    INVENTING THE FUTURE TOGETHER A Report on Research at IIT Highlighting advances in basic and applied research, technology transfer and commercialization. Report on Research 2 Message from the Dean As a research university, IIT’s mission is to create and disseminate knowledge and technologies that address national and global needs and priorities. In the past five years, the dedicated faculty, staff and research students of IIT have made tremendous progress in research and sponsored programs. Our researchers have contributed an amazing array of investigations, analyses, designs, prototypes, services, and tools. The charts and graphs on this page and the next two pages demonstrate our commitment to our research accom- plishments. The trends reported in this document are encouraging: • Over the past five years, sponsored project revenues have doubled. • The internal Education and Research Initiative Funds awarded to faculty on a competitive basis have achieved a 17-to-1 return in external program funding in the past five years. • IIT Research Scholarships offered to domestic students in sciences and engineering have attracted many highly qualified U.S. nationals and members of underrepresented groups in engineering and sciences to various graduate programs. • Seven research centers are established in critical technical areas. • Marketing and licensing of IIT inventions and technology commercialization activities have increased significantly. To enhance participation in research, the Graduate College continues to implement new faculty initiatives. Y.” YOUNG PARTH KAPADIA DANIEL MAGASANIK From Rockets to Rockin’ Blazing the Flower Trail Winds of Change from the President “I live my life in widening circles that reach out across the world.” —Rainer Maria Rilke I especially look forward to two times of the year on the academic calendar. One is Commencement. I like to remind people that graduation is associated with “commencement” for a good reason. It is the beginning of “life after IIT” and, if we have done our jobs well, our students start traveling down a road carrying with them the tools they need to be global citizens, contributors to society, and innovative thinkers. The second time is the beginning of fall semester. I get particular pleasure in welcoming back our returning students and getting the chance to know those who are arriving on campus for the first time. This fall, enrollment and retention reached new heights. Retention, defined as the percentage of first- year students who return for their second year, now stands at 93 percent—the fourth year in a row we have exceeded 90 percent. Our first-year, full-time undergraduate enrollment is the highest since 1981, and our total enrollment (graduate plus undergraduate) is the highest since 1968. There is a renewed energy and spirit on campus, in part from having more students, but also because of the young men and women who have come to IIT from 94 countries. They bring with them new perspectives—and their presence adds to the cultural richness for which our university is known.
