At a first glance, Afrofuturism may sound like an oxymoron. “Afro” and “Futurism” are likely to be considered as terms in opposition, the former which used to evoke images of primitivism and backwardness, the latter – ever since F. T. Marinetti’s definition in 1909 – celebrating instead speed and modernity. It is precisely to challenge this assumption that Afrofuturism works on a metaphorical level to reject a number of clichés that have commonly referred to people of African descent. Using a wide range of different genres and media, the creative contribution of Afrofuturist writers, musicians, artists, filmmakers and critics challenges the stereotypical historical view routinely applied to the Black Atlantic experience and proposes counter-histories that reconsider the role of black people in the Western society in the past and imagine alternative roles in the future. The paper aims to consider the different languages of Afrofuturism: music (Sun Ra), visual arts (Basquiat), film (John Coney’s Space is the Place) and especially literature − proto-Afrofuturist fiction such as W. E. B. Du Bois’s short story “The Comet” (1920) and more recent examples such as Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man (1952) and Octavia E. -
Pan-African History: Political Figures from Africa and The
Pan-African History Pan-Africanism, the perception by people of African origins and descent that they have interests in common, has been an important by-product of colonialism and the enslavement of African peoples by Europeans. Though it has taken a variety of forms over the two centuries of its fight for equality and against economic exploitation, commonality has been a unifying theme for many Black people, resulting for example in the Back-to-Africa movement in the United States but also in nationalist beliefs such as an African ‘supra-nation’. Pan-African History brings together Pan-Africanist thinkers and activists from the Anglophone and Francophone worlds of the past two hundred years. Included are well-known figures such as Malcolm X, W.E.B. Du Bois, Frantz Fanon, Kwame Nkrumah, and Martin Delany, and the authors’ original research on lesser-known figures such as Constance Cummings-John and Dusé Mohamed Ali reveals exciting new aspects of Pan-Africanism. Hakim Adi is Senior Lecturer in African and Black British History at Middlesex University, London. He is a founder member and currently Chair of the Black and Asian Studies Association and is the author of West Africans in Britain 1900–1960: Nationalism, Pan-Africanism and Communism (1998) and (with M. Sherwood) The 1945 Manchester Pan-African Congress Revisited (1995). Marika Sherwood is a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, University of London. She is a founder member and Secretary of the Black and Asian Studies Association; her most recent books are Claudia Jones: A Life in Exile (2000) and Kwame Nkrumah: The Years Abroad 1935–1947 (1996). -

Du Bois’s Proto-Afrofuturist Short Fiction: «The Comet» Adriano Elia (Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Italia) Abstract This article examines W.E.B. Du Bois’s short story «The Comet» in the light of the Afrofutur- ist movement, a transnational and interdisciplinary, theoretical and literary-cultural enterprise that has endeavoured to rethink the history of Black civilisation in order to imagine a different, better, future. A remarkable example of post-apocalyptic, speculative and proto-Afrofuturist short fiction, «The Comet» functions as a fictional counterpart of the influential key concepts – double conscious- ness, the color line and the veil – previously introduced by Du Bois and it also foreshadows further critical issues and tropes that would be developed later, namely Fanon’s psychology of racism and Ellison’s metaphor of invisibility. Moreover, as a proto-Afrofuturist work of fiction, the story prefigures the post-apocalyptic worlds of Samuel R. Delany and Octavia Butler and becomes a parable in which the supernatural element of the toxic comet allows for interesting speculations on the alienation experienced by people of African descent. Du Bois by examining seminal essays in his oeuvre and with a dedicated focus on his last work of fiction, The Black Flame. In his political aesthetics, Du Bois brings aesthetic theory into direct conversation with the social and political circumstances of his time, particularly the state of race relations in nineteenth- and twentieth-century America. Art becomes a medium for African-American expression, and consequently, a means to challenge racist propaganda and encourage social freedom and uplift. The Black Flame trilogy, published in the last years of Du Bois’s life, remains an understudied, yet monumental, work of history and fiction. The trilogy stands as the culmination of Du Bois’s thought and research, and as such, is an indispensable resource to understand the evolution and final formulation of his politico-aesthetic theory. This thesis traces the development of Du Bois’s political aesthetics through early works such as The Souls of Black Folk, and Du Bois’s mid-period in works such as Darkwater and “The Criteria of Negro Art.” Importantly, I connect the author’s political aesthetic project to the contemporary transformative aesthetics movement. -

Michael Burawoy Fall 2018 Sociology 103 W.E.B. DU BOIS AND SOCIAL THEORY This is a course in advanced social theory, devoted to the writings of W.E.B. Du Bois (1868- 1963). Du Bois was one of the greatest intellectuals of the twentieth century. As a scholar his writings included the founding of urban sociology, the innovative examination of race, and the reconstruction of US history from the stand point of African Americans. He was educated at Fisk University, then Harvard, spending time at the University of Berlin. He was the first African American to receive a PhD degree from Harvard. He twice held a position as sociology professor at Atlanta University. He was also a poet, novelist and dramatist. As an activist he was a founder of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909, the editor of NAACP’s monthly magazine, The Crisis, for 24 years, pioneer of Pan-Africanist Movement, inveterate campaigner for world peace after World War Two, joining the Communist Party in the last years of his life, and emigrating to the newly independent West African country of Ghana. To reduce him to being a sociologist, is to belittle his extraordinary accomplishments. Still, this is a course in social theory. We shall compare him with the theorists we studied in 101 and 102, especially Marx, Gramsci, Fanon, Durkheim, and Weber. In studying feminism, we noted that the contribution was not simply the addition of gender, but the repudiation of the conventional way of seeing theory – as an account of the world from the outside. -

Du Bois prophesied that the “problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the colour line.” A hundred years later, ecological crises join racial crises as perhaps the emergent problems of the twenty-first century. In Du Boisian spirit, my project explores how the color line and what I call the ecological line— the line that runs between humans and their environment—intersect. “Race and Nature in American Literature, 1895-1941” reimagines many literary genres and critical disputes traditionally focalized through problematics of race and politics: the Washington—Du Bois debates on racial uplift, New Negro cultural nationalism, the Great Migration narrative, black Marxism, and ethnic proletarian literature. Employing methods of environmental historicism, archival research, and intersectional analysis, my project argues not only that intertwining racial and ecological problems erupted along the color line, but also that these problems form a constitutive element of our thinking about Race and politics in twentieth-century American literature. -
