Agnelli e Ravegnani pp 129-30; Very rare First editiion of a five act comedy in verse written by Lodivico Ariosto until verse 14 of the fourth scene of the fourth act and then finished by his brother Gabriel. The 19th century English critic John Addington Symonds writes, “the unmistakable stamp of [Ariosto’s] ripest genius impressed upon the style no less than on the structure of the plot.” The merit of the play lies in the characters, which are “ably conceived and sustained with more than even Ariosto’s usual skill. Each of the servants, too, has a well-marked physiognomy . the most original of all the dramatis personae the excellent keeper of lodgings* for Ferrarese students.” Symonds continues, “Each of these characters has been copied from the life. The taint of Latin comedy has been purged out of them. La Brillante journée is the first equestrian parade and carrousel that took place at the palace of Versailles June 4th and 5th 1685. This printed programme for the festival includes descriptions of costumes and setting, as well as, a list of the participants and a summary of the events. Completed shortly before the event, the 70p programme was published for the notables at the event and for the enthralled public of Paris who could get the programme at the booksellers or at Versailles. It provided (and still provides) a factual guide to the participants, details of their dress, the order of the parade and a summary of the contests that followed The printed programme La Brillante journée is a “remarkably full treatment” of events of the carrousel which was organized and led by Louis, Dauphin of France (1661-1711), son of Louis XIV. Versailles, seat of royal power of Louis XIV and his family, had become one of the most ornate and sumptuous courts in Europe. The parade carrousel included exotic animals, oriental luxuries, and Arabian horses. Mary "Moll" Davis (also Davies or Davys; ca. 1648 – 1708) was a seventeenth-century entertainer and courtesan, dancer singer, and actress. Davis was born around 1648 in Westminster. Not much is known of her until the early 1660s when she became an actress in the 'Duke's Theatre Company' and boarded with the company's manager, Sir William Davenant. Like other performers on the early-English stage, Moll Davis was a versatile performer. From her first appearance in the early 1660s, however, Moll s was particularly praised, by Pepys and others, for her dancing. On 18 February 1662, Pepy’s first reference to a female dancer came when he saw Davenant’s The Law Against Lovers[adaptation of Shakespear’s Measure for Measure], where Davis played Viola. Pepys notes “...a good play and well performed, especially the little girl’s (whom I never saw act before) dancing and singing.” Pepys’ in his diary for the 1660s notes his enjoyment of a number of Davis’ performances where she danced the “jigg”. (see Van Lennep. The London Stage 1660-1800, Part I, p48). Later she became the dancing partner of Josias Priest (c. 1645 – 3 January 1735 in Chelsea, London. Trisel A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC May 2015 Committee: Katherine Meizel, Advisor Christopher Scholl Kevin Bylsma ii ABSTRACT Katherine Meizel, Advisor This paper explores the history and recent rise in popularity of small-scale opera. Small- scale opera, originally referred to as chamber opera, and recently referred to as “Micro-opera”, “NANOWorks”, et cetera, has gained popularity in the past forty years due to artistic and financial reasons. The genre reflects the need for companies to find financially viable ways to continue to produce and perform classical music in a poor economic climate. The short length and relatively simple plots of the works in this genre also reflect the shift in media consumption on a broad level in the United States. While the genre is growing in popularity today, it has ties to historical practices, including some of the first documented operas written in the Baroque period. This paper provides a historical account of iterations of small-scale opera and culminates in interviews with professionals working in the field today. Through my research, I conclude that the genre is likely to succeed in the 21st century. This is due to the financial viability small-scale opera affords to both those producing and attending these works. Small-scale opera provides composers with a flexible medium in which they can explore writing sung drama that is substantially more likely to be produced than full-length works.

Numerous Baroque operas are currently being rediscovered, recorded, and (re)staged, renowned conductors are investing their time and energy in unperformed (or ‘unperformable’) works, and singers of high caliber assemble record-selling recitals from arias by such forgotten composers as Antonio Caldara or Nicola Porpora. Now that seventeenth- and eighteenth-century opera have returned sound and safe from the library to the theater, where they belong, it seems that even the most conservative spectator is ready to adapt his (post-)romantic expectations to re-embrace, say, simple recitative and da capo arias.   • 1 1. Alessandro Scarlatti Was an Italian Baroque Composer Who Lived
    1. Alessandro Scarlatti was an Italian Baroque composer who lived from 1600-1725. Father to Domenico and Pietro Filippo Scarlatti, Alessandro is also father to the development of an opera style bridging the Baroque and Classical periods, as well as an innovative composer of chamber cantatas. Scarlatti’s early works, primarily operas and secular cantatas, were written and performed in Rome until 1684. These operas, or “opera seria”, were relatively short and included much comic relief injected into the often heavy or tragic plots. In 1677, the Pope outlawed public opera. Thus, Scarlatti’s early operas were performed only privately in palaces of the Roman aristocracy and clergy. In 1684, Scarlatti became director of the Chapel Royal to the Viceroy of Naples, a prestigious post that allowed him to create large-scale operas with involved, elaborate plots and ornate scenery. Most importantly, these new operas featured a pioneering development of Scarlatti’s: the da capo aria, occurring at the climactic, most stirring part of a scene. This added to the emotive intensity of the plot, keeping the audience more engaged as well as more clearly delineating the narrative of the story through keeping scene transitions more obviously marked. After leaving Naples in 1702, Scarlatti returned to Rome where he developed the grand da capo aria and the Italian overture in three movements (fast-slow- fast) in his 1705 serenata for soprano and castrato soloists with orchestra, Endimione e Cinta. Scarlatti returned to Naples and later to Rome between 1708 and his death in 1725, recommencing his Chapel Royal position. By this time, aria-centered opera is at its peak of popularity and bel canto singing now “assumes its 18th century definition as vocal music which features elaborate coloratura embellishment which rivals instrumental technique.”1 His formal 3-act opera buffa (comic opera), Il trionfo dell’onore, is the first of its kind, premiering in Naples in 1718.

Für die Ballette liegt das Vorbild des Versailler Hofes auf der Hand und ist auch bis in die Details hinein von der Forschung nachgewiesen worden2. Bei der zweiten Gruppe von Werken, die auf dem Titelblatt der Librettodrucke in der Regel als »Singe-Spiel« bezeichnet werden, ist diese Orientierung an europäischen Gattungen hingegen nicht immer sofort er- kennbar. Gewiss, mit dem 1659 in Wolfenbüttel aufgeführten Orpheus aus Thracien3 liegt die Bearbeitung jenes berühmten Librettos von Alessandro Striggio vor, das bekanntlich in Monteverdis Vertonung Musik - geschichte schrieb, doch gerade die Orpheus-Bearbeitung meidet als einziger Text die Gattungsbezeich- nung Singe-Spiel und nennt das Werk auf dem Titelblatt merkwürdig umständlich ein »in musi calische Noten« übersetztes »tragisches Getichte« 4. Andere Libretti wiederum, die wie die Andromeda oder der Regier-Kunst-Schatten als Singe-Spiele bezeichnet werden, stellen Adaptionen französischer Sprechtheaterstücke dar 5. In der Forschung wurde daher denn auch seit den Anfängen darüber diskutiert, ob die Bezeichnung Singe-Spiel tatsächlich eine Oper meine6.
