Norwegians Buy More Expensive and Advanced Mobile Phones Than Swedes and Danes Norwegians buy more expensive and advanced mobile phones than Swedes and Danes Norwegians buy more expensive and advanced phones and replace their mobile phones every other year on average, according to a new study done by Synovate on behalf of Telenor. Comparing the use of mobile phones in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, the study shows that Norwegians spend the most money on new phones, an average of NOK 1868, while a Swede spends an equivalent of NOK 1762 and a Dane NOK 1247 when purchasing a new mobile phone. High-end The study also shows that Norwegians buy more advanced mobile phones. As many as 53 percent of Norwegian people's mobile phones were classified as "high-end", compared to a mere 11 and 34 percent in Sweden and Denmark, respectively. ("High-end" phones are in this study defined as mobile phones including functionality such as mobile broadband, a 3.2 megapixel camera and a sufficiently large screen.) "Norwegians love all kinds of new technology and equipment, and mobile phones are a perfect example of this. The advanced mobile phones available now allow for the use of exciting services such as music, e-mail, Internet, TV and e-books via the phone. Telenor is constantly working to simplify the use of these services for our customers," says Svein Henning Kirkeng, Director of Consumer Markets in Telenor Norway. Camera important While the study shows that in all three countries it is important that the phones have cameras, this is most important in Norway. In Denmark it is particularly important that the phone is simple, while Swedes are especially concerned with the music-listening functions. Norwegians and Danes replace their phones more frequently (every 22 months on average) while the Swedes keep theirs for an average of 31 months. The main reasons that Scandinavians acquire new phones are that their old phones are either destroyed or lost. Well-founded decisions However, although Norwegians replace their phones more often than their neighbours, the study shows that their decisions are often better grounded. Approximately 2 out of 3 Norwegians and Danes had decided on a brand/model before buying their new phone, compared to a mere 1 out of 3 Swedes. Norwegians are a bit more traditional than Swedes or Danes when choosing the shape of their mobile phone, and prefer to a much greater extent phones with an open keypad rather than other cover solutions. Here it is the Swedes who are the most innovative. About the study: This study was carried out by Synovate and is based on interviews with 500 respondents per country in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, among people who had recently purchased a new mobile phone. The impending issues that will be discussed at the meeting in Kalmar, Sweden include the future of the Danish and Norwegian crowns after the death of the sole heir to the thrones, Olaf II. Here, two distant relatives to Valdemar IV have a claim to the throne and delegates will need to decide who will succeed to the throne. Design: Food iodine analyses carried out in Norway during the last 10 years were compiled, and iodine intake calculated on the basis of food intake data from nation- wide dietary surveys among children and adults. The food intake of adults was measured by a self-administrated food-frequency questionnaire, which covered habitual diet during the past year. The food intake of children was measured by dietary record during four consecutive days. Setting: Neither household nor industrial iodisation of salt is mandatory in Norway, but some brands of table salt have 5 mg of iodine added per gram of NaCl. In spite of this, the population has been considered iodine-replete for decades, i.e. having an iodine intake well above the Recommended Dietary Allowance of 150 mg day21. This jazz dialect was developed in the decade following the Nazi occupation of Norway, when Norwegians utilized jazz as a subtle tool of resistance to Nazi cultural policies. This dialect was further enriched through the Scandinavian residencies of African American free jazz pioneers Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman, and George Russell, who tutored Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek. Garbarek is credited with codifying the “Nordic sound” in the 1960s and ‘70s through his improvisations on numerous albums released on the ECM label. Throughout this document I will define, describe, and contextualize this sound concept. Today, the Nordic sound is embraced by Norwegian musicians and cultural institutions alike, and has come to form a significant component of modern Norwegian artistic identity. This document explores these dynamics and how they all contribute to a Norwegian jazz scene that continues to grow and flourish, expressing this jazz identity in a world marked by increasing globalization.

But from the 14th to the 19th century Norway was considered by other Europeans to be remote and belonging to the backwaters of Europe. Some daring travel- ers came in the Romantic era, and one of them wrote: The fantastic pillars and arches of fairy folk-lore may still be descried in the deep secluded glens of Thelemarken, undefaced with stucco, not propped by unsightly modern buttress. The harp of popular minstrelsy – though it hangs mouldering and mildewed with infrequency of use, its strings unbraced for want of cunning hands that can tune and strike them as the Scalds of Eld – may still now and then be heard sending forth its simple music. Sometimes this assumes the shape of a soothing lullaby to the sleep- ing babe, or an artless ballad of love-lorn swains, or an arch satire on rustic doings and foibles. The climate, the situation, the character of the scenery agrees with our people better than that of any other of the American States, and none of them appear to me to have a greater or a more beautiful future before them than Minnesota." ^ This vision and prophecy of Fredrika Bremer, the Swedish author, as expressed in St. Paul in 1850, were to become a reality within the next twenty-five years. Even at the time when she stood on Minnesota soil, Norwegian pioneers were crossing the Mississippi River. From a mere handful of 9 officially recorded in 1850, the total number of Norwegians in Minnesota rose to 10,811 in i860; to 49,070 in 1870; and by 1875 to 83,867, or 14.08 per cent of the total population of the state.^ The Norwegians were essentially an agricultural people; consequently in Minnesota they settled in the rural areas, as they had previously done in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Iowa. The rolling woodland and meadowland of southeastern Min­ nesota first attracted them. Then as the tide of settlement advanced, the Big Woods district and the Park Region of north-central and northwestern Minnesota became dotted with farms worked by Norwegian settlers.     Texans One and All The Norwegian Texans Texas Norwegians, arriving and settling as small rural groups, have been few. The 1900 census listed a peak number of 1,356 native Norwegians in the state, a total that declined to 1,000 in 50 years. Today, over 95,000 Texans claim Norwegian descent. Most of the emigration came from rural areas in Norway to rural areas in Texas. The first known individual was Johannes Nordboe, who, in 1841 when he was over 70, settled near Dallas with his family. Johan Reinert Reiersen attempted a colony in Henderson County in 1845. Reiersen, a journalist, editor, and author, had been sponsored in 1843 by a group of prospective emigrants and financiers to tour the United States and report settlement possibilities. Re This Reiersen did—he heard about Texas in New Orleans. Visiting the Republic, he was given a welcome by Sam Houston. Reiersen apparently was convinced; returning to Norway, he so complimented Texas and so insulted the opportunities in Norway that many Norwegians were outraged. Deciding to emigrate, Reiersen left for Elise Waerenskjold (c.1857), a woman far Texas, arriving in 1845. He established beyond her times; schoolteacher; champion the magazine Norge og Amerika before of social causes; briefly editor of Reiersen’s monthly magazine in Norway; then, in leaving, turned it into an emigration Texas, noted writer for Norwegian papers newsletter, and edited it from Texas. on the benefits of immigration to America and the beauties of Norwegian life in Texas. After annexation he brought settlers to Henderson County in the new state, where he was joined also by his two brothers.

    Chapter 3 The Viking Diaspora Introducing the Viking Diaspora The Long, Broad Viking Age – Continuities in Time and Space Archaeologists recognise that Scandinavia is characterised by ‘remarkable patterns of continuity which link the distant past to the present’.1 These patterns can be seen, not just in archaeological evidence, but in many cultural practices particularly associated with the Viking Age. The continuities suggest that some evidence for the Viking Age is best considered in a chronological context broader than even the generous framework of 750-1100. This broader chronological context was outlined in Chapter 1, where it was argued that it should be extended to c. 1500. Because the Viking Age is the period when many Scandinavians left Scandinavia, often permanently, it is also important to widen the geographical range, and consider evidence from all the areas touched by Scandinavian settlement in that period. Just as much of the evidence stretches the chronological boundaries of the Viking Age, so there is also much evidence, whether natural, artefactual or linguistic, that stretches those geographical boundaries, and which can only be considered in the context of the larger Viking world.
