The 239 Year Timeline Of America’s Involvement in Military Conflict By Isaac Davis Region: USA Global Research, December 20, 2015 Theme: History, US NATO War Agenda Activist Post 18 December 2015 I should welcome almost any war, for I think this country needs one. – President Theodore Roosevelt The American public and the world have long since been warned of the dangers of allowing the military industrial complex to become such an integral part of our economic survival. The United States is the self-proclaimed angel of democracy in the world, but just as George Orwell warned, war is the health of the state, and in the language of newspeak, democracy is the term we use to hide the reality of the nature of our warfare state. In truth, the United States of America has been engaged in some kind of war during 218 out of the nation’s total 239 years of existence. Put another way, in the entire span of US history, this country has only experienced 21 years without conflict. For a sense of perspective on this sobering statistic, consider these4 facts about the history of US involvement in military conflict: Pick any year since 1776 and there is about a 91% chance that America was involved in some war during that calendar year. No U.S. president truly qualifies as a peacetime president. Instead, all U.S. presidents can technically be considered “war presidents.” The U.S. has never gone a decade without war. The only time the U.S. went five years without war (1935-40) was during the isolationist period of the Great Depression. -

Microbiological Spoilage of Fruits and Vegetables Margaret Barth, Thomas R. Hankinson, Hong Zhuang, and Frederick Breidt Introduction Consumption of fruit and vegetable products has dramatically increased in the United States by more than 30% during the past few decades. It is also estimated that about 20% of all fruits and vegetables produced is lost each year due to spoilage. The focus of this chapter is to provide a general background on microbiological spoilage of fruit and vegetable products that are organized in three categories: fresh whole fruits and vegetables, fresh-cut fruits and vegetables, and fermented or acidified veg- etable products. This chapter will address characteristics of spoilage microorgan- isms associated with each of these fruit and vegetable categories including spoilage mechanisms, spoilage defects, prevention and control of spoilage, and methods for detecting spoilage microorganisms. Microbiological Spoilage of Fresh Whole Fruits and Vegetables Introduction During the period 1970–2004, US per capita consumption of fruits and vegetables increased by 19.9%, to 694.3 pounds per capita per year (ERS, 2007). Fresh fruit and vegetable consumption increased by 25.8 and 32.6%, respectively, and far exceeded the increases observed for processed fruit and vegetable products. If US consump- tion patterns continue in this direction, total per capita consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables would surpass consumption of processed fruits and vegetables within the next decade. This shift toward overall increased produce consumption can be attributed, at least in part, to increased awareness in healthy eating habits as revealed by a broad field of research addressing food consumption and health and promoted by the M. -

Ambient Groundwater Quality of tlie Douglas Basin: An ADEQ 1995-1996 Baseline Study I. Introduction »Ragstaff The Douglas Groundwater Basin (DGB) is located in southeastern Arizona (Figure 1). It is a picturesque broad alluvial valley surrounded by rugged mountain ranges. This factsheet is based on a study conducted in 1995- 1996 by the Arizona Department of Enviroimiental Quality (ADEQ) and Douglas summarizes a comprehensive regional Groundwater groundwater quality report (1). Basin The DGB was chosen for study for the following reasons: • Residents predominantly rely upon groundwater for their water needs. • There is a history of management decrees designed to increase groundwater sustainability (2). • The basin extends into Mexico, making groundwater issues an international concern. II. Background The DGB consists of the southern portion of the Sulphur Springs Valley, a northwest-southeast trending trough that extends through southeastern Arizona into Mexico. Covering 950 square miles, the DGB is roughly 15 miles wide and 35 miles long. The boundaries of the DGB include the Swisshelm (Figure 2), Pedregosa, and Perilla Mountains to the east, the Mule and Dragoon Mountains to the west, and a series of small ridges and buttes to * AguaPrieta the north (Figure 1). The Use ofFlaked Stone Artifacts in Palau) Western Micronesia MICHAEL HASLAM AND lOLIE LISTON INTRODUCTION IN THE PAST DECADE, archaeological research in Palau (Fig. 1) has undergone a rapid acceleration in terms ofboth the quantity ofresearch conducted and the va riety of archaeological questions addressed. As a result, recent modeling of initial occupation (Athens and Ward 2001; Clark 2004; Clark et al. 2006; Fitzpatrick 2003a; Wiclder 2001); cultural chronologies (Clark 2005; Liston 1999; Phear et al. 2003, Wiclder et al. 2007); and settlement patterns (Liston in prep.a; Liston and Tuggle 2006; Masse et al. 2006) have dramatically advanced our understand ing ofPalauan and Micronesian cultural history. The recent recovery and special ized analyses of significant quantities of flaked stone artifacts allow for an inter pretation of Palau's flaked stone tool use in the context provided by these new chronological and settlement models. In this article, we summarize the archaeological analyses of Palau's chipped stone artifacts, review ethnohistorical sources for descriptions and potential use of lithic tools, and present the results of a recent microscopic use-wear and residue analysis of 20 flaked stone artifacts (Table 1; see also Fig. 2). Studies of micro scopic residues found adhering to stone tools typically provide evidence ofartifact function, ranging from a distinction between used and unused artifacts to species level identification of exploited biota, and may include assessments of hafting (e.g., Rots 2003) or non-utilitarian artifact roles. In addition to identifying poten tial tool function, this analysed assemblage, chiefly derived from approximately 2000-year-old inland complexes of earthwork and village sites, can therefore pro vide insight into the cultural transformations between Palau's temporally distinct earthwork and stonework eras.
