Jacobs , Ranzin Zur Kenntnis der Hornfliegen von Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Diptera, Phaeomyiidae, Sciomyzidae) Zusammenfassung In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden gesicherte Nachweise für zwei Arten der Phaeomyiidae und 43 der Sciomyzidae für Mecklenburg-Vorpommern präsentiert. Die Daten stammen aus der revidierten coll. K e te l (K a s s e b e e r 2000a, 2000b), der Revision der coll. H a in m ü l l e r und eigenen Aufsammlungen. Für beide Arten der Phaeomyiidae gibt es keine Funde nach 1990, bei den Sciomyzidae fehlen solche fur neun Arten. Sechs Spezies werden erstmals für Mecklenburg-Vorpommern genannt. Unberücksichtigt blieben die unrevidierten Angaben von R a d d a t z (1873). Eine Übersicht über die Fauna der Nachbarregionen und eine Zusammenstellung über den zeitlichen Nachweis in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern werden präsentiert. Summary To the knowledge of snail flies of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (Diptera, Phaeomyiidae, Sciomyz idae). - Confirmed records of two species of Phaeomyiidae and 43 species of Sciomyzidae in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern are presented. Records come from the revised coll. K etel (Kassebeer 2000a, 2000b), the revision of the coll. Hainm üller and personal collections. Both species of Phaeomyiidae as well as nine species of Sciomyzidae had not been recorded since 1990. Six species of Sciomyzidae are recorded from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for the first time. The unconfirmed records by R a d d a t z (1873) were not taken into account. Additionally records of the species from neighbouring regions as well as a summary of the times when the species were recorded are presented. 1. Einleitung ritz-Museum Waren. • Insect Egg Size and Shape Evolve with Ecology but Not Developmental Rate Samuel H
ARTICLE https://doi.org/10.1038/s41586-019-1302-4 Insect egg size and shape evolve with ecology but not developmental rate Samuel H. Church1,4*, Seth Donoughe1,3,4, Bruno A. S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). de slakkendodende vlieg ANTICHETA ATRISETA in nederland gevonden (diptera: sciomyzidae) Robert Ketelaar, Elias de Bree & Aat Barendregt Veel slakkendodende vliegen zijn vrij kleine, onopvallende vliegjes die in het veld niet snel worden opgemerkt. Predator to Prey to Poop: Bats as Microbial Hosts and Insectivorous Hunters A Thesis SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Miranda Galey IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE Dr. Ron Moen, Dr. Jessica R. Sieber September 2020 Copyright © Miranda Galey 2020 Abstract Bat fecal samples are a rich source of ecological data for bat biologists, entomologists, and microbiologists. Feces collected from individual bats can be used to profile the gut microbiome using microbial DNA and to understand bat foraging strategies using arthropod DNA. We used eDNA collected from bat fecal samples to better understand bats as predators in the context of their unique gut physiology. We used high through- put sequencing of the COI gene and 16S rRNA gene to determine the diet composition and gut microbiome composition of three bat species in Minnesota: Eptesicus fuscus, Myotis lucifugus and M. septentrionalis. In our analysis of insect prey, we found that E. fuscus consistently foraged for a higher diversity of beetle species compared to other insects. We found that the proportional frequency of tympanate samples from M. septentrionalis and M. lucifugus was similar, while M. septentrionalis consistently preyed more often upon non-flying species. We used the same set of COI sequences to determine presence of pest species, rare species, and insects not previously observed in Minnesota. We were able to combine precise arthropod identification and the for- aging areas of individually sampled bats to observe possible range expansion of some insects. The taxonomic composition of the bat gut microbiome in all three species was found to be consistent with the composition of a mammalian small intestine.

  • Sciomyzidae Recording Scheme
Sciomyzidae Recording Scheme Newsletter 3: September 2003 Introduction This Newsletter gives news of progress with the Sciomyzidae Recording Scheme, includes a summary of currently available identification literature that can be used to determine the British species and announces a call in for available records prior to the production of a new identification guide to the British and Irish fauna. The Sciomyzidae Recording Scheme covers the 68 species of Sciomyzidae (67 species in Chandler, 1998 plus one added since by Cole, 2003) recorded from Britain and Ireland, plus the two species of Pelidnoptera now included in the Phaeomyiidae. The latter (Pelidnoptera fuscipennis and P. nigripennis) were formerly included as a subfamily of the Sciomyzidae, but Griffiths (1972) elevated the group to family status as part of a detailed phylogenetic study of the Diptera Cyclorrhapha using characters of the male genitalia. Additional evidence that supports the family status of the Phaeomyiidae has been obtained by Vala et al. (1990) who discovered that Pelidnoptera nigripennis has larvae that are specialist parasitoids of millipedes, whereas the larvae of all Sciomyzidae that have been reared feed on molluscs. The larva of the Palaearctic Renocera pallida (Fallen, 1820) is confirmed as a predator of small species of bivalve mol luscs of the family Sphaeriidae. To date only the larvae of three Nearctic Renocera species (and larvae of two other species of Scio myzidae in two genera) are known to have the same food preference. The life cycle, biology, larval feeding and behaviour are described for the first time and compared with that of the Nearctic Renocera. The systematic position and biology of Renocera in general are discussed. Descriptions of the egg, second and third larval instars and the puparium of R. pallida are presented, the main features of the egg and larvae are illustrated by scanning electron micrographs. • Elucidating Key Aspects of the Biology of Select Species of Snail-Killing Flies (Diptera: Sciomyzidae) in Oregon
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Fares Alzahrani for the degree of Master of Science in Crop Science on July 15, 2019. Title: Elucidating Key Aspects of the Biology of Select Species of Snail-killing Flies (Diptera: Sciomyzidae) in Oregon. Abstract approved: ______________________________________________________ Rory J. McDonnell Members of the family Sciomyzidae, known as snail-killing or marsh flies, are unique amongst insects in that the vast majority of reared species feed exclusively on mollusks and as a result their biological control potential has been well documented in the scientific literature. However, in North America there is a lack of information on many aspects of the biology and behavior of these flies which has hampered their consideration and use as biological control agents of pest gastropods. This knowledge gap provided the incentive for this thesis which focused on two species, namely Tetanocera obtusifibula and Sepedon fuscipennis. The specific aims were to 1) determine if neonate larvae of T. obtusifibula can follow fresh snail mucus trails; 2) investigate the effect of temperature (10°C, 15°C, 20°C, ~4°C and outdoors) on the survival of unfed neonate T. obtusifibula larvae; and 3) elucidate the flight behavior of an adult sciomyzid fly for the first time using S. fuscipennis as the target species. The trail following bioassays were conducted on filter paper Y mazes, and significantly (P<0.05) more larvae displayed a positive response i.e. moved fully into the trail arm (73.9%) than a non-response i.e. did not trail follow (26.1%). Of those that displayed a positive response, 60% followed the trail to the end and 40% followed the mucus at least to the midpoint.

  • Slakkendodende Vliegen Van Het Genus Anticheta in Nederland

  • Widespread and Persistent Invasions of Terrestrial Habitats Coincident With
Chapman et al. BMC Evolutionary Biology 2012, 12:175 http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2148/12/175 RESEARCH ARTICLE Open Access Widespread and persistent invasions of terrestrial habitats coincident with larval feeding behavior transitions during snail-killing fly evolution (Diptera: Sciomyzidae) Eric G Chapman1, Andrey A Przhiboro2, James D Harwood1, Benjamin A Foote3 and Walter R Hoeh3* Abstract Background: Transitions in habitats and feeding behaviors were fundamental to the diversification of life on Earth. There is ongoing debate regarding the typical directionality of transitions between aquatic and terrestrial habitats and the mechanisms responsible for the preponderance of terrestrial to aquatic transitions. Snail-killing flies (Diptera: Sciomyzidae) represent an excellent model system to study such transitions because their larvae display a range of feeding behaviors, being predators, parasitoids or saprophages of a variety of mollusks in freshwater, shoreline and dry terrestrial habitats. The remarkable genus Tetanocera (Tetanocerini) occupies five larval feeding groups and all of the habitat types mentioned above. This study has four principal objectives: (i) construct a robust estimate of phylogeny for Tetanocera and Tetanocerini, (ii) estimate the evolutionary transitions in larval feeding behaviors and habitats, (iii) test the monophyly of feeding groups and (iv) identify mechanisms underlying sciomyzid habitat and feeding behavior evolution. Results: Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analyses of molecular data provided
