LAST TIME OUT LARAMIE, Wyo. (Dec. 8, 2020) – 25th-ranked Gonzaga shot 55 percent from the field and held Wyoming to just 34.6 percent shooting as the Cowgirls fell in their non-conference home finale Tuesday night in the Arena-Auditorium, 89-50.

Wyoming (1-1) trailed by just two, 20-18 after the first quarter but was outscored in the second 22-12 and found themselves trailing at the half, 42-30. The Bulldogs (2-2) shot 9-of-12 from the floor in the second while UW was just 4-of-12. In the second half, Gonzaga picked up right where it left off to end the first and outscored the Cowgirls 47-20 in the final 20 minutes. UW shot just 7-for-25 (28 percent) in the last two quarters.

“Gonzaga’s good players were the difference tonight, their length and physicality caused us to double down in the post and then their ability to shoot the ball let them get on a roll, they played like a top- 20 team tonight,” said Head Coach Gerald Mattinson.

The Bulldogs shot 12-of-20 from 3-point range, a 60 percent clip while Wyoming hit 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) from deep. GU also had a 38-22 scoring edge in paint points while also getting 16 second- chance points and 40 points off the bench. The Cowgirls meanwhile, had three second-chance points and 16 from their bench.

Quinn Weidemann led the way for the Cowgirls with eight points on the night and hit a pair of 3-pointers. McKinley Bradshaw, Dagny Davidsdottir and Alba Sanchez Ramos all added seven. Davidsdottir led UW with six rebounds while Sanchez Ramos dished out three assists. Tommi Olson led Wyoming with four assists in the loss.

Jaye Johnson led the Cowgirl bench with six points as she went 2-for- 4 from 3-point range while Marta Savic, in her first action with the Brown & Gold, scored five points and grabbed four boards. Paula Salazar also made her career debut and chipped in with a pair of buckets and recorded the Cowgirls’ lone .

Jenn Wirth led the way for the Bulldogs as she scored 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and had 10 boards and three assists on the night. Cierra Walker added 12 and went a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range.

UW got out of the gates strong, shooting 7-of-13 in the first quarter, but a 16-0 run from the Bulldogs to end the first and begin the first 3:29 of the second quarter put them up 32-18 and they would not look back, leading by as many as 16 in the half, 28-22 with 3:24 to play.

Sophomore Tereza Vitulova led the Cowgirls in Assists per game 3.5 10th 195th scoring and rebounding with averages of 14.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Senior Taylor Rusk and sophomore Quinn Weidemann each averaged 10.2 points Assist-Turnover Ratio 7.0 1st 9th per game this year. Head coach Gerald Mattinson finished his first year as head coach of the Cowgirls and owns a 17-12 record. He spent the previous 16 seasons on the Wyoming bench as an assistant and associate head coach.

SPREADING THE SCORING The Cowgirls had three different players average double-figure scoring in 2019- 20, marking the first such occurrence since the 2015-16 season. This year, Tereza Vitulova (14.2), Taylor Rusk (10.2) and Quinn Weidemann (10.2) all averaged double figures. In 2015-16, Marquelle Dent (15.5), Marta Gomez (10.7), Jordan Kelley (10.5) and Liv Roberts (10.1) all averaged at least 10 points per game. THE OLSON DIFFERENCE Junior Tommi Olson was a shot of adrenaline for Wyoming’s offense last season. Before she joined the starting lineup, the Cowgirls were 9-9 overall, shot 41.6 percent from the field and averaged 65.6 points, 36.3 rebounds and 12.6 assists per game. Those 13 winning seasons represent just over half of the total number of winning seasons in 46 years of Cowgirl basketball. Mattinson’s professional coaching career began at Weber State as a graduate assistant coach with the men’s basketball program during the 1981-82 season. From 1982-1987, he was the head boy’s basketball coach at Rock Springs High School. He earned Wyoming State Coach of the Year honors and was named Conference Coach of the Year twice. From 1987-90, Mattinson was an assistant men’s coach at Western Wyoming Community College. He was elevated to

GOWYO.COM #GOWYO | PAGE 16 2020-21 COWGIRLS COACHING STAFF HEATHER EZELL Associate Head Coach, Iowa State (‘09) Heather Ezell is entering her sixth season with Cowgirl basketball and her second as the associate head coach in 2019-20. She came to Wyoming after spending four seasons at Southeast Missouri State. She joined the staff in 2011 and was responsible for working with the guards along with organizing practices, game day preparation and running summer camps. In 2012-13, she helped mentor Kara Wright to an Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer selection, marking the first Redhawk to earn postseason honors since the 2008-09 season. Ezell spent the 2010-11 season as an assistant coach at Fairfield University, where the Stags posted a 17-13 overall record and a 10-8 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. She worked primarily with perimeter players while assisting in the day-to-day operations of the program, including practice and game planning, recruiting and coordinating the team’s community service efforts. Ezell had a highly decorated career both collegiately and professionally which began as a four-year letterwinner at Iowa State University (2005-09). She finished her career tied for the Cyclones’ career record with 287 made three-point field goals and finished 10th in program history with 1,339 points. In her senior season, Ezell earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors. She ranked 27th nationally with 2.5 three-point field goals made per game and eighth in the Big 12 with 3.5 assists per contest. Ezell also earned a spot on the 2008 Big 12 All-Tournament Team and helped the Cyclones to three NCAA appearances including the Elite Eight in 2009. Ezell moved onto the professional level in 2009-10, playing in Iceland for Haukar where she was named Best Player in the Iceland Express League. She led the league in points and steals while finishing second in assists and rebounds. She also earned Most Valuable Player recognition in the league’s All-Star Game. A native of Springfield, Mo., Ezell led her Kickapoo High School team to two state championships and a 113-7 record during her prep years. She was named Miss Show Me Basketball as Missouri’s top player in 2005. Ezell graduated from Iowa State in 2009 with bachelor’s degrees in management and marketing.

FALLON LEWIS Assistant Coach, Wyoming (‘14) Fallon Lewis is entering her second season as an assistant coach for the Cowgirls, after spending four seasons in an operations capacity for the Wyoming women’s basketball team. In total, Lewis is starting her fifth year with the Cowgirls. Lewis joined the Cowgirl staff as the Director of Recruiting beginning in September 2015. She was recently named the Assistant Director of Player Development. Lewis returned to her alma mater after spending eight months playing for CB Arxil in Pontevedra, Spain. In 24 games, she averaged 11.9 points and 6.5 rebounds in 27.8 minutes per contest. She also spent time over the summer as a private basketball trainer. Lewis had a highly successful two-year career (2013-14) with the Cowgirls. An Honorable Mention All-Conference selection during her senior campaign, she played in 62 games with 31 starts. In her final season with Wyoming, she averaged 14.3 points and a team-leading 8.9 rebounds. Lewis also recorded 20 points and 21 rebounds in a game becoming only the second player in school history to achieve that. As a junior, she came off the bench and averaged 6.1 points and 3.6 boards in 31 contests. Prior to UW, she spent two seasons at Sheridan College from 2011-12. Lewis was an Honorable Mention NJCAA All-American selection in 2012 and a two-time Region IX All-Conference selection. She helped the Lady Generals to a 45-21 mark and a NJCAA North Sub-Region IX title over her two years. A Dayton, Wyoming native, Lewis graduated with her degree in business administration from the UW in May of 2014 and was a two-time Academic All-Mountain West selection.

RYAN LARSEN Assistant Coach, Minnesota State-Moorhead (‘02) Larsen joins the Cowgirls in 2019 after a six-year stint as the head coach at the South Dakota School of Mines. He compiled a 73-87 (.456) overall record and helped guide the Hardrockers to a pair of appearances in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) postseason tournament in 2017 and 2018. Larsen coached five student-athletes to seven all-RMAC honors during his tenure at South Dakota School of Mines, while seven student- athletes earned 10 academic all-conference accolades. His team also set a single-game school record with 27 assists against Montana State- Billings during the 2016-17 season. The next year, his team set the school record with 242 made three pointers while committing the fourth-fewest personal fouls per game in Division II. Larsen became the head coach of the Hardrockers after serving five years in ermillion,V S.D., as the assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of South Dakota. In his role as an assistant coach for the Coyotes, he was the recruiting coordinator, scouting director, position coach for guards and posts, assisted the head coach with scheduling games and coordinated several off-season camps for the program. Larsen was instrumental in helping the Coyotes to a 75-47 (.618) record during their transition from Division II to Division I basketball. South Dakota competed in two consecutive postseason tournaments, earning a win in the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI) in 2011 and another victory in the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) in 2012. Prior to arriving at USD, Larsen was a member of the Augustana College men’s basketball staff from 2002-07. In his five seasons at Augustana, Larsen helped revitalized the men’s basketball program. In 2006-07, the Vikings went 16-12 which was the team’s highest win total in 15 years. Along with his coaching duties, Larsen was also the recruiting coordinator for three seasons. During that time he recruited three high school student-athletes who earned Player of the Year honors from their respective states. From 1999-02 Larsen was at Minnesota State University-Moorhead. In the 2001-02 season the team posted its best record in nine years and was ranked in the North Central Region for the first time in school history. Larsen graduated from MSU Moorhead, earning his bachelor’s degree in 2002. He obtained his master’s degree from Augustana in 2004.

MATTISON MAISEL Asst. Director of Player Development, Texas Tech (‘15) Mattison Maisel joins the Cowgilr staff in 2019 after working for one year in an academic support role for the athletics department. At UW, Maisel worked with the women’s and men’s basketball teams on the academic side. Her duties included scheduling classes, making tutoring and mentoring appointments, as well as having her door open to anyone that needed a listening ear. Prior to joining the UW academic support office, Maisel spent a year as a graduate assistant at Texas Tech, where she worked with the football and women’s basketball teams. Maisel also earned her master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with concentrations in educational psychology, kinesiol- ogy, and educational leadership. Maisel is no stranger to collegiate athletics, as she was a four-year starter for the Texas Tech softball team. She graduated in 2015 with a Bach- elor of Arts degree in psychology and exercise sport science.
