For centuries, the Spanish and Spanish-speaking mestizo (mixed blood) elite oppressed the Mixtec People and their linguistic and cultural practices. These oppressive practices were experienced in Mixtec communities and surrounding urban areas, as well as in domestic and international migrant destinations. In the 1980s, a significant transition occurred in Mexico from indigenismo to a neoliberal multicultural framework. In this transition, discriminatory practices have become increasingly “symbolic,” referring to their assertion in everyday social practices rather than through overt force, obscuring both the perpetrator and the illegitimacy of resulting social hierarchies (Bourdieu, 1991). -

This is an inventory of the vascular alien flora of Catalonia (northeastern Iberian Peninsula, Spain) updated to 2018, representing 1068 alien taxa in total. 554 (52.0%) out of them are casual and 514 (48.0%) are established. 87 taxa (8.1% of the total number and 16.8 % of those established) show an invasive behaviour. The geographic zone with more alien plants is the most anthropogenic maritime area. However, the differences among regions decrease when the degree of naturalization of taxa increases and the number of invaders is very similar in all sectors. Only 26.2% of the taxa are more or less abundant, while the rest are rare or they have vanished. The alien flora is represented by 115 families, 87 out of them include naturalised species. The most diverse genera are Opuntia (20 taxa), Amaranthus (18 taxa) and Solanum (15 taxa). Most of the alien plants have been introduced since the beginning of the twentieth century (70.7%), with a strong increase since 1970 (50.3% of the total number). Almost two thirds of alien taxa have their origin in Euro-Mediterranean area and America, while 24.6% come from other geographical areas. The taxa originated in cultivation represent 9.5%, whereas spontaneous hybrids only 1.2%. From the temporal point of view, the rate of Euro-Mediterranean taxa shows a progressive reduction parallel to an increase of those of other origins, which have reached 73.2% of introductions during the last 50 years. -

Se muestra la distribución de las familias Agavaceae y Nolinaceae en América y México. Para México se determinó la presencia de 402 taxa, 342 de ellos pertenecen a los géneros Agave, Beschorneria, Furcraea, Hesperaloii, Manfreda, Polianthes, Prochnyanthes y Yucca de la familia Agavaceae, en tanto que 60 corresponden a los géneros Beaucarnea, Calibanus, Dasylirion y Nolina de la familia Nolinaceae. Se presenta también la lista actualizada de las especies de ambas familias, ordenadas alfabéticamente. Para cada taxon se señala su distribución por estado y por provincia florística. Los estados más ricos son: Oaxaca con 63 taxa, Durango con 52, Puebla con 50, San Luis Potosí y Sonora con 47 y Chihuahua con 45. En cuanto a las provincias florísticas con un número mayor de taxa están: las Serranías Meridionales, Sierra Madre Occidental y Altiplanicie. Para México, hasta el momento, se han realizado cinco floras regionales y cuatro listados florísticos, en los que se aborda el estudio de las Agavaceae y Nolinaceae a diferentes niveles. Los géneros Agave, Beaucarnea, Beschorneria, Ma11freda y Prochnyanthes han sido objeto de tratamientos taxonómicos; otros como Dasylirion, Furcraea y Polianthes se encuentran en diferentes etapas de desarrollo, en tanto que Calibanus, Hesperaloii, Nolina, Yucca y varios grupos de Agave, requieren una revisión actualizada. -

A generic-level phylogeny for the tribe was recently produced, providing new insights into relationships between the taxa. Octopoma and Arenifera are woody shrubs with multilocular capsules and are distributed across the Succulent Karoo. Octopoma was shown to be polyphyletic in the tribal phylogeny, but comprehensive sampling is required to confirm its polyphyly. Arenifera has not previously been sampled and therefore its phylogenetic placement in the tribe is uncertain. In this study, phylogenetic sampling for nine plastid regions (atpB-rbcL, matK, psbJ-petA, rpl16, rps16, trnD-trnT, trnL-F, trnQUUG-rps16, trnS-trnG) was expanded to include all species of Octopoma and Arenifera, to assess phylogenetic placement and relationships of these genera. -
The National Cactus & Succulent Botanical Garden
Part B DISPLAY ROCKERIES 4. THE TOUR BEGINS! The National Cactus & Succulent Botanical Garden and Research Centre is located in SECTOR 5, PANCHKULA. This sector is being developed as the main City Centre of this modern township. The garden is at the northern end of the City Park, covering an extensive area of 7.4 acres. It is approachable by road, being about twenty minutes’ drive from the Chandigarh Bus Stand, and practically the same distance from the Chandigarh Airport. The entrance to the garden is situated on a service road, that runs parallel to the main road going from the Fountain Chowk near the HUDA building to the main Panchkula Bus Stand. Coming on the main road from the Fountain Chowk near HUDA building, this side road takes off from the first traffic light. To gain the maximum benefit from a visit to the garden, one should spend a few minutes to study the attached LAYOUT MAP of the area. While planning the garden, the topography of the land, which is undulating and gradually sloping towards the South, was taken into account. The map will show that it is a well-planned garden. 36 The Haryana Urban Development Authority architects have done a creditable job. There is an optimal utilization of the area. The concrete 37 pathways, well laid-out plant rockeries, spacious lawns, water features and waterways, and above all, the spacious Botanical Collection Glass Houses speak volumes of this effort. The RECEPTION CENTER (near the main gate) and OFFICE (towards the north and nearer to the service gate) provide the necessary back-up; the latter houses a small LIBRARY of succulent plant literature, and a small LABORATORY is also being developed there. -
