History, traditions and historical centre The Town of Cervia is known, not only as an important tourist resort, but also as an ancient Salt Town . The “white gold” production, probably started in the Etruscan period, became very active from the 10th Century and had a strategic role in the social, urban and architectural development of the Town. A town which was completely reconstructed brick by brick at the end of the XVII century.

In fact, the old Cervia was situated in the middle of the Saltpans and, unfortunately, as all the material was used for the construction of the New Town near the Sea, no ruins remain of Cervia Vecchia. Cervia Nuova – New Cervia

Cervia Vecchia – Old Cervia The rectangular shape of the historical centre reminds us that the city is one of the rare Italian planned cities built on a definite plan. It was constructed between 1698 and 1712 .
