Indian philosophy Encyclopædia Britannica Article Indian philosophy the systems of thought and reflection that were developed by the civilizations of the Indian subcontinent. They include both orthodox (astika) systems, namely, the Nyaya, Vaisesika, Samkhya, Yoga, Purva-mimamsa, and Vedanta schools of philosophy, and unorthodox (nastika) systems, such as Buddhism and Jainism. Indian thought has been concerned with various philosophical problems, significant among them the nature of the world (cosmology), the nature of reality (metaphysics), logic, the nature of knowledge (epistemology), ethics, and religion. General considerations Significance of Indian philosophies in the history of philosophy In relation to Western philosophical thought, Indian philosophy offers both surprising points of affinity and illuminating differences. The differences highlight certain fundamentally new questions that the Indian philosophers asked. The similarities reveal that, even when philosophers in India and the West were grappling with the same problems and sometimes even suggesting similar theories, Indian thinkers were advancing novel formulations and argumentations. Problems that the Indian philosophers raised for consideration, but that their Western counterparts never did, include such matters as the origin (utpatti) and apprehension (jñapti) of truth (pramanya). Problems that the Indian philosophers for the most part ignored but that helped shape Western philosophy include the question of whether knowledge arises from experience or from reason and distinctions such as that between analytic and synthetic judgments or between contingent and necessary truths. Indian thought, therefore, provides the historian of Western philosophy with a point of view that may supplement that gained from Western thought. A study of Indian thought, then, reveals certain inadequacies of Western philosophical thought and makes clear that some concepts and distinctions may not be as inevitable as they may otherwise seem. -

Sri Madhawacharya, the foremost Vaishnawa philosopher, who is the last of the three great Teachers,- Sri Shankara, Sri Ramanuja and Sri Madhwa,- is so far practically unknown to the English-reading public of India. This is, therefore the first attempt to present his philosophy to the wider public. Madhwa philosophy has got two aspects, one universal and the other, particular. Course Description and Objectives: The Vedanta, or Brahma, Sutras has emerged as the most important of the six schools of Indian philosophy, and, indeed, has almost become synonymous with Hindu philosophy. Written in order to clarify the sometimes abstruse statements of the Upanisads, the oldest philosophical texts in Hinduism, the cryptic nature of the Vedanta Sutras in turn produced a number of distinct streams of commentarial interpretation. This course will attempt an overview of the main schools of Vedantic thought up to the medieval period -- Sankara, Ramanuja, Madhva, Nimbarka, Vallabha and Baladeva. Attention will be paid to some of the prominent points of agreement as well as contestation amongst some of these schools. Course Prerequisites: None (but some prior knowledge of Hindu philosophy recommended). Course Requirement: Class attendance and participation (10% of the final grade); a mid term exam (25% of the final grade each); a final exam (25% of the final grade), an 8- 10 page paper (40% of the grade). A one page discussion paper is due each week for each Gita chapter responding to a given question on that chapter reflecting a thorough reading of the material (late papers will be penalized). In addition to this, students will be assigned class presentations on the readings, and their attendance record and overall performance in class along with the response papers will factor into the remaining 10% of the grade. -

There are only a couple of significant studies on Nimbarka, published about 50 years ago. The main reason for not ransacking this system seems to be the non availability of the basic texts. The followers of this school did not give much importance to the publications and mostly remained absorbed in the sastric analysis of the Ultimate Reality and its realization. One question still remains unanswered as to why there is no reference to Sankarabhasya in Nimbarka's commentary on the Brahma-sutras entitled '"IVie Vedanta-pari jata-saurabha", and why Nimbarka has not refuted the views of his opponents, as the other Vaisnava Acaryas such as R"amanuja, Vallabha, ^rikara, Srikantha and Baladeva Vidyabhusana have done. A comprehensive study of the Nimbarka school of Vedanta is still a longlelt desideratum. Even today the basic texts of this school are not available to scholars and whatsoever are available, they are in corrupt form and the editions are full of mistakes. (ii) On account of the lack of academic interest on the part of the followers of this school, no critical edition of any Sanskrit text has so far been prepared. - In search of UNKNOWN How ancient are Vedas, Vedanga Jyotisha and Surya Siddhantha ? वेदमयीं नादमयीं बिꅍदुमयीं परपदोद्यददꅍदुमयीं मꅍरमयीं तꅍरमयीं प्रकृबतमयीं नौबम बवश्वबवक्रुबतमयीं Pidaparty Purna Satya Hariprasad e-mail: [email protected] Dated 27th December 2017 1 Abstract Vedas, Vedanga Jyotisha, Surya Siddhanta are known as “apaurusheyas” meaning that their author and their period is unknown. No serious attempt seems to have been made to determine the age of these ‘apaurusheyas’. In this short paper, an attempt has been made by the author to determine VEDIC AGE using Equinoxes and their precession. He relied heavily on available evidence in Rig-Veda, Vedanga Jyotisha, Brahma Siddhanta, Surya Siddhanta etc and quoted extensively from these sources to support his contentions. The author is neither a scholar nor a scientist. At best he may be called an ANALYST with bare minimum knowledge of Sanskrit. He has abundant curiosity to search for the truth beyond what is known. 2 In search of UNKNOWNs In Hindu mythology, Brahma is known to be responsible for creation of the Universe – including Earth, Planets, stars, oceans, living and non-living beings, सवेषामेव जंतूनां शतमेव आयु셁च्यते तद्चच्वासप्राण काल: समस्त्वेष बवबनणणयः Brahma’s life-span is also limited to 100 years in his time scale. Time Scales of Brahma and Humans are very different. Brahma Siddhanta or Paitamaha Siddhanta provides details of time scale in Brahma’s life and their equivalents solar years in time scale of human beings.
