MCA - three strikes and you're out! MalaysiaKini.com April 8, 2013 By K Temoc After the 1969 general election the late Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman, then deputy prime minister, was known to have said, “MCA dan MIC nampaknya tidak mahu hidup dan tidak mahu pula mati”, using a Malay idiom ‘hidup segan, mati tak mahu’ (figuratively ‘neither alive nor dead’) to sneeringly describe a virtually political-defunct Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA). MCA had then been dealt its first strike in the game of politics. Undoubtedly May 1969 was a bad time for the MCA, losing in disastrous measures to a loose coalition of the (original) Gerakan Party, a then very new Democratic Action Party (DAP), the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) (then under the Seenivasagam brothers), and even Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS). But embarrassing as it was for MCA, it wasn't its worst moment yet, because successes and failures are part and parcel of politics, and while depressing, we expected the MCA to pick itself up again. And it did. In 1985, during the acrimonious dispute for the party’s presidential post between Tan Koon Swan and Neo Yee Pan, MCA disgraced itself in no uncertain terms by having the then deputy prime minister, the late Ghafar Baba and a Malay, occupied the MCA’s top position to moderate a settlement between the two Chinese contenders. That incident would not have been disgracefully controversial if the MCA had been a multiracial political party. That it was, and still is, a Chinese race-based party, in having a Malay as its head, no matter how temporary it had been, was certainly a dubious Malaysian first, an utterly shameful indictment on MCA’s inability to represent itself, let alone the Chinese community. -

Financial Report 157—188 Page 2 F A S A n n u a l R e p o r t ( J a n 2 0 1 1—M a r 2 0 1 2 ) SIGNIFICANT EVENTS 1st January 2011—31st March 2012 INTRODUCTION 2011 marked the second year of the implementaon of the FAS Strategic Plan 2010- 2015, and FAS are pleased to inform members, partners and stakeholders, that together we have made progress in the implementaon of this Plan both on and off-the-field. On the field, our Naonal ‘A’ Team met the target of qualifying for the Third Round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers while our Naonal Youth teams performed well in the 23rd Lion City Cup tournament that was held at the Jalan Besar Stadium in June 2011. Off the field, FAS was recognised by FIFA for its various development programmes and iniaves aimed at taking Singapore football to the next level as envisaged by our FAS Strategic Plan 2010-2015. -

1 ‘1 MALAYSIA’ The new initiative put forth by new Prime Minister YAB Dato Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak is called ‘1 Malaysia.’ The new PM has chosen 1 Malaysia as his guide and goal for his premiership, to take this young nation of 27 million to new and greater heights; to forge a new level of nationhood out of the various races that comprise this land. His goal is admirable, yet will not be achieved without greater understanding of what it means to be a nation united, and the sacrifices necessary to achieve it. Despite the last 50 years of rapid development, relative peace and prosperity, Malaysia has miles to go before it can call itself a nation united. There are those that say that the peace that exists is fragile; that all it takes is one major incident to re-ignite the racial riots of 1969. However, it is not fear of such a tragedy that drives the quest for 1 Malaysia. Rather, it is the knowledge that to achieve its goal of being a nation on par with the rest of the global community, Malaysia must rely on its people – all of them – and make full use of its human capital to achieve its potential. Only when this occurs can an achievement like Vision 2020 become a reality. Interdependence has always been Malaysia’s secret to success, however, it has never been truly embraced. Now, with 1 Malaysia, our new Prime Minister has decided that it is time to stop apologizing for who we are as a nation and begin exploiting it as the vehicle to drive the nation to its next phase of success. -

Incorporating a Malaysian Nation Thomas Williamson St. Olaf College What value remains in the concept of economic nationalism? As Michael Heilperin defined it in 1960, economic nationalism referred to "the desire to plan the economic life of the country as independently as possible of the condi- tion of the world economy" (19£0:20). Heilperin's analysis echoes back to old battles between mercantilists and the liberal economists, whose arguments over trade and tariffs Eric Hobsbawm has summarized (1990:24-31). The con- cept of economic nationalism reached a particular florescence after World War I, sufficient to warrant its own volume in publisher H. W. Wilson's 1933 series of "timely topics" called The Reference Shelf (Hodgson 1933). Through the depths of the 1930s depression and the return of substantial tariff barriers, to the import substitution policies followed by many of the postcolonial new na- tions, the considerable literature concerned with "economic nationalism" de- scribes the shifting alignments of economic and political borders (Burnell 1986; Johnson 1967; Simonds and Emeny 1935). Tracing these debates out- lines an international history of the possibilities for social affiliation during the age of nation-states. Economic nationalism takes on a particular importance in a society like Malaysia where it is difficult to locate a more conventional modern national ensemble. Several years ago, Malaysian academic and politician Goh Cheng Teik described his country's population as being one where "deep in our heart of hearts, we are still ethnic. We are Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans, Mela- naus, Kadazans or Bajaus, not Malaysians" (1994:5). As Goh suggests, a major challenge for articulating Malaysian nationalism is the country's prominent ethnic divisions. -

Che Ching Abd Latif Lai ii Abstract The central theme of this thesis is about ‘power’. This thesis is an endeavor to explore how ‘power’ could affect the dynamic of communication and relationships between actors. Power has been chosen as the central theme as a way of building new theory about public relations as proposed by Curtin and Gaither (2005). The same thing can be seen from the sports studies literature, particularly in the relationship between the three main actors in sports; NGB, Media and Sponsors. The investigation of public relations activities in sports is due to the fact, as shown in the sports studies literature, that there was a lack of recognition of the role of public relations in sports. To provide answers for the above aims, this thesis employed the critical, cultural research approach. Bourdieu (1991) conception of capital together with Berger’ (2005) dimension of power relations were used to frame the study. Using a semi-structured interviews, data of this research gathered from respondents based on a purposive sampling technique. The data was analysed using a thematic analysis approach where seven central themes emerged. The findings in this research suggest that power or capital does affect the dynamics of communication and relationship between actors. The implications of this thesis is that it managed to map the dimension of power relations based on the capital possessed by the actors. -

CLASS AND POLITICS IN MALAYSIAN AND SINGAPOREAN NATION BUILDING Muhamad Nadzri Mohamed Noor, M.A. Political Science College of Business, Government and Law Flinders University Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2017 Page Left Deliberately Blank. Abstract This study endeavours to deliver an alternative account of the study of nation-building by examining the subject matter eclectically from diverse standpoints, predominantly that of class in Southeast Asia which is profoundly dominated by ‘cultural’ perspectives. Two states in the region, Malaysia and Singapore, have been selected to comprehend and appreciate the nature of nation-building in these territories. The nation-building processes in both of the countries have not only revolved around the national question pertaining to the dynamic relations between the states and the cultural contents of the racial or ethnic communities in Malaysia and Singapore; it is also surrounded, as this thesis contends, by the question of class - particularly the relations between the new capitalist states’ elites (the rulers) and their masses (the ruled). More distinctively this thesis perceives nation-building as a project by political elites for a variety of purposes, including elite entrenchment, class (re)production and regime perpetuation. The project has more to do with ‘class-(re)building’ and ‘subject- building’ rather than ‘nation-building’. Although this thesis does not eliminate the significance of culture in the nation-building process in both countries; it is explicated that cultures were and are heavily employed to suit the ruling class’s purpose. Hence, the cultural dimension shall be used eclectically with other perspectives. -

We propose that a level of importance is defined for each fixture, which we then maximise. This is in the expectation that the more important a match, the more attractive it will be for supporters. Keywords : Sports Scheduling, match importance, football, gate receipts Introduction Football in Malaysia started in the 1900’s, after being introduced by the British. It has developed ever since and the administration of Malaysian football is now the responsibility of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). There are four main national football competitions in Malaysia; the most prestigious being the Malaysia Super League (MSL), the others being the Premier League, the Malaysia Cup and the FA Cup. The MSL was introduced in 2004, replacing the M-League. It is a privatised league with a private company, MSL Sendirian Berhad (MSLSB), overseeing the promotion and marketing of the MSL. The league began with 8 teams (Kedah, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Pulau Pinang, Sabah, Sarawak, and Selangor PB). It has a relegation system whereby the bottom two teams are replaced by the top two teams from the Premier league. In June 2006, FAM increased the number of teams in the MSL to 14, in order to encourage more competition. The MSL has completed four seasons: season 2004 (14 February, 2004; 7 July, 2004), season 2005 (29 January, 2005; 9 July, 2005), season 2005-2006 (3 December, 2005; 23 May, 2006), and season 2006-2007 (16 December, 2006; 4 August, 2007). -

Mahathir Mohamad's leadership and achievements in driving Malaysia's modernization are well known because the effort has succeeded in benefiting Malaysians so that he can be appointed as the Father of Malaysian Modernization. The effectiveness of his leadership can be assessed based on the achievements that have been successfully achieved by the country through the implementation of actions and policies that he led throughout leading the country. Therefore, this article aims to discuss the elements of Mahathir's leadership by tracing his leadership when implementing actions and policies to modernize Malaysia so that it can achieve a proud achievement in the context of the development of the Malaysian nation. This study uses the method of document analysis by analyzing the text of Mahathir's speech as the main source and applying thematic analysis as an analysis approach. The text of the speech was analyzed thematically to identify the themes that exist and refer to the elements of leadership applied by him throughout the implementation of actions and policies to modernize the country.
