16. FOREIGN SHORT MUSKET OR . Muzzle loader, percussion cap; brass mounts; Lock stamped with a "crown" and the initials "S. P. & S. R." and a well- formed letter "A" in brass inlaid into the stock of wood in the natural finish. Length 28% in.

17. RUSSIAN ENFIELD. Made in England: Made for the Russian Government, brass hammer guard and tip, oval patch box, swivel ramrod, length 33 in. (Dent in stock.)

18. SWISS BREECH LOADING "TELESCOPE" RIFLE. 32% in. blued steel barrel and lock marked "Warren fabrik, Bern, 188899 M. 78"; ramrod and finely marked wood stock. With bolt and magazine mechanism, the barrel nearly encased in wood, rod bayonet, etc., resembling the Magazine Rifle adopted in America in 1903.

19. SWISS . Made in Thun by W. V. Steiger. No. 26430. Bolt and magazine mechanism, blued steel barrel, bayonet and ramrod, checked stock, good condition.

20. CONFEDERATE MUSKET. Stamped "Ala 1864" and "Dickson, Nelson & Co. C. S.", 33 inch brass mounted rifled barrel and patch-box, stock and brass butt, dented, brass tipped ramrod. Rare Confederate gun, not described in the Lowell collection. (Illustrated; see Frontispiece)

21. FLINT LOCK KENTUCKY RIFLE. Curly maple stock, brass mounts and patch-box brass-tipped ; wood ramrod. Lock marked "Jos. C. Randall, warranted," barrel marked "W. P. J." One of the famous old Kentucky "Tigers"—so called from the striped maple mount—with full length octagon barrel and cheek piece. Fine condition. (Illustrated; see Frontispiece)

23. BALL'S BREECH LOADING RIFLED CARBINE. A blued steel Magazine Gun, with 7-shot, combustible cart- ridge, calibre .56, marked "E. G. Lamson & Co., Windsor, Vt." U. S. Balls Patent, June 23, 1863 and Mar. 16; 1864; ramrod.

Rare example, in fine condition ; the breech block so 1 made that when once closed it cannot be opened until the hammer is down operated ; by a lever underneath, with the magazine under the barrel and loading at the rear. 4 THE WALP OLE GALLERIES

24. BALLARD'S BREECH LOADING RIFLED CARBINE. Calibre .44, metallic or paper cartridge, centre fire, stamped

"Ballard's Patent, Nov. 5, 1861" and "Merwin & Bray, N. Y. Agts." ; Illustrated in the Lowell catalogue.

25. ENGLISH CARBINE. Marked "Barnett London" Calibre .57, percussion, has nipple protector held by a chain fastened to the guard-bow, swivel- ramrod; iron-mounted, carved with "W. W." on stock. Made in London for the Civil War—a light carbine, very popular on both sides. Illustrated in the U. S. Cartridge Company collection.

26. BARNETT SNYDER RIFLE. Made by Barnett, London, with Snyder patent, ramrod,

length 33^4 m -> stock shows dents and scratched initials.

27. BROOKS GIBBS PATENT CARBINE. Dated 1856. Metallic Cartridge, breech loader, made in New York. Leaf sights, marked "L. H. Gibbs patent, Jan. 8, 1856" and "Win. F. Brooks, Manfr's, New York." Very rare carbine, calibre about .53.

28. BROWNS CONVERTED ENFIELD (ENGLISH) RIFLE.

Bolt breech loader with bayonet, blued barrel, ramrod ; brass trigger guard and stock cap; length 33^ in.

29. BREECH-LOADING PIN-SHOT CARBINE. No name of maker but resembles No. 230 of the Lowell Col- lection having the barrel connected with the butt by a hinge below and held by a long spring on top of the barrel. The spring is lifted by a lever behind the trigger. Well made and good condition.

30. BURNSIDE BREECH LOADING RIFLED CARBINE.

Metallic cartridge, calibre .50 ; blued steel, stamped "Burn- side Rifle Co., Providence, R. I." Model of 1862. A movable is pivoted in front under the barrel, in closing, the breech-block has a forward movement, pushing the cartridge which is tapering into the barrel. A very popular light carbine of the Civil War.

34. OLD CHARLEVILLE FLINT LOCK MUSKET. 1763. Relic of the American Revolution. These old guns, brought over by La Fayette, served as the model for the original U. S. Springfields. This veteran is stamped "Charleville" on lock with "R" above it and "D" on stock. Barrel 45y2 inches. Calibre 59. No bayonet. Condition very fair. Model of 1763. (Illustrated)

35. THE RARE W. W. MARSTON CARBINE. One of the scarcest of American pieces. In very good cleaned condition. One of the best authorities says of this carbine This uses the paper cartridge, which is unlike the one used in his pistol, the pistol cartridge being made of heavy cardboard loaded with gun cotton. It operates with under lever somewhat similar to the Sharp carbine. The reason I am using the above comparison is be- cause this is the first one to be offered at auction, and, indeed, the only one I have seen. Without doubt an extremely rare piece. (Illustrated)

37. PEABODY-MARTINI BREECH LOADING SPORTING RIFLE. .44 calibre. "M'f'd. by the Providence Tool Co., Prov. R. I." Low number (363). Engraved lock- plate "What cheer." 32 inch barrel, half octagon, fine sporting sight. Almost fac- tory condition. Scarce.

38 BREECH LOADING COMBUSTIBLE CARTRIDGE CAR- BINE. Made by the Mass. Arms Co., Chicopee Falls, Mass., with Smith's Patent, June 23, 1857, and lock-plate marked "Address Poultney & Trimble, U. S. A." 30-inch barrel op- erating from a lever at the top. Fine condition.

39. BREECH LOADING COMBUSTIBLE CARTRIDGE CAR- BINE. Manufactured by the Mass. Arms Co., Chicopee Falls, Mass., with Smith's patent, June 28, 1857, and marked on the lock- plate "Address Poultney & Trimble, Baltimore, U. S. A." Op- erates from a lever at the top.

41. COLT'S CIVIL WAR MUSKET AND BAYONET. Made in Hartford, Connecticut, 1864. In very fine condi- tion percussion cap, 40-inch barrel marked "steel" and dated ; 1864, also stamp "Colt's Pt. F. A. Mfg. Co., Hartford, Ct." Ramrod.

42. COLT REVOLVING SPORTING RIFLE. .40 calibre. Fluted . Five shot, 27-inch barrel. Fine condition. Ramrod missing. 2 piece cleaning rod in butt. "Colt's Patent Sept. 10, 1850." Scarce.

43. COLT REVOLVING MUSKET. Civil war period. Complete 5 shot, .50 calibre. Stamped "Col. Colt, Hartford, Ct. U. S. A. Colts Pat. Nov. 24th, 1857" No. 3130. When the old paper cartridges were used old sol- diers said that all the shots were apt to go off at once, when the chambers got hot, and they used the loading lever as a hand hold for safety. Fine condition. Scarce.

44. "COSMOPOLITAN BREECH LOADING RIFLED CAR- BINE." Cross patent of 1859. Calibre .50, made in Hamilton, Ohio. Similar to No. 281 but carrying a smaller shell. ;

45. CONFEDERATE MUSKET. Marked "C. Chapman." Brass mounted, 33 inch rifled bar- rel, calibre .54, all parts stamped "8", with ramrod. Few dents in the stock and scratched "J- R- R-" Genuine Confederate Muzzle Loader. Very rare.

46. U. S. DERINGER. Philadelphia, 1842. Converted from flint lock to percussion lock, and stock, both dated 1842. Oval patch box, ramrod, length 36 in., two notches deep in the stock.

47. ENFIELD (TOWER) CARBINE. Dated 1861. Percussion, stamped with crown and "Tower 1861"; swivel

ramrod, 12-inch barrel ; stock with circular stamp of "Bentley & Playfair," makers, and scratched with name of owner "E. D. Felton," etc.

48. SHORT ENFIELD (ENGLISH) RIFLED MUSKET. Dat- ed 1864.

Muzzle Loader Tower Gun ; blued steel with ramrod. Stamp- ed on lock "Crown" and "Tower 1864", butt marked "V. P. E. I. 33" and incised circular stamps on stock "Birmingham 1864, W. O." arrow and crown. Percussion with safety cone protector held by a chain fastened to the trigger guard.

49. ENGLISH ENFIELD RIFLED MUSKET. Dated 1860 on lock. Breech loader, metallic cartridge; barrel 35 1/8, with ba} r -

onet ; stock with Enfield stamp. Said to have been dug from a trench in the late Boer War and supposed to have been used in the previous Boer War. Purchased in 1911 from the owner of Joyce's Cave, Bermuda.

50. ENFIELD (ENGLISH) RIFLE MUSKET. Stamped "Tower 1862" and crown. Muzzle Loader Tower Gun with bayonet, percussion, ramrod, and gun-strap. Length 39 in. Calibre .57.

51. ENFIELD RIFLE. E. P. Bond marked on Lock Plate percussion length 39 in. ; ramrod with safety cone protector held, by a chain fastened to the trigger guard, calibre .57.

52. ENFIELD HAMMERLESS BREECH LOADER RIFLE. Metallic cartridge. Dated 1878. Marked "Enfield II. 1878," and with Enfield seal on the stock swivel. Ramrod, length 28^ in. Center fire, operated by a lever underneath.

54. TRIPLETT & SCOTT BREECH LOADING RIFLED CAR- BINE. (1864) Blued steel, metallic cartridge, rim fire, Triplett's Patent of 1864, marked "Meriden Mfg. Co., Meriden, Conn." The noted "Kentucky" (and so stamped) magazine carbine. Loads from the front of butt, the barrel revolves on an axis parallel to the barrel until it opens the magazine and loads. The Extractor is worked the rotation of the barrel. by In Fine Condition ; Illus- trated in the Lowell Catalogue. (Illustrated) 55. WATERS PATENT BREECH LOADING CARBINE. Brass mounts, combustible cartridge, made in Milbury, Mass., no date; stamped "A. H. Waters & Co., Milbury, Mass."

Very rare ; not listed in the Lowell Catalgoue. Asa Waters of Sutton (now Milbury) was a licensed private Armorer of the Gov- ernment in 1808 as one of the six most prominent gunmakers in the country. A Masonic Sign is cut near the butt of the stock. (Illustrated) 56. FLINT-LOCK MUSKET. ENGLISH. Main spring on outside of lock. Initials C. R. and date on barrel 1798. Date said to have been put on by owner. Gun supposed to have been made about 1745. Checked grip, brass mounts, band replaced with wire; ivory tip to stock, no ramrod.

57. FAYETTEVI LLE CONFEDERATE RIFLE. Dated 1863. C. S. A. Confederate States of America, marked on Shoul- der. Brass mounts, percussion, calibre 58. Length 33 in. The machinery for making was moved from Harper's Ferry to Fayetteville, N. C, by the Confederate Government in 1861. The die used to stamp the eagle and "C. S. A." came from Harper's Ferry. The "U. S.", which was originally under the eagle, was cut out and "C. S. A." with the "S." inverted were "keyed" in. 58. GALLAGHER'S BREECH LOADING RIFLED CARBINE. Combustible cartridge, all steel with wood butt only, Galla- gher's Patent, July 17, 1860, and also marked "Richardson & Overman's Arms Co., Philadelphia, Pa."; operates from un- derneath and steel spring from butt-plate. Name cut cn butt "Louis Southworth, Co. 3, 111. Cav." Very rare Civil War association piece. GUNS 9

59. GALLAGHER'S BREECH LOADING RIFLED CARBINE. Metallic Cartridge, patent of 1860. Similar to the preceding.

60. GREENE'S PATENT RIFLE. 1857. Bolt action, breech loader, blued steel barrel and mounts, stamped "Greene's Patent, Nov. 4, 1857," operated by a ham- mer under the barrel. Cal. .535, the cartridges had the in the rear, so there were always two bullets in the gun when loaded, the rear acting as a gas-check. Length of barrel 35 1/16 in., a few dents on stock, otherwise good condition. (Made at Millbury, Mass.)

61. J. H. HALL RIFLE. Harper's Ferry, 1839. Combustible Cartridge, Breech Load-

er with Bayonet. Centre fire ; ramrod.

62. HALL PERCUSSION BREECH LOADING CARBINE MUSKETOON.

Made by J. H. Hall and dated 1839, ramrod, bayonet and hooked catch. Hall was the inventor of the breech-loader as early as 1811.

63. HARPER'S FERRY MUZZLE LOADING MUSKET. Percussion, "Harper's Ferry 1852" on lock; 40-inch barrel dated 1847 with bayonet and ramrod. "T. C. Watts" cut in the stock.

64. HARPER'S FERRY BREECH-LOADER. Dated 1832, Hall's patent, metallic cartridge, percussion, made at Harper's Ferry in 1832; bayonet. One of the very earliest breech loaders and the first to be patented in the .

65. HARPER'S FERRY TAPE LOCK. Dated, 1857. Muzzle loader, 40 inch octagon, dated 1857, brass butt-tang, ramrod barrel.

66. HARPER'S FERRY MUSKET. Dated 1854. Muzzle loader, brass mounts and patch-box, length 32 in., ramrod.

67. FIARPER'S FERRY U. S. TAPE LOCK RIFLE. Dated 1859, ramrod, length 33 in., patch-box.

68. HARPER'S FERRY GUN. Converted from Flint Lock U. S. Date 1820. With bayonet and in good condition, length 41^4 in. TAPE- 69 JENKS' CARBINE. U. S. NAVY BREECH LOADING LOCK PERCUSSION. Hammer on side. Made at Herkimer, New York by Reming-

70. JENKS BREECH LOADING NAVY CARBINE. Dated 1845. Hammer on side of the barrel, cocks by opening outward, barrel is opened by drawing back top lever, stamped "Patents, U. S. N. R. C. P. 1845" on barrel and side of lock has "Win. Jenks" and "N. P. Ames, Springfield, Mass." 24 in. barrel.

72. JOSLYN BREECH LOADING RIFLED CARBINE. FIRST MODEL. Dated 1864. Metallic cartridge, barrel of blued steel, stamped "Joslyn Fire Arms Co., Stonington, Conn., 1864." The is hinged and swings to the left for insertion of cartridge, leaf sight; in fine condition.

73. JOSLYN BREECH LOADING RIFLED CARBINE. SEC- OND MODEL. Blued steel. Calibre about .48, metallic cartridge, stamped "Joslyn Fire Arms Co., Stonington, Conn., and patent dates Oct., 1861 and June 24, 1862; stock with dents. Brass band and trigger guard.

75. JOSLYN'S BREECH LOADING RIFLED CARBINE. Metallic cartridge, centre fire "hump" breech swings to left ; lo load. Marked "Joslyn Fire Arms Co., Stonington, Conn." and made under their patents of Oct. 3, 1861 and June 4, 1862. Purchased at St. George, Bermuda, in April, 1911.

76. KYNOCHS PATENT MUSKET MADE IN ASTON, ENG- LAND. Breech Loader, finely made blued barrel, stamped "Knyoch

Gun Factory, Aston" with bolt and magazine mechanism ; ram- rod, length 31 in.

77. LEE-REMINGTON NAVY REPEATING RIFLE. Altered to sporting. 45-70 calibre, model 1879. The model used in the U. S. navy up to the Spanish War. 33 inch bar- rel. Condition good.

78. DOUBLE BARRELLED SHOT GUN. Percussion. Complete. English make. Stamped "Lewis & Tomes." Engraved with pheasants, etc., 28 inch Damascus barrels, about 16 gauge. A good gun in good condition. ;

81. RIFLED CARBINE. MAYNARD'S PATENT, 1851-1859. Breech Loader, Cal. .44, metallic cartridge fired with percus- sion cap partly octagon barrel of blued steel, stamped with ; Dr. 's patents and marked "Mass. Arms Co., Chi- copee Falls, Mass."

83. HARPER'S FERRY FLINT LOCK SMOOTH BORE MUS- KET. Lock marked "Harper's Ferry 1830" and "U. S." with spread eagle. 42 in. barrel marked "U. S.", "T. W." and "P."; trigger guard marked "ABC." 84. WATER'S FLINT LOCK SMOOTH BORE MUSKET. Made by Asa Waters of Millbury, Mass., in 1836 and so

marked, with the 42-inch barrel dated 1824 ; has ramrod and flint. In fine condition. (Illustrated)

85. RARE U. S. FLINT LOCK MUSKET. Marked "N. Haven" within a scroll; made by Eli Whitney Sr., either under the 1789 or 1808 contract. With the brass pan (which did not come into general use until 20 years later), an improvement originating with Whitney; oval-face hammer and the lock with a flat face and flint. Very fine condition. 86. MAYNARD'S BREECH LOADING RIFLED CARBINE. Maynard's patents, 1851-1859 and with Chicopee, Mass. Stamp. Metallic cartridge, and calibre .50. Blued steel barrel.

The top one rifled, about 40 cal., the lower, two inches shorter, about 16 gauge for buckshot charge. A movable nose on hammer fires either charge.

These revolvers were brought over by blockade runners during the Civil War and sold to Confederate officers as high as $200 each. Rare Piece, of unique design and in very fine condition. (Illustrated)

He was a noted inventor and maker of early day firearms and examples of even his later work are becoming very scarce. 291. WINCHESTER RIFLE, 1873 Mode,' .44 calibre. A gun with a sinister record. Complete and in working order, but has had hard usage. A prize winner in the "Old Winchester history contest." Accompanying this piece is a statement written on parchment that the arm was the property of Mitchel Bruno of Vinita, Indian Territory, a half-breed Creek In- dian, who was a desperado and bad man generally. He was captured finally by Deputy U. S. Marshal Wm. Hays, who shot a hole in the magazine of Bruno's gun in effecting his arrest. He was taken to Ft. Smith, Ark., and executed March 6, 1887. 292. WINCHESTER HOTCHKISS RIFLE. Breech Loader, 5 shots with Dummy cartridges, ramrod and bayonet. Several patents, the latest of 1878, blued steel, fired by a centre lock, the firing pin pass- ing through the bolt. Marked with the Hotchkiss patent and "Manufactured by the Winches- ter Repeating Arms Co., New Haven, Conn." etc. 44 THE WALPOLB GALLERIES

293. BRASS MOUNTED "WINDSOR" MUSKET. Dated 1851. Lock stamped "Robbins & Lawrence, Windsor, Vt. 1851," percussion, brass patch-box, blued steel barrel and lock, length 33 in. Original condition and similar to the "," also known as the "Yerger," which was made at Harper's Ferry. The gun is rare as many were altered to breech-loading in 1862.

294. BRASS MOUNTED MUSKET. Dated 1855. With Sword Bayonet, marked "E. Whitney" and "N. Haven, 1855;" 33 inch brass bound barrel, with brass patch-box and brass-tipped ramrod, frightful dent in the stock.

CONDITIONS OF SALE

1. All bids to be per lot. They are executed free of charge by the Walpole Galleries and the items are bought at the lowest price permitted by competitive bids.

2. The highest bidder to be the buyer ; in case of disputed bids the lot shall be resold, but the Auctioneer will use his judg- ment as to the good faith of all claims and his decision will be final. He may also reject any fractional or nominal bid calculated to delay or injuriously affect the sale.

3. Buyers to give their names and addresses and to make such cash payments on account as may be required, in default of which the lots purchased to be immediately resold.

4. Goods bought to be removed at the close op the sale If not so removed, they will be held at the risk of the purchaser and these Galleries will not be responsible if such goods are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed. No deliveries will be made during the sale.

5. Terms Cash. If accounts are not paid at the conclusion of the sale, or, in the case of absent buyers, when bills are rendered, these Galleries reserve the right to dispose of the goods without no- tice to the defaulting buyer and all costs of such re-sale will be charged to the defaulter. This condition is without prejudice to the rights of the Company to enforce the sale contract and collect the amount due without such re-sale at its own option.

6. This catalogue has been compiled by a competent cata- described with care and accuracy loguer ; the various lots offered are and they will be sold not subject to return.

7. The Walpole Galleries, if requested, will forward purchases at the buyer's risk and expense.
