Dear Seawolves and Seawolf Families, Welcome to Stony Brook University! You are now part of a vibrant and diverse campus community with many opportunities to get involved and resources available to help our students successfully transition to this new chapter in their life. If you are joining us as a first year student, the Undergraduate Colleges (UGCs) will play an important role in your new student experience. They are small communities that group students with common interests, help ease the transition to college, and create a sense of belonging by providing customized advising and support. If you are joining us as a new transfer student, we have an array of services available to support your transition and success at Stony Brook, including general and major academic advising, tutoring, and a specialized transfer course called ADV 101. In support of all students, we offer many opportunities to engage in campus life, build friendships with fellow Seawolves, and strengthen leadership skills. We strongly encourage students to get involved during their first semester in one or more of our 350 student clubs and organizations, cultural groups, and intramural sports teams. Students should download the CORQ app and check stonybrook.edu/sbengaged for real time information about campus programs and events. We also provide comprehensive resources to enhance students’ academic, career, and personal growth and development. Please visit stonybrook.edu/studentaffairs and stonybrook.edu/studentsuccess to learn more about all the resources available, both as new students and family members. All of our academic and student services departments are here to help our students be successful. Reach out to us when you have a question or concern. We’re here for you! Congratulations on reaching this exciting milestone. I look forward to seeing you in the fall. Go Seawolves!

Sincerely,

Rick Gatteau, PhD Vice President for Student Affairs

Campus Landmark: Boulders are scattered about the Stony Brook campus, several hundred being 20,000 year-old leftovers from the Ice Age glaciers that once blanketed Long Island. During the extensive excavations that accompanied the initial construction of buildings and roadways on campus, these boulders were unearthed and incorporated into the landscape. Today, many of these ancient rocks serve as brightly painted totems for fraternities, sororities, and other campus organizations.

Campus Landmark: The Zebra Path is a striped geometric walkway connecting the Academic Mall with northern sections of campus beyond John S. Toll Drive. The eye-catching path lies in front of the Career Center and behind the Melville Library. In March 1981, as part of an advanced seminar in public art, Stony Brook student Kim Hardiman won a grant to beautify the campus. Her 232’ x 12’ handpainted walkway, regularly refurbished with new coats of paint, constitutes one student’s lasting tribute to the Stony Brook campus.
