A DIACHRONIC EXAMINATION OF THE ERECHTHEION AND ITS RECEPTION Alexandra L. James Coulton Abstract iii ABSTRACT “A Diachronic Examination of the Erechtheion and Its Reception” examines the social life of the Ionic temple on the Athenian Akropolis, which was built in the late 5th century B.C. to house Athens’ most sacred cults and relics. Using a contextualized diachronic approach, this study examines both the changes to the Erechtheion between its construction and the middle of the 19th century A.D., as well as the impact the temple had on the architecture and art of these successive periods. This approach allows the evidence to shed light on new areas of interest such as the Post-Antique phases of the building, in addition to affording a better understanding of problems that have plagued the study of the Erechtheion during the past two centuries. This study begins with a re-examination of all the pertinent archaeological, epigraphical, and literary evidence, and proposes a wholly new reconstruction of how the Erechtheion worked physically and ritually in ancient times. After accounting for the immediate influence of the Erechtheion on subsequent buildings of the Ionic order, an argument for a Hellenistic rather than Augustan date for the major repairs to the temple is presented. -

Steeped in the classical training of an English gentleman, Edward Dodwell (1777/78– 1832) first traveled through Greece in 1801. He returned in 1805 in the company of an Italian artist, Simone Pomardi (1757–1830), and together they toured the country for fourteen months, drawing and documenting the landscape with exacting detail. They produced around a thousand illustrations, most of which are now in the collection of the Packard Humanities Institute in Los Altos, California. A selection from this rich archive is presented here for the first time in the United States. Dodwell and Pomardi frequently used a camera obscura, an optical device that made it easier to create accurate images. Beyond providing evidence for the appearance of monuments and vistas, their illustrations manifest the ideal of the picturesque that enraptured so many European travelers. The sight of ancient temples lying in ruin, or of the Greek people under Turkish rule as part of the Ottoman Empire, prompted meditation on the transience of human accomplishments. As Dodwell himself wrote: “When we contemplated the scene around us, and beheld the sites of ruined states, and kingdoms, and cities, which were once elevated to a high pitch of prosperity and renown, but which have now vanished like a dream . we could not but forcibly feel that nations perish as well as individuals.” Dodwell’s own words accompany the majority of images in this exhibition. His descriptions are drawn from his Classical and Topographical Tour through Greece, during the Years 1801, 1805, and 1806 (London, 1819). The author’s original spelling, capitalization, and punctuation have been retained. -

Little is known about Page’s life, but the freshness of his approach impressed me, as did his evident pleasure in drawing ruins. His relationship with his patron and probable pupil, Mary Hamilton Campbell, Lady Ruthven, an amateur archaeologist who appears to have taken him to Greece, was previously unknown, as was Page’s involvement with her brother William Campbell, with whom he travelled to Turkey. There is more work to be done on Page, but in the meantime I hope this catalogue will add a little to our understanding of the Enlightenment fascination with classical Greece. My own longstanding interest in the Ottoman period remains undimmed, and it has been a pleasure to revisit it. -

Three times during the night he had waked up thinking it was morning. He could hardly wait for this special day to come. This was the day that his tutor, his paidagogos, Phoinikas, had promised to take him to the Sanctuary of Asklepios, just below the Acropolis. There he could ask the god, who was the patron of medicine, to grant him his great wish: to become some day himself a physician, to help his fellow human beings, to lessen pain and to cure illness, even the most difficult and severe! He was sure the healer-god would make his dream come true… Phoinikas had told him that Asklepios was the oldest and best physician of all time, way ahead of all the others. It was even said that he could raise the dead; and there was a story that once upon a time Hades, the god of the Underworld, had complained to Zeus that Asklepios had raised so many of the dead that there were fewer people living in his underworld kingdom, which was in danger of becoming empty. -

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 11, 2014 MEDIA CONTACTS: Rebecca Baldwin Nina Litoff (312) 443-3625 (312) 443-3363 [email protected] [email protected] THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO PRESENTS HEAVEN AND EARTH: ART OF BYZANTIUM FROM GREEK COLLECTIONS Over 60 Works From Greece Represent Life in the Empire that Lasted for More than a Millennium A new exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, Heaven and Earth: Art of Byzantium from Greek Collections, presents more than 60 superb artworks of the Byzantine era, from the 4th to the 15th centuries. Organized by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports of Athens, Greece, with the collaboration of the Benaki Museum, Athens, and originally exhibited at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the exhibition includes major artistic holdings from Greece consisting of mosaics, sculptures, manuscripts, luxury glass, silver, personal adornments, liturgical textiles, icons, and wall paintings. About one third of the original exhibition will be presented in the Art Institute’s Mary and Michael Jaharis Galleries of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine Art from September 27, 2014, through February 15, 2015. For more than 1,000 years, Greece was part of the vast Byzantine Empire, established in 330 A.D. by the emperor Constantine the Great, who moved the capital of the Roman Empire east to a small town named Byzantium in modern-day Turkey. Renamed for him and transformed into Constantinople, Byzantium would come to represent an empire of splendor and power that endured for more than a millennium. Greek replaced Latin as the official language, and Greece itself was home to important centers of theology, scholarship, and artistic production—as 1 evidenced by the luxurious manuscripts displayed in the exhibition. -
