This project investigates the potential of self-directed, technologically mediated composition as a means of reconfiguring gender stereotypes within the operatic tradition. This practice confronts two primary stereotypes: the positioning of female performing bodies within narratives of violence and the absence of women from authorial roles that construct and regulate the operatic tradition. The Pomegranate Cycle redresses these stereotypes by presenting a new narrative trajectory of healing for its central character, and by placing the singer inside the role of composer and producer. During the twentieth and early twenty-first century, operatic and classical music institutions have resisted incorporating works of living composers into their repertory.

Samsara is Sanskriet voor ‘het eeuwig draaiende rad van het leven’ en is het vertrekpunt van de filmmakers. Gefilmd over een periode van bijna 5 jaar en in 25 landen toont Samsara ons heilige plaatsen, rampgebieden, industriële landschappen en natuurwonderen. Samsara is een film zonder dialoog en beschrijvende teksten en is daardoor niet een traditionele documentaire maar een werk dat de toeschouwer inspireert, geholpen door de sublieme beelden en zinnelijke muziek die het oude en het moderne vermengt. Arhai’s Balkan Folktronica: Serbian Ethno Music Reimagined for British Market* Ivana Medić1 Institute of Musicology SASA (Belgrade) Abstract This article focuses on Serbian composer Jovana Backović and her band/project Arhai, founded in Belgrade in 1998. The central argument is that Arhai made a transition from being regarded a part of the Serbian ethno music scene (which flourished during the 1990s and 2000s) to becoming a part of the global world music scene, after Jovana Backović moved from her native Serbia to the United Kingdom to pursue an international career. This move did not imply a fundamental change of her musical style, but a change of cultural context and market conditions that, in turn, affected her cultural identity. Keywords Arhai, Jovana Backović, world music, ethno, Balkan Folktronica Although Serbian composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Jovana Backović is only 34 years old, the band Arhai can already be considered her lifetime project. The Greek word ‘Arhai’ meaning ‘beginning’ or ‘ancient’ it is aptly chosen to summarise Backović’s artistic mission: rethinking tradition in contemporary context. Нer interest in traditional music was sparked by her father, himself a professional musician and performer of both traditional and popular folk music (Medić 2013). Backović founded Arhai in Belgrade in 1998, while still a pupil at music school Slavenski, and continued to perform with the band while receiving instruction in classical composition and orchestration at the Belgrade Faculty of Music. In its first, Belgrade ‘incarnation’, Arhai was a ten-piece band that developed a fusion of traditional music from the Balkans with am bient sounds and jazz-influenced improvisation, using both acoustic and electric instruments and a quartet of fe male vocalists.

    215 Referentes de la mitología clásica en la obra de Dead Can Dance Simón Luis Gutiérrez Licenciado en Historía por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid Resumen Una de las principales fuentes de inspiración del movimiento gótico está constituído por el mundo mitológico de las antiguas Grecia y Roma. El grupo musical Dead Can Dance es uno de los mejores ejem- plos de esto. En el texto a continuación repasaremos algunos motivos clásicos presentes en su obra musical. Dentro del amplio movimiento gótico es posible identificar, a grandes rasgos, dos corrientes de influencia e inspiración. Podría decirse que el aspecto más llamativo y conocido es la temática “tenebrosa”, es decir, la centrada en los aspectos más escabrosos de la vida y la religión (cris- tiana, casi siempre): el infierno y el castigo, los muertos y aparecidos, la idea de pecado, etc�; otro aspecto no menos importante consiste en la recuperación de determinados elementos e ideales estéticos de la An- tigüedad clásica, si bien es cierto que esta recuperación es usualmente una reinterpretación de dichos ideales desde una perspectiva contem- poránea� Una de las formaciones musicales donde mejor se puede apreciar este último aspecto es la australiana Dead Can Dance, proyecto cuya am- plitud y complejidad musical hace que no se pueda clasificar dentro de casi ninguna corriente o estilo musical, trascendiendo géneros y eti- quetas simplistas. Aun así, es posible identificar al menos tres grandes líneas de pensamiento que animan su obra lírica, a saber: la música y el imaginario de los grupos aborígenes australianos y africanos, la época de la Edad Media europea, y finalmente, la Antigüedad clásica (cultu- ras griega y romana), como principales horizontes de referencia� Estos tres grandes temas los encontramos repartidos a lo largo de toda su obra, pero hay determinados álbumes en los que se aprecia más el predominio de uno sobre los otros.
