We travel widely, in person and through various print and electronic mediums. Our lives are interconnectedeconomically, politically, in social concerns, and in educational endeavorswith people in all parts of the world. Our stateitself is made up of people whose families have come from every part of the world and whose lives reflect a multiplicity of traditions. All of us can be enriched when we interact with people whose heritage is different from our own. During this summer's Go Global: Read! activities,librarians have an extraordi- nary opportunity to help children build a strong foundation ofunderstanding and apprecia- tion of other cultures. Children must be able to read well in order to participate successfully in the global environment. To that end, everything you do to stimulate interest in books and to instill a delight in reading is invaluable. The dynamic summertime programs in your libraries reinforce the pleasures and skills of reading and help children explore other important library resources as well. Best wishes as you set off on this summer's vicarious global journey. As you celebrate books, storytellers, music, puppeteers, magicians, and crafts with children and their families, I hope you will be buoyed by laughter, a sense of wonder, and a joyful spirit of exploration. Around the World in 30 Instruments is a multi-cultural educational concert presenting Traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, England, Medieval & Renaissance Europe, the Americas and India on a variety of musical instruments including hammered & mountain dulcimer, mandolin, mandola, bouzouki, Medieval and Renaissance woodwinds, recorders, tinwhistles, banjo, North Indian Sitar, Medieval Psaltery, the Andean Charango, Irish Bodhran, African Doumbek, Spoons and vocals. Our program lasts 1 to 2 hours and is tailored to fit the audience and specific music educational curriculum where appropriate. We have performed for libraries, schools & museums all around the country and have presented in individual classrooms, full school assemblies, auditoriums and community rooms as well as smaller more intimate settings. During the program we introduce each instrument, talk about its history, introduce musical concepts and follow with a demonstration in the form of a song or an instrumental piece. Our main objective is to create an opportunity to expand people’s understanding of music through direct expe- rience of traditional folk and world music. INDEX WINGED CATS WINGED CATS 1299 There is a tale of a winged predatory cat known as the Cat-a-Mountain in the accounts of Marco Polo (1254- 1324). This beast supposedly had the body of a leopard but a strange skin that stretched out when it hunted, enabling it to fly in the pursuit of its prey. This Cat-a-Mountain is most likely an imagined hybrid — a predatory feline imagined as a large bat or a predatory feline imagined as a large flying squirrel with flaps of skin enabling it to glide. Winged cats of myth and legend were often demonic creatures with “feathered” wings and were liable to swoop down on humans, who were liable to be terrified. Later authors would use Polo’s term to describe a wildcat and by the 17th Century it would have been abbreviated to Catamount and would be being used as a synonym for the American Mountain Lion, Cougar, or Puma. In contrast, the emphasis in this unit is on forms of artistic expression. .Images and music are one component of the culture of surveillance that so infuses our minds and everyday life. The symbolic materials and meanings of culture are social fabrications (though not necessarily social deceptions). They speak to (and may be intended to create or manipulate) needs, aspirations, and fears. Culture communicates meaning and can express (as well as shape) the shared concerns of a given time period and place. Surveillance technology is not simply applied; it is also experienced by agents, subjects, and audiences who define, judge and have feelings about being watched or a watcher. Our ideas and feelings about surveillance are somewhat independent of the technology per se. As with the devil in Spanish literary tradition (image below) the artist can serve to take the lid off of what is hidden, revealing deeper meanings.
