring the journey of the institution from 1969 to the present times. The University, a cradle of academic proficiency committed to the evolution of knowledge, to spread of education, to reinforcement and motivation of the vein for exploration to achieve global distinction and excellence, has also made Youth Festivals a regular feature of every academic year, particularly 2019 by organizing the 35th North Zone Inter-University Youth Festival during December 25 to 29, 2019 on campus. This distinguished and esteemed seat of learning established in 1969 after the name of the first Sikh Guru, closely focuses on students' life, learning, research and innovation. The education system needs continuous dynamism to prepare the students for the competitive world. Guru Nanak Dev University is consistently engaged in harnessing capabilities of the teachers and students to pave the way for its learners towards right direction enabling them to face day to day challenges. Through a holistic development of the students, it is preparing them at every step for the journey of life. The syllabi are regularly updated hence, gearing the students to handle the work environment locally as well as globally. The dedicated faculty of GNDU provides excellent and highest quality of teaching. It offers immense satisfaction when the great work of university is applauded and recognized by educational agencies. It is highly honourable that GNDU has been conferred with Category-I Status by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, along with Grade 'A++'by NAAC. Also the Swachh Campus Ranking of Higher Education Institutions 2019, ranks GNDU as the 2nd cleanest Government Residential Universities. Since day one, Guru Nanak Dev University is committed to ideals of excellence. It has bagged huge grants from the Government of India for various fields that include Rs. 2.5 Crores for development of infrastructure from MHRD, Rs. 25 Crores for MYAS-GNDU Department, Rs 5 Crores for upgrading of auditorium and FDC, Rs. 7 Crores for providing facilities in FDC, Rs. 5.7 Crores for School of Education, and support for Botanical Garden. This year, the focus being on providing better working conditions to the students, revamping of the reading room in the main library has been done. In order to provide parking space for the students and the visitors, the university has constructed new parking areas near the entry gates. Guru Nanak Dev University has undertaken the process of digitization related to administration, library records and research keeping in mind the contemporary challenges and needs. The university has consistently focused on the best and to fulfill its vision it has taken numerous steps forward. In the mission for distinction, the university through its print and digital media is dedicated to offer openings to the students to be a part of numerous drill programmes, congresses, conferences, seminars, and workshops. Several MoU's and collaborations have been signed between Guru Nanak Dev University and International, National and private organizations and institutes. The university's improved ranking, innovation of environment friendly techniques, and introduction of various employee and student beneficiary schemes proves that GNDU adheres strongly to its founding principles. The list of measures introduced by Guru Nanak Dev University is exemplary in itself, like forming various clubs for the students to encourage their participation, POS machines for cashless payments, introducing eco- friendly and pollution free bi-cycles and e-rickshaws, creating a Facilitation Centre, a gymnasium with state-of-the-art equipment and psychological counseling centre for its students' physical and mental well-being. Guru Nanak Dev University is a beacon of light in the field of education standing tall year after year with its worthy credentials, successful achievements and will continue to excel with its forward looking approach. Like the present year's annual report which celebrates Guru Nanak Dev University's pursuance of its motto with a persistent devotion to universal human values, the year ahead will surely be full of sanguinity. I am sure that Guru Nanak Dev University shall make continuous endeavours to achieve its pledge for an upward journey towards value based learning.
