THE ADULT RHYACOPHILIDAE AND LIMNEPHILIDAE (TRICHOPTERA) OF ALBERTA AND EASTERN BRITISH COLUMBIA AND THEIR POST-GLACIAL ORIGIN ANDREW PEEBLES NIMMO Hancock Museum Quaestiones entomologicae New Castle-upon-Tyne, England 7 ; 3-234 1971 Of the Rhyacophilidae 22 species and of the Limnephilidae 91 species are recorded here from the area, making a total of 113 species. Each species is described, and keys are provided for identification of adult specimens to species. Seven species of Limnephilidae are described as new: Imania hector; Apatania alberta; Homophylax baldur; Oligophlebodes zelti; Limnephilus susana; Limnephilus valhalla; and Philocasca thor. The post-glacial origin of this fauna is examined, taking into consideration the possible effects of past and present climatic patterns, extent of glacial ice masses and locations of possible refugia, and locations and drainage patterns of major glacial and post-glacial lakes. Also examined are the 12 range patterns exhibited by the species, and the distributions of each species relative to the other species in its genus or species group. The 12 range patterns form two main groups: one group of six is restricted wholly to the western Cordillera of North America: and the remaining six are more widely distributed, being largely trans continental in extent. Altitudinal distributions are also briefly examined. The conclusions reached are that only 5% of the present fauna is derived postglacially from the Beringian refugium, while 95% is derived from North America south of the southern limit of glacial ice. -

In the study of dispersal limitation, I found that effects of an extraordinarily harsh winter in small to medium-sized streams were strongest in sites located in small streams and far from lake outlets. Species richness and the total abundance of macroinvertebrates and trout returned to pre-disturbance levels after three years. However, some species showed slow recolonization and the proportion of holoaquatic taxa was still reduced after three years. In a second study, I found a positive correlation between site occupancy in stream caddisflies and morphological traits associated with fast and energy-efficient flight, whereas specialized spring caddisflies showed a negative correlation to these traits compared to stream species. This suggested that streams, but not springs, select for strong dispersal ability in caddisflies. In a survey of springs in central Sweden, hydrogeology was found to be a useful predictor of the occurrence of spring specialists. -

Abstract: A total of 79 Trichoptera species (43 genera, 16 families) were found in the Javorníky Mts. (Czech Republic), including two Carpathian species, Chaetopteryx polonica Dziedzielewicz, 1889 and Potamophylax carpathicus (Dziedzielewicz, 1912). Two further species, Rhyacophila mocsaryi Klapálek, 1898 and Rhyacophila philopotamoides McLachlan, 1879, have, until recently, only been found in the Carpathian Mts. In addition, eight species that occur infrequently or only locally in the Czech Republic were found, Synagapetus moselyi (Ulmer, 1938), Hydroptila angulata Mosely, 1922, Wormaldia pulla (McLachlan, 1878), Plectrocnemia brevis McLachlan, 1871, Tinodes unicolor (Pictet, 1834), Hydropsyche fulvipes (Curtis, 1834), Beraeamyia hrabei Mayer, 1937 and Ernodes vicinus (McLachlan, 1879). Several of these species are listed in the Red List of threatened invertebrates of the Czech Republic (one as endangered, one vulnerable and seven near threatened). Keywords: Caddisflies, Invertebrate survey, faunistics, Javorníky Mts., Carpathians, Beskydy PLA, Moravia, Czech Republic Introduction Trichoptera (caddisflies), part of the temporal component of the aquatic fauna of freshwater habitats, are amongst the most species-rich of insect orders. To date, 259 species have been recorded in the Czech Republic, with 253 recently confirmed by Chvojka & Komzák (2017) and Komzák & Kroča (2018a). Sixty-five of these caddisflies are included in the Red List of threatened invertebrate species of the Czech Republic (Chvojka & Komzák 2017). -
