De meeste dank gaat uit naar mijn promotor, prof. dr. Gunnar De Boel. Niet alleen begeleidde hij mij bij het schrijven van deze thesis, ook slaagde hij erin, net als professor Georgios Giannakis van de universiteit van Thessaloniki trouwens, om mijn interesse op te wekken voor historische taalkunde. Toen ik in het begin van het eerste semester nog twijfelde over het onderwerp van mijn thesis, vroeg ik om raad bij professor De Boel. Hij keek even naar een gezellig geordende stapel boeken en haalde er vrijwel meteen een exemplaar uit: Σχολείον των ντελικάτων εραστών, van Rigas. Een analyse van dat boek zou wel eens interessante inzichten kunnen opleveren over de taal van toen en zelfs over de taalkwestie, luidde het. Ik hoop dan ook dat er uit het onderzoek iets nuttigs voortgekomen is. Naast professor De Boel wil ik ook Katja de Herdt bedanken, die op een dag onverwachts aanbelde om mij twee boekjes over Rigas uit te lenen. Over boeken gesproken: zonder de hulp van Els De Loor, altijd goedlachs en bereid tot een praatje, zou ik niet aan de benodigde literatuur zijn geraakt. Daarnaast waren er nog een aantal mensen die bewust of onbewust het werk wat lichter maakten. Ik denk daarbij vooral aan mijn vriendin. Zij maakte me ook wegwijs in de wondere wereld van Wordsjablonen, nadat ze me vriendelijk had uitgelachen toen ik zei dat de inhoudstafel en bibliografie van mijn bachelorpaper handmatig waren opgesteld. Tot slot mag ik ook de gezinsleden die mijn tekst nagelezen hebben en mij af en toe vroegen ‘of alles wel nog oké was’, niet vergeten. iii 1 Inleiding Over het ontstaan van de Griekse taalkwestie in de achttiende eeuw is al redelijk wat geschreven, maar veel concreet taalkundig onderzoek is er nog niet verricht. Het doel dat ik mij vooropstel is om de taal van Rigas Feraios (1757-1798) te onderzoeken, en na te gaan welke positie die inneemt tegenover de taal van zijn tijdgenoten. Deze thesis is opgedeeld in twee delen: een literatuurstudie over de taalkwestie, en een taalkundige analyse

Introduction Macedonia, both the ancient historical Greek land and the modern geographical region known by that name, has been perhaps one of the most heavily discussed countries in the world. In the more than two centuries since the representatives of revolutionary France introduced into western insular and continental Greece the ideas and slogans that fostered nationalism, the ancient Greek country has been the subject of inquiry, and the object of myth-making, on the part of archaeologists, historians, ethnologists, political scientists, social anthropologists, geographers and anthropogeographers, journalists and politicians. The changing face of the ancient country and its modern sequel, as recorded in the testimonies and studies of those who have applied themselves to the subject, is the focus of this present work. Since the time, two centuries ago, when the world’s attention was first directed to it, the issue of the future of this ancient Greek land – the “Macedonian Question” as it was called – stirred the interest or attracted the involvement of scientists, journalists, diplomats and politicians, who moulded and remoulded its features. The periodical cri- ses in the Macedonian Question brought to the fore important researchers and generated weighty studies, which, however, with few exceptions, put forward aspects and charac- teristics of Macedonia that did not always correspond to the reality and that served a variety of expediencies. This militancy on the part of many of those who concerned themselves with the ancient country and its modern sequel was, of course, inevitable, given that all or part of that land was claimed by other peoples of south-eastern Europe as well as the Greeks.

For it was then necessary that two crucial questions be answered, namely who were to be considered as citizens of the new state about to be created and what regions it covered. The attempt to find answers to these questions necessarily led to the re-examination of the Greek nation’s historical course over the millenia. For this purpose the terms that express the concepts which register the self-definition of a human group and their use over time, are here examined as well as the links that formed the connection between the groups of Greek-speaking Orthodox Christians who, as a result of historical circumstances, had until then been geographically scattered. One solid link was the unbroken use of their common language; the “ancestral culture” was the other definitive element which had a continuous though uneven presence throughout the centuries. Finally the “place”, having preserved the same geographical name, “Hellas”, through the centuries although its borders were certainly unclear, now took on a weighty significance as regards the conscious identification of the historical land with the new state that the Greeks were struggling to create in the nineteenth century.

In total, Philippidis recorded 232 settlements, in a credible manner, as demonstrated by comparison with information from other sources of the period. The examination of this data reveals the very strong presence of mainly Christian settlements of small dimensions, not exceeding 100 homes, located at relatively low elevations. Also notable is the presence of a few cities exceeding 1000 homes of largely Muslim population, as well as “islets” of settlements with Muslim or mixed populations in flatlands. The settlement complex was supported by monasteries, berths, bazaars and inns, which constituted functional components of the financial activities. This text is part of a study being conducted at the Institute for Neohellenic Research concerning the history of settlements in Greece (fifteenth- twentieth centuries). Il caso della Vera Felicità di Athanasios Psalidas GIORGIO STAMBOULIS Università di Firenze ABSTRACT: This article deals with the spread of Spinoza’s thought in the Eighteenth century Balkans with special regards to Psalidas’ True Happiness. Psalidas’ book presents the first translation of some key parts of Spinoza's Ethics in the context of a theist approach. The analysis presents the hermeneutic comprehension of this document bearing in mind Israel’s interpretation of the Enlightenment and the debate of Greek scholars about Psalidas. The final aim is to furnish a first view on the reception of the Ethics in the Balkans and on how this reception influenced the structure of a seminal work such as True Happiness.
