Places for Struggling Teens™ Published by Woodbury Reports, Inc.™ “It is more important to get it right, than to get it first.” September 2008 - Issue #169 OPEN ACCESS By Lon Woodbury One of the major strengths of our network of private parent-choice residential schools and programs for struggling teens has been its innovation, creativity and ability to rapidly apply new insights and research toward helping children. This has resulted in a wide variety of approaches to helping children, each school or program dealing with problem areas in which they are especially strong. When parents decide their child needs residential placement, they now can choose from among many quality schools and programs to find the right match between a school or program’s strengths and their child’s needs. The resulting network of choices for parents and their children is vastly superior to the old hospital and RTC one-size-fits-all system that was all too common before this network came into existence. The growth of this network has been amazing. We are currently tracking about 650 private parent-choice residential schools and programs around the country, and even with the economy being in the doldrums, there are still a significant number of new start-ups seemingly every month. The growth of this dynamic network has been possible because in the past it has been relatively easy for a dedicated individual to open a program. In the past, all an educational visionary who wanted to establish a residential program needed to do was prepare some space and activities for the children, conform to minimal basic state licensing (perhaps just a foster home approval) and get the word out. Some very successful schools and programs started in this “bootstrap” manner allowed by open access. Essentially, anybody who had a desire could try. Deep financial pockets were helpful but not necessary. However, the screening out process starts immediately and never ends. Those who really didn’t know what they were doing rapidly learned there was much more to providing a program than just providing room and board for kids. These naïve startups consequently closed fairly rapidly, if they even ever opened. Others with no marketing contacts or knowledge never received any inquiries and gave up. Still others couldn’t gain the confidence of any parents or referring professionals and rapidly closed. Then too some didn’t have the monetary resources to withstand slow periods or charged too little for tuition so they also closed. Continued: Access/ pg 3 Inside... Once established, the +HDOWK\5HODWLRQVKLSV founders needed to have the insight to modify their school or program to meet the actual needs of the students and parents, thus gaining a reputation that resulted in future enrollments. )RXQGHG LQ ,QWHU This is an ongoing screening process and many schools PRXQWDLQLVDORQJWHUP and programs that were initially successful floundered UHVLGHQWLDOSURJUDPRIIHULQJ and were forced to close down for many reasons. Even schools and programs that had been successful for KLJKO\LQWHJUDWHGWKHUDSHX years sometimes lose their edge, or made unwise WLFDQGHGXFDWLRQDOVHUYLFHV financial decisions, and either overextended IRU FKLOGUHQ DJHV DW themselves or were forced to close in the face of declining enrollments. DGPLVVLRQ7UHDWPHQWJLYHV WKHVHFKLOGUHQWKHHPRWLRQ The CEDU schools are a prime example of how even a DODQGHGXFDWLRQDOVNLOOVWR flourishing system of schools can flounder from a series of bad management decisions. This is healthy in EHVXFFHVVIXOLQWKHLUIDPLO\ that the inadequate are forced to go away, and those VFKRRODQGFRPPXQLW\2XU that survived were the ones that gained the confidence DFUHFDPSXVLQFOXGHV of parents and child-care professionals, usually IRXU IDPLO\VW\OH FRWWDJ because they provided quality services. HVIRUER\VDQGJLUOV These automatic and natural screening-out processes ,QWHUPRXQWDLQKDVEHHQ work to protect the students and parents from inferior WUHDWLQJ FKLOGUHQ ZLWK D schools and programs. It is not perfect, of course, and inferior schools and programs unfortunately do GHYHORSPHQWDO UHODWLRQDO manage to survive, but I have seen many poor PRGHOVLQFH programs go under because they were weak or lost their competitive edge. The private school for troubled teens, located 26 miles east of Prineville, was one of the last of its kind — a school whose methods originated in the Synanon self-help group, which was widely considered a cult by the late 1970s. By Lon Woodbury DBT Therapy with Girls 2 (Written by Lon in Tucson, AZ while attending the 2011 national NATSAP Conference) Life Saving Tips 5 Today was the first full day of the annual National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP) Conference. This conference VISIT REPORTS: gives us a chance meet in person and catch up on the news around the network from those we have been talking with on the phone or through the SeaChange 6 social media during the past year. Along with simple socializing, these gatherings allow us to compare notes on issues important to the network of schools and programs for young people with problems that have been developing since the last time we have had a chance to NEW talk in person. At the same time there are numerous training opportunities to learn of program developments and of new knowledge being generated by leaders in the network. During this networking, one of the common questions I heard today was “Is the market PERSPECTIVES: saturated?” To those professionals outside this network working in more traditional education and Logos School 8 mental health programs surviving on public funding, this question might seem strange. To Make-Life- those professionals outside this network, the question of funding is a question of politicians Rewarding and civil servants deciding who to fund and how much. Essentially this is a political question Coaching 9 with decisions made based on political considerations.
