The first half of our course will be on campus, followed by a 9-day trip to Norway.

Did you know that Norwegians are obsessed with crime literature? In this class, we will explore the history of literature about crime in Western culture beginning our studies in 1700s Britain and concluding them in modern-day Norway. You’ll learn to question what the difference is between fact and fiction, crime and “true crime,” all by reading, watching movies, and travelling. Before we go to Norway, we’ll read books in the style of the Nordic Noir (think: Girl with the Tattoo), and explore Norwegian true crime podcasts (such as Death in Ice Valley). Once we’re there, we’ll explore Norway’s complex relationship with crime, including their reactions to WWII, their justice system, and their unique tradition of påskekrime— celebrating by hiking up a mountain, renting a cabin, and reading a crime novel! **Please be advised that this trip includes multiple multi-mile hikes up mountains**

Highlights of the trip include:

▪ Learn about another nation’s justice-system first-hand by touring local government offices ▪ Exploring local art museums (The Viking Ship Museum, The Kon-Tiki Museum, the Resistance Museum) ▪ Hiking in Norway’s beautiful forests in its port city of ▪ Exploring the site of Norway’s most famous unsolved mystery ▪ Staying in a cabin in the peaceful woods of Norway, and experiencing “hygge” firsthand. ▪ Experiencing Norway’s unique food culture that includes, among other things, an obsession with weekly Taco Nights.
