Aldesa Valley lies in the Tabuk Province of northwest Saudi Arabia and because of the presence of permanent water, is thought to contain high avian richness. We conducted an inventory of avian species in Aldesa Valley, using timed area-searches during May 10–August 10 in 2014 and 2015 to detect species occurrence. We detected 6860 birds belonging to 19 species. We also noted high human use of this area including agriculture and recreational activities. Maintaining species diversity is important in areas receiving anthropogenic pressures, and we encourage additional surveys to further identify species occurrence in Aldesa Valley. [email protected] Resum S'ha investigat la diversitat morfològica en 129 espècies de lacèrtids i la seva relació amb l'ecologia, per mitjà de mètodes comparatius, utilitzant set variables morfomètriques. La mida corporal és la variable més important, determinant un gradient entre espècies de petita i gran mida independentment evolucionades al llarg de la filogènia dels lacèrtids. Aquesta variable està forta i positivament correlacionada amb les altres, emmascarant els patrons de diversitat morfològica. Anàlisis multivariants en les variables ajustades a la mida corporal mostren una covariació negativa entre les mides relatives de la cua i les extremitats. Remarcablement, les espècies arborícoles i semiarborícoles (Takydromus i el clade africà equatorial) han aparegut dues vegades independentment durant l'evolució dels lacèrtids i es caracteritzen per cues extremadament llargues i extremitats anteriors relativament llargues en comparació a les posteriors. El llangardaix arborícola i planador Holaspis, amb la seva cua curta, constitueix l’única excepció. Un altre cas de convergència ha estat trobat en algunes espècies que es mouen dins de vegetació densa o herba (Tropidosaura, Lacerta agilis, Takydromus amurensis o Zootoca) que presenten cues llargues i extremitats curtes. Al contrari, les especies que viuen en deserts, estepes o matollars amb escassa vegetació aïllada dins grans espais oberts han desenvolupat extremitats posteriors llargues i anteriors curtes per tal d'assolir elevades velocitats i maniobrabilitat. The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. This paper presents the first quantitative ethnobotanical knowledge and practices of using native plants for different ailments from Namal Valley of Pakistan. Data was gathered by interviewing 350 informants through semi-structured questionnaires. A total of 217 taxa belonging to 166 genera and 70 families were documented. Fabaceae and Asteraceae families were found to be the most cited families (with 19 and 18 species receptively). Herbs represent the most cited life form (71%) and flower was the most widely used part (34.8%) with decoction as main mode of the utilization (41.5%). On the basis of use values, the most commonly used ethnobotanical taxa in the Valley were reported to be Euphorbia heterophylla (0.7) and Merremia dissecta (0.6). The highest RFC value was noted for Aloe vera (0.14) while highest ICF value was estimated for dental problems category (0.7). -

Pleistocene reefs of the Egyptian Red Sea: environmental change and community persistence Lorraine R. Casazza School of Science and Engineering, Al Akhawayn University, Ifrane, Morocco ABSTRACT The fossil record of Red Sea fringing reefs provides an opportunity to study the history of coral-reef survival and recovery in the context of extreme environmental change. The Middle Pleistocene, the Late Pleistocene, and modern reefs represent three periods of reef growth separated by glacial low stands during which conditions became difficult for symbiotic reef fauna. Coral diversity and paleoenvironments of eight Middle and Late Pleistocene fossil terraces are described and characterized here. Pleistocene reef zones closely resemble reef zones of the modern Red Sea. All but one species identified from Middle and Late Pleistocene outcrops are also found on modern Red Sea reefs despite the possible extinction of most coral over two-thirds of the Red Sea basin during glacial low stands. Refugia in the Gulf of Aqaba and southern Red Sea may have allowed for the persistence of coral communities across glaciation events. Stability of coral communities across these extreme climate events indicates that even small populations of survivors can repopulate large areas given appropriate water conditions and time. Govt. College Jhunjhunu Abstract: Plant diversity remains essential for human beings, providing numerous modern and traditional remedies to the healthcare system. The vast land of Rajasthan together with its vegetation and flora has a variety of medicinal plants growing in different habitats. The present study aimed to document the preliminary analysis of rare and threatened medicinal plants of Beer Jhunjhunu Conservation Reserve of Rajasthan. The study area is a protected forest area and considered as important in terms of biodiversity. The area harbors rich flora and fauna. However, the rich resources including medicinal plants are disappearing at an alarming rate due to over- exploitation. Therefore, the management of traditional medicinal plant resources has become a matter of urgency. Conservation of the species in natural habitat and artificial regeneration would be the best opinion to recover the species from near extinction. WESLEY ABSTRACT A spatio-temporal study of the brachyuran assemblages at five marine habitats at Maavah Island, Laamu atoll, Maldives, was conducted for a period of two years from April 2001 to March 2003. Forty-seven species and a sub-species were collected from the study sites. An analysis of the species diversity of the study sites revealed that distributions of families and species were site-specific although some species have wider distributions than others and that there were seasonal variations at some of the sites. The highest species richness (S = 32) and the highest diversity index was shown by a site at north lagoon, which has complex and heterogeneous habitats. The south-east beach brachyuran community, which was low in species richness, exhibited the lowest evenness. An analysis of the constancy index of the different brachyuran communities revealed that the ratio of the species number and abundance of the constant species were considerably higher than the accessory and accidental species. -
