Anyone wishing to know more about Knoxs translation and the problems involved in rendering the sacred Scriptures into the vernacular will be fascinated to hear from the translator himself how he tackled this mammoth project. How, I wondered, could there be a new copy of this Bible, last (re)published in 1963? Was it sitting around wrapped in cellophane in a warehouse? I took a chance and ordered it from Amazon. It came from Baronius Press, London, and it actually is brand, spanking new, having been republished in 2012. This is a leatherbound hardback with one bookmark ribbon. Does it have maps in the back? No. A concordance? No again. Journeys of St. Paul? Negative. But it does have, surprisingly, an introduction by Scott Hahn.Arnold Dunn, who used to regularly attack Ronald Knox in print, was later brought into the Church by him, and became one of the liveliest apologists of his age. However, in his book, And Yet So New, Lunn still attacked Knoxs translation, noting places where the Authorized (King James) read better. Knox might plead no contest, but his hands were tied. The (Latin) Vulgate had always been the Catholic Bible, so he had to produce his vernacular translation from the Vulgate. Knox was, however, acutely aware when the Hebrew or Greek read better or proved more accurate, and notes these instances throughout the notes in this translation.Included with this purchase was the brief book of Knoxs essays, On Englishing the Bible (later republished as Trials of a Translator, in which he provides fascinating insights to the process and problems of translation, and his attempt to produce a literary, not a literal translation. Those new to Catholic Bibles may wonder why there are seven more books in the Old Testament (they were originally in there but were removed during the Reformation, and are now sometimes called Apocryphal Books). Lunn asks in his book why Catholics have to have different names for some Bible Books, and some Bible characters. Knox agrees this is a problem, and his preface says hes changed the names of some personnel to better known ones. But the reason for the odd names is that they are the Latin titles, and the Vulgate was a translation into Latin.I advise the reader to take some other Bible translation better known to them, and open both it and the Knox Bible to the contents page, as a way of comparing the same books. Knox saw his task as helping readers to understand the Bible, not just revere it. Since he undertook this commission in 1936, a great many new translations have appeared, mostly on the Protestant side, usually aspiring to the same goal, but in some cases failing to achieve the literary qualities which make the King James version such likable reading.The most readably literary translation which has been produced is the Revised Standard Version. With new findings such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, scholars sought to revise the already standard versions, upgrade them to 2.0, as it were. The veracity and readability of the RSV has been recognized continually, as other translations have worked from it, among them the ESV on the Protestant side, and the RSV 2CE (RSV 2nd Catholic Edition) on the Catholic side. But the forerunner in the effort to produce a readably literary, yet clear and cogent vernacular translation began here, with the Knox Bible. The King James Version will likely remain for many years to come as the official Bible of the LDS church, and it will continue to be tolerably well understood by "study and also by faith." Until we learn enough Hebrew to do so, however, it may be that all of the translation efforts will help us in our study.     The Origins of the Bible in English John Samaha How did the Bible come to us in English? The Old Testament writings were inscribed in Hebrew and other ancient languages. We know that the Good News was passed on by word of mouth immediately after the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. Only decades later was the oral tradition put into written form, primarily in Greek. By the fifth century st. Jerome had translated the Bible into Latin. This was called the Latin Vulgate. In these pre-medieval times all writings were copied by hand. The whole of the Holy Bible did not appear in English until the middle of the second millennium. It was a slow and troubled accomplishment. The production of the Bible emerged from a complicated past filled with intrigue and controversy, persecution and martyrdom. What happened? At best, translation is a difficult and tricky task. An Italian adage says the translator is a traitor. In those early times it was a matter of life and death embroiled in historical, cultural, political, and religious clashes. But from that turmoil in those tumultuous times by dint of persevering and dedicated scholars the first English translations sa~ light of day. Briefly, this is what happened. Christianity arrived on the shores of England in the seventh century in the person of St. Augustine of Canterbury and the missionary efforts that followed. Already at that time Caedmon, an illiterate herdsman, sang the Good News in Anglo-Saxon poetry. In the next century other preachers continued to provide biblical translations of sorts.

    BIBLE TRANSLATIONS: THE LINK BETWEEN EXEGESIS AND EXPOSITORY PREACHING1 Robert L. Thomas Professor of New Testament Language and Literature The Master's Seminary Expository preaching presupposes the goal of teaching an audience the meaning of the passage on which the sermon is based. Two types of Bible translations are available as "textbooks" the preacher may use in accomplishing this task. One type follows the original languages of Scripture inform and vocabulary insofar as possible without doing violence to English usage. The other type is not so much governed by phraseology in the original languages, but accommodates itself to contemporary usage of the language into which the translation is made. It is possible with a fair degree of objectivity to measure how far each translation deviates from the original languages. The greater degree of deviation inevitably reflects a higher proportion of interpretation on the translator's part. Regardless of the accuracy of the interpretation, the preacher will at times disagree with it and have to devote valuable sermon time to correcting the text. The best choice of translations on which to base expository preaching is, therefore, one which more literally follows the original languages and excludes as much human interpretation as possible. * * * * * English versions of the Bible can be classified in different ways. They can be classified in regard to historical origin, in regard to textual basis, in regard to theological bias, and in regard to usage of the English language. SALOM Australasian Missionary College Cooranbong, New South Wales, Australia The publication of a major translation of the Bible is in- evitably greeted by a rash of book reviews, many of which are distinguished by their snap judgements and subjective evaluations. The publication of the New English Bible (hence- forth referred to as NEB) was no exception. However, in the intervening period since publication, the NEB has been settling into its niche in the Bible translation scene. It is evident that it will not oust the King James Version (= KJV) from its position of affection with the Bible-reading public, and it is possible that it may not even prove a rival to some of the other recent translations (at least, not in non-British countries). But it has made an important contribution to the development of English translations and has assured itself of a lasting role in this field. Now that the hubub of pre- and post-publication publicity has died away, it is time for dispassionate evaluations of the new translation as a translation. The success of this transla- tion, after all, must ultimately be decided, not by the loudness of public acclaim but by the adequacy with which it represents the sense of the original. This can only be determined by detailed examinations of the translation with reference to the Greek. It is thus not the primary purpose of this paper to criticize the theory of translation adopted by the NEB Committee, but rather, having accepted their own aims in translation, to judge the success with which they have fulfilled these aims.

Easy readability can enhance church worship and participation, and personal Bible study. It also encourages children and youth to discover the Bible for themselves, perhaps for the very first time. CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH BIBLE (CEV) A rendering of the intent of the Hebrew and Greek text published in 1995 by the American Bible Society. It uses inclusive gender language and is sensitive to concerns over Jewish sensitivities. There is some controversy over this version's claim to contain no anti-Judaism since there are biblical texts which seem, in the original, to express such sentiments. The interpretive translation strategy eliminates these and sometimes masks the language of the original writer.
