Ampleforth Abbey | AMPLEFORTH ABBEY PASTORAL PROGRAMME 2020 AMPLEFORTH ABBEY PASTORAL PROGRAMME 2020 You are welcome: “Come and See” “Master, where do you live?” “Come and see” said Jesus. (John 1:39) A warm greeting to all our of guests and friends. This year has been designated “The Year of the Word”, a year to celebrate the gift of God’s sharing of his life with us in the scriptures. I am reminded of Christ’s promise in Saint John’s gospel: “If you make my word your home, you will truly be my disciples, and you will come to know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”(John 8:31) As you look through this brochure you will notice a number of events focusing on the Word of God in different ways. In particular I would like to draw your attention to a series of monthly day events set aside to explore different ways of approaching and understanding the Word. There are also a series retreat days that are entitled Friends of Hospitality. A number of different people have shared time together on retreat at Ampleforth and discovered friends along the way. There is the beginning of a sort of community of retreat goers. Many people would like to be able to return more regularly and spend time with familiar faces – to strengthen that sense of community, of a journey shared. The days have a very simple structure: coffee – a talk – some space for reflection, conversation or relaxation – a meal together – and some time for sharing and prayer together at the end. Whether you are a “seasoned” retreat goer, or someone who simply finds the possibility attractive, do please get in touch with us! By now the monastic community is well and truly settled back into the monastery and it is a particular joy to be able to welcome guests to join our prayer in the Abbey Church. May I take this opportunity on behalf of the monastic community to wish you every blessing throughout this year and for those of you able to come for a visit we look forward very much to welcoming you. With every best wish, Fr Kevin Hayden OSB Dean of Hospitality 2 AMPLEFORTH ABBEY PASTORAL PROGRAMME 2020 Contents Welcome Inside Front Cover Meet our Pastoral Team 4 A Chance to Relax and Reflect 6 The Year of the God Who Speaks 8 Friends of Ampleforth Hospitality 10 The Path of Life 11 An Invitation to University Students 12 Parish Groups & Self-Led Retreats 12 School Groups 13 Easter Triduum 14 Retreats 15-27 Retreat Booking Enquiry Form 28 The Abbey Shop 29 The Abbey Tea Room 30 The Visitor Centre 31 3 AMPLEFORTH ABBEY PASTORAL PROGRAMME 2020 Meet our Pastoral Team Fr Kevin Hayden OSB Fr Oswald McBride OSB Fr Kevin brings to his retreat work a wide range of Fr Oswald joined the Ampleforth Community in experience both as a monk and as a diocesan priest. 1991. • Alpha: Another Road to Rome?
Alpha: Another Road To Rome? Commentary by Roger Oakland www.understandthetimes.org The Alpha program, founded by Nicky Gumbel, a former Oxford educated barrister-turned-Anglican priest has become very popular in North America. A brochure published for the Alpha Texas Conference in Austin, Texas, scheduled for January 8th and 9th, 1998 detailed the goals and objectives of the course. It stated: The Alpha Course is a ten-week practical introduction to the Christian faith. It is designed primarily for non-church goers and those who have recently become Christians. Alpha is a flexible and practical model that can work for a group of any size. Churches and Christian organizations of every background and denomination are discovering it to be a simple and effective way of presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ in a non- threatening manner for people of all walks of life.[1] Charisma, December 1999, also contained an article that provided additional information about the Alpha program and how it is being promoted and marketed. The article, written by journalist Clive Price titled “Alpha Course Supporters Urge British To Party With God On New Year’s Eve” was introduced the following way: Lying on a bed of nails? That does not sound like the most orthodox way of spearheading a $1.6 million evangelistic media campaign for the closing days of the twentieth century. But as British pastor Sandy Miller puts it, the aim of the Alpha Project’s millennium initiative is to help people “get the point” of the year 2000.[2] Although Nicky Gumbel’s Alpha course was founded at Holy Trinity Brompton in 1991, the effectiveness of the course was not realized until a few years later after the “Toronto Blessing” was transported to England from Canada in May of 1994.
