2013/2014 President’s Report

Well it’s been another great year at the club and doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun.

I would like to thank and congratulate all involved in making the year such a success.

Committee members, Coaches, Players and all parents who contributed in one way or another.

As a club we outlined some goals and objectives last year and given our results and the amount of enjoyment that all involved had it is safe to say we achieved a large amount of what we set out to do.

2013/2014 Main Objectives

 Improve training support for players and coaches  Improve facilities and upgrade training equipment  Attract and retain players through advertising and marketing  Commence work with senior club to rebuild a pathway for juniors to play senior cricket. 

2014/2015 Main Objectives

 Continue to build support and development for coaches to ensure quality training is available for all players.  Finalise all building project with the completion of the cricket nets and attempt to reintroduce the Kentish oval No2 .  Work with and involve the senior club with our training to provide a mutually beneficial program for all junior players and create an environment that would see our players involved in West’s grade cricket for years to come.

2013/2014 Secretary’s Report

This season has probably been one of our most successful on the field in many years. Our player numbers are up significantly (reversing the trend amongst many other clubs). Highlights were:

 7 of our 9 competition teams made Semi Finals  5 of those teams made the Grand Final  3 of those teams went on to win their Grand Final o Under 11 White – Division 3 o Under 14 White – Division 1 o Under 15 Red – Division 2  12 Players played representative cricket

Off the field we once again supported the McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps Day, raising

$1,209.70 raised for The McGrath Foundation. Thank you to Mums and Dads who provided various goodies on the day.

Our Milo Cricket programme continues to be very popular for the youngsters and is a great way to introduce kids to the game. We had 54 registered players (ages 5 to 9) . Thanks to all the all the volunteer coaches & helpers, especially Ben and Shelly Woolmer for co- ordinating the program.

None of our success would have been possible without our small, but hard working committee. If you’ve been in the club for a while, perhaps it’s your turn to get involved and help us continue the great success we’ve been having in the past few years . Our AGM will be held in July. This is a good chance for parents to come along and get involved.

Many roles only require a small commitment of time, an hour or two a week, much of which can be done from home. The roles range from administrative (like organising meetings and minute taking), to hands on coaching roles. So please come along to the AGM and support your club. No matter what your skills are we will have a role for you. I would be more than happy to discuss with you areas where you may be able to assist however great or small.

2013/2014 Treasurer’s Report

This season has been another successful one on the financial front. We have managed to maintain the strong position we attained over the last couple of years whilst still embarking on a programme of equipment upgrades and investment in training.

We were able to secure a further grant from the state government of $7,500. These funds will be used to:

1. Install external power outlets at the Ford oval training nets (this will be used to run the bowling machine) . 2. Improve drainage around the nets.

Responsible management of our finances has enabled us to keep registration fees on hold despite increase costs from the Newcastle Junior Cricket Association and from Newcastle Council.

We will enter the 2014/2015 season in a very good position financially which will enable us to continue invest in training and equipment for the future.

Under 9 Red

After our first training session it was safe to say we had some work to do. I must admit it was quite entertaining watching the boys battle their new pads, helmets, gloves etc whilst trying to bat/run for the first time. In some cases this was the first time a few of the boys had actually held a bat in their hand.

From previous experience we always knew that bowling was going to be a bit of a battle, which it was. I must say though that the boys showed an enormous amount of enthusiasm for the sport and were all eager to learn.

As our training sessions went on, the boys showed massive signs of improvement and were all very excited to play their first game. I think it was safe to say that cricket was the winner after our first game and although we lost, they all had a blast. The introduction of hitting off the tee for no balls was a huge success.

As the season progressed the boys skills all improved, with many mastering their bowling and . By mid season the boys had notched up few wins and you could see that they all had grown in confidence and ability.

By season’s end the boys had improved out of sight and were playing really good cricket.

It was an absolute honour to coach the team and I must extend a very big thank you to all the parents for sharing in all other duties involved in both training and game day.

Ashley Mowbray (Coach)

Under 9 Green

U9 Green's season started with a couple of training sessions focused on running between amongst the standard batting and bowling focal points. This gave the boys a great sense of what happens 'out in the middle', and was shortly followed by 'backing up' in both fielding and as the non- striking batter. Ultimately the 'hit and run' rules at training led to a few more run-outs on game day, but it was a much quicker way of gaining feedback through experience. This was adjusted and through the rest of the season and we saw some quite devastating running between wickets by the end of the season - much to the horror of some opposing teams.

The bowling improved throughout the season, proven by the fact that there was nearly a team 'movement' to bowling spin by March - tentatively quashed by the grumpy coach. Just prior to this revolution there'd been near hat-tricks and other great bowling figures. We'll work on the spin next year...maybe....

Batting improved with an acceptance that hitting 'over the top' whilst generally successful for Aus T20 and the occasional U9 Greens partnership, wasn't always a safe bet to maximise runs. Especially when the total score is divided by the number of wickets. There was one 'nearly six' about a foot short... :(

There was only one attempted ramp shot that was recorded, with predictable though not fatal results. There was a higher number of occasions when overt preening to appear like an Australian cricket players was apparent, and even more times when butterflies or team-mate's jokes were afforded priority to the delivered ball.

It is suspected this inattention is attributable to the degree to which the manager/trainer Gavin Jenkins warmed the boys up - it was pretty intense on the sidelines. The team would like to thank him for his efforts at training and on game day. The coach appreciated his ability to stop any 'chasies' by the time it got to the road, as well as winning any game he took responsibility for!

Under 10 Red

Wests Red has had a successful season of cricket with all children displaying good sportsmanship, encouragement of team mates and improvement of cricket skills.

We welcomed to the team four new players- Cade, Declan, Jackson and Liam. These children along with Athila, Edward, Eve, Jett , Joseph, Oliver, Sonny and Sudan have been a pleasure to coach throughout the 2013/2014 season. The team played average cricket up until Christmas and then out is out after the break.

A major highlight for the team this year came at the Pink Stumps Day. All families contributed to the day and got into the spirit of raising much needed funds for breast cancer. There are some amazing chefs in our team.

Thank you to the children for a great year and to our parents for the support they give us at training and on game days. We hope to see you all next season.

Dennis Nolan and Neil Thomson (Coaches)

Gillian Leacey (Manager)

Under 10 Green

The mighty Wests Under 10 Green (aka: “The Junior Googs”) made their competitive cricketing debut in the 2013-2014 season. Some of the boys had previously been involved in Milo cricket run by Wests, but this was our first year “out in the middle”.

The year proved to be a challenging, but enjoyable one, with all of the players developing their skills and their enjoyment of the game. Unfortunately, we had a few washouts before the Christmas break (which stopped our momentum towards recording a win) and the move to “if you’re out, you’re out” after Christmas certainly posed more learning opportunities .

On the whole, it was a year of developing an understanding of the game for the boys, and they appeared to have fun doing it.

Our team compromised (in alphabetic order):

 Seniru “The Cannon” Basnayake - Devastating fast bowler and can throw!  “Prince” William Bryant - Opening bowler of the future and technically correct batsman!  Tyler “T-Bone” Bunt - The new Max Walker who will continue to baffle the batters  “Slippery” Sam Hill - Kept track of the time and counted all deliveries, a good talker in the field!  Scott “Hector” Helmers - A natural who excelled with both bat AND ball!  Luke “Special K” Kempnich - Really developed his batting and bowled well!  Aidan “Knipey” Knipe – No-one tried harder, and has the skills to go with it!  Declan “Fearless” O’Brien – Fantastic commitment and great keeper!  Austin “People’s Policeman” Wicks – Great club man and took plenty of wickets!  Ollie “Drac” Wicks – When he got aggressive, the results started to come!  Tom “Commando” Williams – Fast bowler of the future. Watch out!  Alex “The Axe” Wood – Threw himself around in the field, and really batted well!

Also, the team would not have functioned this year without the dedication, help and assistance from the following people;

Super Scorer: Gina Williams

Super-assistant Coach: Gary Bunt

Super-sub-assistant coaches: The Dads

Super manager: Tony Wood

AND, a special thanks to everyone at Wests for making us feel welcome.

Graham Hill (Coach)

Under 11 Red – Division 1

Max Allen, Tom Davies, Nat Davis, Harry Galvin, Oliver Gilson, Oliver Kelleher, Lochie Martin, Jack Morrow, Liam Ptolemy, Lewis Rodd, Ben Standing and Dom Stanley formed the Under 11 Reds in season 2013/14. These were a bunch of keen and enthusiastic boys who enjoyed their cricket, no matter the result.

The Team had a very mixed season in 2013/14. Several players hadn’t played before and we came across opposition that were ‘graded’ or had played U/11 last year. This meant that we faced teams of a high standard and players with representative experience. We often lost clumps of wickets in matches and this made it difficult to post competitive scores or chase big totals. We were more than competitive against clubs that did not grade their teams and had several close and exciting games against the Tigers.

We scored 1,239 runs, losing 89 wickets and took 53 wickets conceding 1,544 runs.

Our leading run scorer was Ben with 208 @ 34.67. He posted our highest individual score of 47no. The other notable innings were from Lochie with scores of 43 and 40. Ben and Lochie shared the second highest partnership for the club during the season of 131 against Colts. A fantastic effort.

Our leading wicket taker was Ben with 13 wickets @ 5.15. Other notable contributions were Lochie (3/15), Tom (2/9), Oliver G (2/11) and Jack (2/16).

I could give awards to every player as they improved their skills over the course of the season. The Coaches award is presented to Tom who was new to the team this year. He started the season slowly with the bat, but patience and perseverance saw him post good scores after Christmas. Tom was probably our quickest bowler and was unlucky not to take more wickets.

The fielding award goes to Dom Stanley. Dom always had a smile on his face, tried his hardest with bat and ball and was always reliable in the field. He did an excellent job when it was his turn to keep wicket and always encouraged his team mates.

Thanks to those parents who assisted with scoring, training, warm ups etc. during the season. Thank you to Helen for the photos of the team, they are fantastic. Finally, thank you to all the parents, brothers, sisters and family members who came to games and supported and encouraged the boys to do their best.

Andrew Standing (Coach)

Under 11 White – Division 3 Minor & Major Premiers

We had a great season of cricket. I am sure all the boys felt the same.

We had Sam, Mevan, Hamish, David, Fynn, Braith and Harry continuing from last year. Newcomers were Joshua, Nick , Ben, Finn and Mihir. All fitted into this fantastic team with so much enthusiasm. I guess that was our success this year. Everybody contributed from whatever they could. If we were not batting well, we bowled and fielded extremely well. The boys were always in the game and had that hunger to win.

Unfortunately Mihir had to move to Brisbane half way through the season. There were days we only had 8 players and that was tough but we continued playing as a team and won even with 8 players. We only lost 3 matches during the whole season. We were the minor premiers and went in to semi- finals with so much excitement. The boys were a great unit by that time, everybody wanted to win semi-final and get into final. We played against Toronto and the boys were so keen to get their best batsmen out and they did so.

We proudly marched into our finals against the Newcastle city pink (the girl’s team). By this time the girls have become very fast and furious bowling and fielding unit. I knew our boys felt a little nervous, could see that from the parents too.

But a little motivation and confidence boost, we became the champions. I felt so proud of all the boys as they all contributed the best possible way for the team. The team spirit and harmony was great.

Thanking all for the boys and the parents for a fantastic season. I am very proud to be your coach.

Under 11 Green – Division 2

The team: Levi Carmody; Tomas Conaghan; William Gallagher; William Montgomery; Brock McLean; Alec Mowbray; Noah Parker; Ayomal Perera; Daniel Redpath; Jeremy Stewart; Austin Zander.

This year the U/11 Green’s welcomed some new faces to add to the core group of players who have been together since U/9’s. Jeremy Stewart joined us for his first season of cricket whilst Brock McLean and Jack came mid-season. This worked out very well for us as Austin Zander suffered a season ending injury after round 3 breaking his hand scoring a try in a rugby league game at school.

Overall, the boys had a good season. Once again, the emphasis was on participation, improving skill levels, enjoying the game and playing it in the right spirit. From my point of view, the boys achieved all these objectives across the season.

Whilst we missed out on the semi-finals, we had some good results and showed that on our day we could compete well with the best teams in our division. Our improved bowling accuracy ranked us 3rd in runs against whilst the valuing of their wicket by a number of our batsmen meant we also ranked 3rd for wickets lost. As they say, “the stats don’t lie” and our 6th placed ranking for runs for and wickets lost point to where we need to improve.

From a batting perspective, all the boys showed improvement however more technique work is required for most. Daniel Redpath had another outstanding season with the bat scoring 184 runs @36.80. He top scored with 53 n.o. and hit 23 fours across the season. A deserving winner of the batting award. Congratulations to Daniel and Will Montgomery, who also had a good season with the bat, on their partnership of 126 against Cardiff. Will Gallagher, Alec Mowbray and Noah Parker deserve mention for their batting. Brock showed great promise and Jeremy Stewart showed tremendous courage at the crease in his first season.

Tomas Conaghan continued his rapid bowling improvement from last season taking out this award with 7 wickets @ 8.43 with a best of 3/1. Whether bowling pace or , Tomas always troubled the batter. Daniel Redpath, William Gallagher, Brock McLean and William Montgomery also performed well with the ball. Alec Mowbray, Levi Carmody, Ayomal Perera, Daniel Whelan and Noah Parker all showed improvement. Jack showed promise in the few games he played.

All the boys showed improvement in the field. William Gallagher is a deserved winner of this award taking 4 catches and demonstrating outstanding outfielding. Alec Mowbray and Levi Carmody were both ready volunteers to wicket keep and did a great job.

The coaches award this year goes to Alec Mowbray. This was again a very difficult award to give as many of the boys were in contention because of their enthusiasm, positive attitude, teamwork and respect for the coach.

I would like to thank all the boys for their participation and effort again this season. It has been a pleasure to coach you and see your development as cricketer’s and young men. I would also like to thank my wife, Marion, for her significant assistance in managing the team and scoring. Thanks also to all the parents who have helped out in various ways during the season, particularly those dads who gave their time to assist at practice.

Rob Redpath (Coach)

Under 12 Red – Division 1 Grand Finalists

What a great year for U12’s Reds Division 1, finishing Grand Finalists after a solid year of consistent performance. The boys finished 3rd, and went on to beat 2nd place Warners Bay Cardiff in the Semi Final. The Grand Final saw them up against 1st place Newcastle City, who had not lost a game all season. The boys dug deep in the field, with some tight bowling and well executed run-outs to give themselves a strong chance to chase a modest total by Newcastle City. The boys unfortunately faced some tough bowling and fell short of the target, but showed fighting spirit right to the end.

I’m proud of the boys for showing great team spirit towards each other and their opposition. It was a team effort that saw them make it to the grand final, with encouragement and enthusiasm at training and during the game. There was a massive improvement in each player’s game in all areas of batting, bowling and fielding.

All boys deserve a special mention; Lachlan and Byron showed us their power hitting with some big boundaries in crucial games. Jeremy, John and Jacob displayed their all-round talent with consistent performance with both bat and ball. Joshua was handy with the bat whilst displaying a tidy performance behind the stumps as wicketkeeper. Thomas and Ben played some great cameos with the bat, whilst also chipping in to take wickets. Jake and Jonah stepped up to the mark with some much improved bowling to take some crucial wickets throughout the season, and Bryn & Sharvil both playing their finest innings to hit their personal best scores with the bat.

From a team perspective the boys were very tight in the field with a number of catches and runouts, showing that the practise sessions in the field pay off.

Thanks must also go to the parents who helped throughout the year; Amanda for putting her hand up and taking on the Team Manager’s role; Ian for providing the additional coaching at training and official games; Nick for assisting at training and scoring; Jeremy for assisting on game day; Mark and Geoff for scoring; and Mandy for entering the scores into the computer on a weekly basis and assisting the Coach. Thank you also goes out to all parents of the players who were very supportive throughout the year and always encouraged the boys.

I would like to thank all the boys for playing the game in great spirit as well as encouraging each other regardless of each player’s ability. Keep practising and we look forward to seeing you all play again next year.

Ian Harborne (Coach)

Under 12 Green – Division 2 Semi Finalists

Well what a great season by a great bunch of kids.

After a slow start the boys found there feet in round 3 with their first win. In a season that consisted of many very close losses and some very solid victories the boys were always respectful toward their opposition.

While there were many outstanding individual performances during the season they never lost sight of the fact there are 11 men on a cricket team and the small things all contribute to a win or loss.

I think all the boys improved as cricketers over the year, with everybody taking a wicket and all scoring runs.

With some of the boys having their first season and others there 2nd or 3rd to fall 3 runs short of a grand final in a new team is an outstanding effort, be proud of yourselves boys. Hope to see you all next season.

Your proud coach

Scott Lennox

Under 14 Red – Premier Division Semi Finalists

Our season was an OK one making the Semi-Final – but unfortunately we were beaten by Charlestown on the day – it’s a game we should have won to go into another GF. But the boys will learn and be a stronger team next time they are in a similar situation.

We welcomed a few new boys into the club / team this year and all fitted in extremely well and enjoyed their season.

Once again it was pleasing to see the boys improve and learn more about the game of cricket and understand how complicated, frustrating but very rewarding and enjoyable the game can be. Their commitment and willingness to listen and learn makes my role as coach a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. Well done boys!

A great big thanks to all our wonderful parents and grandparents who come along to watch the boys, and help out with scoring and cheering.

Cricket Quotes

Any active sportsman has to be very focused; you've got to be in the right frame of mind. If your energy is diverted in various directions, you do not achieve the results. I need to know when to switch on and switch off: and the rest of the things happen around that. Cricket is in the foreground, the rest is in the background. Sachin Tendulkar

I probably say this every year, but this was probably our best year ever!

The most pleasing aspect for me this year, was the level of consistency and maturity that the team has developed. Whilst we had some stand-out performers, I think the thing that carried us through to success was the fact that we had no weak areas. This was clearly evident the final series where every player contributed to our success.

Our Grand Final performance was a good demonstration of this. Against the Minor Premiers who finished well in front of us on the table, we played what must be close to the perfect game. Our early batsman set a great platform which allowed our heavy hitters to do their job at the end of the innings and set a good target.

When it came time to bowl and field we were completely switched on and didn’t give the opposition the slightest chance of reaching our total through accurate bowling and great ground fielding. We used 11 bowlers in the Grand Final and every one of them walked off with good figures.

I’d like to thank the parents who assisted throughout the year, especially Toll who was basically the Co-Coach, Steve Steele, Greg Mazalo, Rob Jones and Simone Nolan our Manager.

I won’t name individual player performances this year for two reasons; firstly because there are simply too many but more importantly because I think it was the quality of the team unit that took us to success.

I’m very proud of every young man in our team and I’ve enjoyed being your coach for the last 6 years. I hope you all come back next year and continue to develop your skills and most importantly, enjoy playing cricket with your mates.

What a great year for the “15’s Boys”

The majority of the team came back from last year with the addition of players, Tane Charman, Logan Olive, Charlton Lee, Nick Crameri & Sebastian Leacey all handling themselves nicely with the step up to 15s

Last year the team ended up on the bottom of the ladder, so the boys entered the year with a nothing to lose attitude, while having fun and maybe winning more games than we lost would have been considered a success.

All the boys throughout the year showed increased cricket skills with all players contributing with both bat and ball with many achieving personal best results along the way.

Perry Carpenter and Will Dundas both shared the captaincy role this year with both stepping up and leading by example. Perry scoring 479 runs in the season with two century’s, and Will Dundas taking 19 wickets and a new vigour for batting, in addition with Josh Taylor who continued his self- appointed tag as team all-rounder gave a solid basis for this year’s team.

From the Big Hitting Trio Damon White, Will Thompson & Tristan Chesher, to the consistant bowling of Sam Roy, Logan Olive & Tane Charman coupled with the improved Nick Cremeri, Pat Vanderzwan and Charlton Lee who left his best bowling for the final, all the players came together as a team when it counted at the end of the season with players contributing to achieve to the Grand Final success.

Thank you to all the parents who helped throughout the year with scoring and setting up, it is truly appreciated.

I hope you all enjoyed the year and memories as much as I did.

Under 16 Red - Division 2 Grand Finalists

Season 2013/2014 provided the Under 16 Division 2 Western Suburbs a core group of players who formed the basis of the team from the previous season

Our Captain again in her last year was Savannah Stankovic and again lead this team with grit and direction whilst moulding a range of personalities into a cohesive unit capable of producing successful team performances, ably assisted by our Vice Captain Nick Standing .The achievements of this side are enhanced by the fact several players continued playing above their age group.

This season we practiced chiefly at Ford Oval nets and grounds with the assistance of a number of parents and the use of the new club bowling machine. Practice was every Monday and Friday including some Public Holidays and I thank all the players and parents for their commitment to practice sessions.

To make the Grand Final for the second year in a row was a great achievement and to accomplish the close result against a very strong Belmont side in the Grand Final is testimony to a wonderful culmination of achievement, a never say die attitude and a reward for all the training and hard work by all the players and the support provided by all the parents.

All players throughout the season were praiseworthy ambassadors for the club and played the game in the spirit of good sportsmanship worthy of Grand Finalists. It has been my pleasure to coach this side for the last three seasons and I take the opportunity to congratulate all players on their admirable efforts, dedication and enthusiasm this season and wish all players the very best in the sporting and working endeavours.

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much” Helen Keller

Special thanks should go to the following:

Trevor for his training knowledge, guidance to all players, technical assistance and coaching.

Mark Nolan for his assistance with training and support management. Bruce Hodge for his logistical assistance and always possessing a complete confidence in the destiny of the team. Mrs Karen Stankovic for scoring every single game. Thank you so very much. Warren Sterling for all his management assistance to this team in previous years and bringing to the game a light hearted approach when times were tough. David Turner for all his support over so many years.

This is our team.
