Western Suburbs Junior Cricket Club Inc. Season 2013 / 2014 Presentation Booklet 2013/2014 President’s Report Well it’s been another great year at the club and doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun. I would like to thank and congratulate all involved in making the year such a success. Committee members, Coaches, Players and all parents who contributed in one way or another. As a club we outlined some goals and objectives last year and given our results and the amount of enjoyment that all involved had it is safe to say we achieved a large amount of what we set out to do. 2013/2014 Main Objectives Improve training support for players and coaches Improve facilities and upgrade training equipment Attract and retain players through advertising and marketing Commence work with senior club to rebuild a pathway for juniors to play senior cricket. 2014/2015 Main Objectives Continue to build support and development for coaches to ensure quality training is available for all players. Finalise all building project with the completion of the cricket nets and attempt to reintroduce the Kentish oval No2 wicket. Work with and involve the senior club with our training to provide a mutually beneficial program for all junior players and create an environment that would see our players involved in West’s grade cricket for years to come. Rob Jones President 2013/2014 Secretary’s Report This season has probably been one of our most successful on the field in many years. Our player numbers are up significantly (reversing the trend amongst many other clubs). Highlights were: 7 of our 9 competition teams made Semi Finals 5 of those teams made the Grand Final 3 of those teams went on to win their Grand Final o Under 11 White – Division 3 o Under 14 White – Division 1 o Under 15 Red – Division 2 12 Players played representative cricket Off the field we once again supported the McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps Day, raising $1,209.70 raised for The McGrath Foundation. Thank you to Mums and Dads who provided various goodies on the day. Our Milo Cricket programme continues to be very popular for the youngsters and is a great way to introduce kids to the game. We had 54 registered players (ages 5 to 9) . Thanks to all the all the volunteer coaches & helpers, especially Ben and Shelly Woolmer for co- ordinating the program. None of our success would have been possible without our small, but hard working committee. If you’ve been in the club for a while, perhaps it’s your turn to get involved and help us continue the great success we’ve been having in the past few years . Our AGM will be held in July. This is a good chance for parents to come along and get involved. Many roles only require a small commitment of time, an hour or two a week, much of which can be done from home. The roles range from administrative (like organising meetings and minute taking), to hands on coaching roles. So please come along to the AGM and support your club. No matter what your skills are we will have a role for you. I would be more than happy to discuss with you areas where you may be able to assist however great or small. Rob Redpath Secretary 2013/2014 Treasurer’s Report This season has been another successful one on the financial front. We have managed to maintain the strong position we attained over the last couple of years whilst still embarking on a programme of equipment upgrades and investment in training. We were able to secure a further grant from the state government of $7,500. These funds will be used to: 1. Install external power outlets at the Ford oval training nets (this will be used to run the bowling machine) . 2. Improve drainage around the nets. Responsible management of our finances has enabled us to keep registration fees on hold despite increase costs from the Newcastle Junior Cricket Association and from Newcastle Council. We will enter the 2014/2015 season in a very good position financially which will enable us to continue invest in training and equipment for the future. Gregory Rose Treasurer Under 9 Red After our first training session it was safe to say we had some work to do. I must admit it was quite entertaining watching the boys battle their new pads, helmets, gloves etc whilst trying to bat/run for the first time. In some cases this was the first time a few of the boys had actually held a bat in their hand. From previous experience we always knew that bowling was going to be a bit of a battle, which it was. I must say though that the boys showed an enormous amount of enthusiasm for the sport and were all eager to learn. As our training sessions went on, the boys showed massive signs of improvement and were all very excited to play their first game. I think it was safe to say that cricket was the winner after our first game and although we lost, they all had a blast. The introduction of hitting off the tee for no balls was a huge success. As the season progressed the boys skills all improved, with many mastering their bowling and batting. By mid season the boys had notched up few wins and you could see that they all had grown in confidence and ability. By season’s end the boys had improved out of sight and were playing really good cricket. It was an absolute honour to coach the team and I must extend a very big thank you to all the parents for sharing in all other duties involved in both training and game day. Ashley Mowbray (Coach) Under 9 Green U9 Green's season started with a couple of training sessions focused on running between wickets amongst the standard batting and bowling focal points. This gave the boys a great sense of what happens 'out in the middle', and was shortly followed by 'backing up' in both fielding and as the non- striking batter. Ultimately the 'hit and run' rules at training led to a few more run-outs on game day, but it was a much quicker way of gaining feedback through experience. This was adjusted and through the rest of the season and we saw some quite devastating running between wickets by the end of the season - much to the horror of some opposing teams. The bowling improved throughout the season, proven by the fact that there was nearly a team 'movement' to bowling spin by March - tentatively quashed by the grumpy coach. Just prior to this revolution there'd been near hat-tricks and other great bowling figures. We'll work on the spin next year...maybe.... Batting improved with an acceptance that hitting 'over the top' whilst generally successful for Aus T20 and the occasional U9 Greens partnership, wasn't always a safe bet to maximise runs. Especially when the total score is divided by the number of wickets. There was one 'nearly six' about a foot short... :( There was only one attempted ramp shot that was recorded, with predictable though not fatal results. There was a higher number of occasions when overt preening to appear like an Australian cricket players was apparent, and even more times when butterflies or team-mate's jokes were afforded priority to the delivered ball. It is suspected this inattention is attributable to the degree to which the manager/trainer Gavin Jenkins warmed the boys up - it was pretty intense on the sidelines. The team would like to thank him for his efforts at training and on game day. The coach appreciated his ability to stop any 'chasies' by the time it got to the road, as well as winning any game he took responsibility for! Under 10 Red Wests Red has had a successful season of cricket with all children displaying good sportsmanship, encouragement of team mates and improvement of cricket skills. We welcomed to the team four new players- Cade, Declan, Jackson and Liam. These children along with Athila, Edward, Eve, Jett , Joseph, Oliver, Sonny and Sudan have been a pleasure to coach throughout the 2013/2014 season. The team played average cricket up until Christmas and then out is out after the break. A major highlight for the team this year came at the Pink Stumps Day. All families contributed to the day and got into the spirit of raising much needed funds for breast cancer. There are some amazing chefs in our team. Thank you to the children for a great year and to our parents for the support they give us at training and on game days. We hope to see you all next season. Dennis Nolan and Neil Thomson (Coaches) Gillian Leacey (Manager) Under 10 Green The mighty Wests Under 10 Green (aka: “The Junior Googs”) made their competitive cricketing debut in the 2013-2014 season. Some of the boys had previously been involved in Milo cricket run by Wests, but this was our first year “out in the middle”. The year proved to be a challenging, but enjoyable one, with all of the players developing their skills and their enjoyment of the game. Unfortunately, we had a few washouts before the Christmas break (which stopped our momentum towards recording a win) and the move to “if you’re out, you’re out” after Christmas certainly posed more learning opportunities . On the whole, it was a year of developing an understanding of the game for the boys, and they appeared to have fun doing it.
