KEY ADMINISTRATORS DAN GUERRERO KEY ATHLETIC Athletic Director • UCLA ’74 • 9th Year DEPARTMENT STAFF In his eight years as UCLA’s Director of Athletics, Daniel G. Guerrero has boldly placed his imprint on the school’s athletic program. Guerrero is one of the most respected and talented administrators in all of intercol- legiate athletics. He is the current president of the Division I Athletic Directors Associa- tion. In addition, he is the fi rst vice-president of the National Assn. of Collegiate Direc- tors of Athletics (NACDA) and a member of the NACDA Executive Committee. This past June, Guerrero completed a fi ve-year term on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee. As the chair in 2009-10, he was involved with the negotiation of the new $10.8 million, 14-year NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament television package Don Morrison Michael Sondheimer as well as the decision to expand the Tournament to 68 teams. Faculty Athletic Rep. Associate A.D. In Guerrero’s eight years as AD, he has clearly established a pattern of “image and substance” that few in his profession can match. UCLA stands as the No. 1 University in the nation for NCAA team championships (106) won, a number that continues to grow under his direction. In those eight years, UCLA teams have won 20 NCAA team titles (the highest total in the nation in that span) in 11 different sports, fi nished second 16 times and have had an additional 28 Top Five fi nishes (64 total). A staggering 152 teams (of 184 possible) have qualifi ed for NCAA post-season competition and the football team has appeared in seven bowl games.

Fall 2010 No Limits Idea Shop and IPRO 2.0 Are Facilitating Limitless Learning Steven PoSter Zooming in on technology Cheryl hyman Finding her Spirit reSearCh Secure Broadband networks, Developing a hand exoskeleton from the President “TellmeandIforget.ShowmeandIremember.Involvemeand Iunderstand.”—Chinese proverb When I started teaching at the college level in 1971, there was little pedagogy to the profession except “smart in, smart out.” The emphasis was on course content and not on learning, which was assumed to be the responsibility of students. The fact is, learning is the responsibility of both students and faculty, and it doesn’t occur just in the classroom. There has been much progress in college-level teaching since I started. No university teacher disputes the importance of gaining disciplinary knowledge; a student should graduate knowing something. However, now there is an appreciation that students learn in different ways, not just one way, and that teachers must try to reach their students using multiple approaches. There is a greater appreciation that out-of-classroom activities are very important to supplement in-class learning. Communication skills, the ability to work in teams composed of persons with different educational and social backgrounds, and embracing change as an opportunity instead of a threat—these attributes are also part of learning at the college level. Students tend to have difficulty in courses that involve open-ended problems where there is not a single correct answer or perfect solution; of course, their careers will be determined by how well they address such problems. One of IIT’s priorities is to provide a distinctive education.

One of the things he said was that he felt very fortunate to have been the beneficiary of the vision and generosity of Philip Danforth Armour. Martin, who grew up in Chicago as the son of a grocer, said he felt that he was the kind of kid BRINGING that Philip was trying to help when he contributed the money to found IIT in the late nineteenth century. 12 Martin’s story of Philip Armour is a reminder of another person who left a great legacy—John Rettaliata. In this issue of the magazine, John reminisces about his days as president of IIT,including his relationship with Mies van der Rohe, the extensive construction of BYTES Main Campus, and his constant role as fundraiser.

  • A Report on Research at IIT
INVENTING THE FUTURE TOGETHER A Report on Research at IIT Highlighting advances in basic and applied research, technology transfer and commercialization. Report on Research 2 Message from the Dean As a research university, IIT’s mission is to create and disseminate knowledge and technologies that address national and global needs and priorities. In the past five years, the dedicated faculty, staff and research students of IIT have made tremendous progress in research and sponsored programs. Our researchers have contributed an amazing array of investigations, analyses, designs, prototypes, services, and tools. The charts and graphs on this page and the next two pages demonstrate our commitment to our research accom- plishments. The trends reported in this document are encouraging: • Over the past five years, sponsored project revenues have doubled. • The internal Education and Research Initiative Funds awarded to faculty on a competitive basis have achieved a 17-to-1 return in external program funding in the past five years. • IIT Research Scholarships offered to domestic students in sciences and engineering have attracted many highly qualified U.S. nationals and members of underrepresented groups in engineering and sciences to various graduate programs. • Seven research centers are established in critical technical areas. • Marketing and licensing of IIT inventions and technology commercialization activities have increased significantly. To enhance participation in research, the Graduate College continues to implement new faculty initiatives. In 2003, we offered tuition cost share for all Ali Cinar, Vice Provost for Research and Dean of graduate students budgeted on projects that carried full, on-campus, indirect cost. the Graduate College Also beginning in 2003, faculty were given spending jurisdiction on10 percent of the indirect cost recovery associated with their research projects to enhance their research infrastructure.

CENTER FOR HISTORY OF PHYSICS NEWSLETTER Vol. XXXIX, Number 2 Fall 2007 One Physics Ellipse, College Park, MD 20740-3843, Tel. 301-209-3165 The Project to Document the History of Physicists in Industry: Some Notes on Methodology By Katy Lawley he Project to Document the History of Physicists in T Industry ends this December, and so far this year we’ve completed the last of the site visits and interviews at industrial labs—at Raytheon in January and Ford in June—and focused on analyzing the 132 interviews that we’ve conducted along with other information that we’ve collected. When we planned the study, we decided that individual interviews with physicists, R&D managers, and information professionals (e.g., technical librarians, archivists, and records managers) who work at 15 of the 27 largest employers of physicists in industry would be the best way to capture the experience and perspectives of the participants with as much richness and context as possible. Business in general has frequently been described as one of the least documented sectors in American society, and sources on the work of corporate physicists are especially rare. So our purpose has been to learn as much as we can about the extent to which these records do exist; how companies Pope Pius XII greets Professor and Mrs. Harlow Shapley following treat correspondence (including e-mail), lab notebooks, the Pope’s address to the International Union (IAU) assembly at and other documentary materials of scientists today; the Castel Gandolfo. Shapley had previously won the Pope Pius XI prize, effect of the computer revolution on records keeping; but had not personally appeared to receive it.
