More and more, people from all over the world are keen on growing fascination with e-sport. In practice, e-sport is a type of sport in which players compete using computer games. The competitions in games, like FIFA, Dota2, the League of Legends, and Counter-Strike, are prestigious tournaments with a global reach and a budget of millions of dollars. On the other hand, reliable player ranking is a critical issue in both classic and e-sport. For example, the “Golden Ball” is the most valuable prize for an individual football player in the whole football history. Moreover, the entire players’ world wants to know who the best player is. The position of each player in the ranking depends on the assessment of his skills and predispositions. -

Karahalios ABSTRACT Electronic sports (eSports) viewership numbers have been growing over the years. Video games such as League of Legends, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, or Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft have a large following. During the League of Legends regular season matches, 250,000 people regularly tune in to watch the games. Professional players such as Enrique “Xpeke” Cedeno-Martinez have 470,000 Twitter followers. In this study, we built two visualizations to explore similarities and differences between eSports and traditional sports. We focused on the salaries earned by eSports players and the emergence of a new way of interacting with professional players via live streaming. Any opinions or claims contained in this Working Paper do not necessarily reflect the views of HSE SERIES: ECONOMICS Dmitry Dagaev 1 and Egor Stoyan2 PARIMUTUEL BETTING ON THE ESPORTS DUELS: REVERSE FAVOURITE-LONGSHOT BIAS AND ITS DETERMINANTS We analyse betting behaviour patterns of the visitors of the specialized betting web- site dedicated to the popular eSports game Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The reverse favourite-longshot bias is found both in the in-sample and out-of-sample datasets. This phe- nomenon is rather unusual for parimutuel betting markets because favourite-longshot bias is more common. We define simple betting strategies based on the bets on underdogs and show that these strategies make a sufficiently large positive profit, which is a sign of market inefficiency. Next, we investigate determinants of the reverse favourite-longshot bias. We hypothesize that popular teams attract more unsophisticated gamblers which adds to the stronger reverse favourite-longshot bias in matches with such teams. Geographical proximity is found to be a significant factor that increases the bias, whereas the effect of internet pop- ularity measured by the number of team players' followers on Twitter surprisingly follows the U-shape curve.
