National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery – Queen Square The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), Queen Square is an internationally renowned specialist hospital within UCLH Trust. The NHNN is the UK's largest dedicated neurological and neurosurgical hospital providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for the diagnosis, treatment and care of all conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nervous system and muscles. The Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology provides a service to all other departments in the hospital for inpatient and outpatient consultations as well as running its own outpatient service. Fundus imaging, OCT and automated perimetry are available in the department. The National Hospital is part of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and there are close links on-site with University College London Institute of Neurology. Within the Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology there are close links with Moorfields Eye Hospital. The post-holder will be encouraged to attend post-graduate teaching activities at Moorfields as the timetable permits. Neuro-Ophthalmology The Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology provides a service to all other departments in the hospital for inpatient and outpatient consultations as well as running its own outpatient service. Job Purpose The post is educationally approved as a Year 7 Advanced Speciality Training Post (ASTO)/ Trainee Selected Component in Neuro-Ophthalmology within the London Deanery/ Health Education England Training Programme in Ophthalmology. The post is at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and supervised by Mr James Acheson, Consultant Neuro-Ophthalmologist. Responsibilities include working in outpatient clinics to see ward referrals and booked outpatients under the supervision of consultant ophthalmologists and consultant neurologists. The trainee will acquire expertise in the assessment and management of a wide range of neuro-ophthalmic conditions including papilloedema and raised intracranial pressure, neurological causes of visual failure, ocular motility abnormalities and facial hyperkinetic syndromes. There is no surgical training or on-call responsibility in this post. Research The National Hospital is an important research institution and each individual will be expected to contribute to the research and development and teaching and training within the department. Key Working Relationships The post-holder reports to the consultant ophthalmologists and neurologists who undertake out-patient work in the Department of Neuro-Ophthalmology, Queen Square. The post-holder will liase as required with Consultant Neurologists and Neurosurgeons and their junior staff through the hospital to arrange consults in the department or on the wards as clinically required. The post-holder will work with the ophthalmology and neurology trainees, the orthoptists and the medical photographer within the department to ensure the correct clinical and diagnostic tests are undertaken. The post-holder will assist with the teaching and training of less experienced medical and technical staff attached to the department as appropriate. Key Results Areas Main Duties and Responsibilities The post holder must be the holder of the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, or equivalent, and must be registered with the General Medical Council and be eligible to work in the UK. The hospital has a no-smoking policy and all staff are required to observe this at all times. All staff are also required to observe and promote the Trust’s Equal Opportunities policy. 1. To attend consultant-supervised clinics as per timetable. 2. To be available during normal office hours for consultations with neurosurgical and neurology staff relating to inpatients in the hospital and to facilitate inpatient consultations on request. These are normally seen in consultant-supervised clinics. 3. To undertake fundus fluorescein angiograms, perimetry and ocular coherence tomography studies on patients as directed by supervising consultants. 4. To undertake peri-ocular botulinum injections as directed by supervising consultants. 5. To participate in the postgraduate teaching programme at the National Hospital and in Neuro-Ophthalmology at Moorfields Eye Hospital. This comprises one-monthly clinical neuro-ophthalmology demonstration on Monday afternoons, and Tuesday lunchtimes and weekly neurology Grand Rounds on Thursday afternoons. 6. The timetable includes cataract surgery and general ophthalmology to reflect the curriculum requirements for Ophthalmic Specialist Training at ST7 level and has educational approval from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. For post-CCT trainees, this option can be converted to further Neuro-Ophthalmology experience as appropriate to the candidates training requirements.
