For the first 2 years after launch, the service was branded Sky HD. The service requires the user to have a Sky HD Digibox and HD ready-made TV. A subscription to the original HD package carries an additional fee of 10.25 pounds (17.00 euros in Ireland) per month in addition to the standard Sky subscription, allowing customers to view HD channels corresponding to the packages of channels to which they are subscribed. Additional Pay-Per-View events on Sky Box Office HD are not available to customers unless they subscribe to the Sky HD package. As of June 2014, the number of sky-HD subscriptions was more than 5.2 million, which is 4.8 million more than a year earlier. Since October 2016, Sky HD is no longer offered since it was replaced by Sky s. Existing customers can continue their subscription with Sky HD. The story launched in May 2006, Sky HD brought high definition television to the consumer market, originally consisting of nine HD channels. The launch prices have been announced as 299 pounds for HD set-top boxes, with an additional HD subscription for 10 pounds per month on top of any existing packages. Customers who pre-ordered the deposit before April 6, 2006, were the first to receive the service, with installations starting on May 21, 2006 after more than 40,000 pre-orders of service; the number of pre-orders on Sky-HD exceeded the total sales in the first year of sky. The HD package is launched with a year-long minimum subscription duration. The starting line-up consisted of Sky One HD, Sky Arts HD, Sky Movies 9 HD, Sky Movies 10 HD, Sky Sports HD, Discovery HD, National Geographic Channel HD, Sky Box Office HD 1 and Sky Box Office HD 2 (now Sky Movies Box Office). In January 2010, customers were offered a Sky HD box in the standard version, with the HD package optional at the same subscription price. The Sky box was subsequently recalled, which means that Sky HD has become part of the standard installation. As of the end of 2013, the HD package costing 10.25 euros per month has ceased to be offered to new customers, instead inviting customers to subscribe to the Family package, and then receive a premium of 5 euros for the cost of the usual Variety package. Access to HD versions of Sky Sports and Sky Movies requires a separate subscription to the HD package at a cost of 5.25 euros per month. Sky's recording tools are included in the standard Sky TV subscription package, but will charge you a fee of 10.25 euros per month if the customer does not subscribe to any Sky TV package. Viewers who don't subscribe to a Sky TV package or Sky will still receive all free SD and HD HD but can't use the means to record. Uptakers subscriptions free of Freesat from Sky service are provided with a recorder less field-branded SkyHD rather than Sky HD, given the SkyHD boxes provided by Freesat from Sky do not contain recording equipment. According to the Version as of November 2016, Sky has offered more than 50 HD channels, more than any competitor. Numerous FTA HD channels are available that do not require a subscription, only HD is capable of digibox such as Sky HD box, including BBC One HD, BBC Two HD and Channel 4 HD. On demand Home article: On Demand (Sky) March 27, 2007, Sky launched its Sky Anytime on a TV Push-video-on-demand service for Sky HD owners to install top boxes. High-definition and standard-definition programs are logged overnight into reserved 140GB of storage space to give the effect of video on demand. It was also used to attract high-definition viewers from channels that were not broadcast in HD at the time. These include Sky News (Technofile, Diana: The Last Word), Disney Channel (High School Musical 2) and Nickelodeon (iCarly). Install the top boxes of the Original Sky HD Digibox (V.1) backpanel First Generation Sky HD Digibox were produced by Thomson, with Sky subsequently adding Samsung, Pace and Amstrad as manufacturers afterwards. In 2009, a production malfunction resulted in a batch of up to 90,000 units manufactured by Pace requiring replacement; Sky offered customers a 3 month free HD subscription package for inconvenience. To connect to HD ready-made TVs, the box is displayed through the HDMI connector (available adapters to the digital visual interface). The box meets the requirements of high- bandwidth digital content protection (HDCP). Sky boxes, manufactured before January 2008, also had analog component connections (YPbPr), but since HDCP copy protection cannot be applied to this type of output, it is no longer enabled. Traditional Standard Definition (SD) connections are available through SCART and S-Video. All programs are now exiting HDMI and SD connections, although individual broadcasters have the ability to require HDCP (and therefore HDMI) in the future. All HD channels are broadcast in 1080i format (although the box can be installed to scale this up to 720p, if the user wants) using the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC compression standard, astra 2A, Astra 2E, Astra 2F and Eutelsat 28A satellites at 28.2 and 28.5 degrees Celsius in the new DVB transmission standard, DVB-S2. BBC HD was originally broadcast using DVB-S, but switched to DVB-S2 on 6 June 2011. Version 5 epg (e-program manual) is almost identical to the version found on Sky, except that by clicking THE TV Guide and then number 2 on the remote control, the lists are displayed only for HD channels. Update sent to HD boxes early on March 20, 2007, which also included code for Sky Anytime (now OnDemand). Version 8 Guide to the Sky, Sky, The Sky HD guide included in the mini-TV, improved search features and an updated interface. On October 1, 2010, Sky HD DRX895W Set Top Box with remote and power cable began the process of downloading open source software to Sky HD receivers. Unlike most software updates made by Sky, open source licenses require Sky to notify customers that the download has taken place. Subscribers are notified by a on-screen message that sends them to a special section of Sky's website. The website also includes downloading open source components, including building environments. Sky says it has found a number of open source software developers that provide features that benefit the software used in the Sky HD box. The release story below is a list of boxes that were made for use with Sky HD.
