I argue against this interpretation. One can interpret Carneades’ notion of approval as our notion of weak assertion and thereby ascribe to him his own views (a non-dialectical inter- pretation). In Academica Cicero reports the debate about the status of approval as a kind of assent among Carneades’ followers, especially the views of Clitomachus and Philo of Larissa. According to Clitomachus, approving impressions implies acting on them without taking them as true, while according to Philo of Larissa, approval is taking something as true without certainty. In more modern terms, we can say that Philo refers to the notion of weak assertion and Clitomachus to non-assertion. Thus Clitomachus’ reading correlates with a dialectical reading, and Philo’s reading correlates with a non-dialectical reading. Philo’s reading leads to the interpretation of Carneades as a quasi-fallibilist. It is difficult to establish the precise position of the historical Carneades because he was hesitant in his oral teaching. Still, there is some basis in Carneades’ theory for interpreting approval as weak assertion (comprising three degrees of persuasiveness involving rational consideration of what seems to be true). My aim in this essay is thus to argue that a quasi-fallibilist and non-dialectical reading is applicable to the historical Carneades. INTRODUCTION Ancient skepticism—understood as the total suspension of judgment (epoche¯)—presents a serious problem of inconsistency. The linguistic activity of the ancient skeptics seems Downloaded by [89.229.68.111] at 06:22 14 August 2015 to entail a contradiction between explicit speech acts and their implicit presupposi- tions. For, when they assert that “nothing can be known,” they presuppose at the same time that they know something, namely, that nothing can be known and that they have reasons to state this. According to recent scholarship,1 the most effective way of reading ancient skepticism consistently is by using a dialectical interpretation. Skepticism should be a method of refuting other views, that is, a type of discourse with- out assertion. Skeptical activity, according to this interpretation, is practiced through certain reductio ad absurdum arguments. As such, a skeptic takes her interlocutor’s views as premises in her argument and brings them to a contradiction, yet neither the premises nor the conclusions are asserted. Email: [email protected]. © 2015 International Society for the Study of European Ideas 592 RENATA ZIEMINSKA to the dialectical interpretation, was simply a dialectician discussing other views: he accepted no doctrines and did not espouse his own views, not even his view that a wise person should suspend all judgments. The problem of inconsistency would disappear if there were no assertions. However, the global dialectical interpretation of ancient skepticism has been undermined by contemporary theories of language. Speaking and arguing implicitly require certain presuppositions to be taken as true, and so the attitude of non-assertion is possible only locally.2 Skepticism merely as a method of argumentation would have to be part of another, more general philosophical view, such as Empiricism or Pla- tonism, which would provide a conception and description of the world as a basis for formulating it as a method. In the case of Carneades, rejecting the Stoics’ epistemology may be simply a series of reductio ad absurdum arguments, but Carneades’ theory of the persuasive (pithanon) impression is not based on Stoic assumptions. It is rather an attempt to change Stoic assumptions and thereby to create a new notion of approval to better explain everyday beliefs and skeptical attitudes. I claim that the approval of persuasive impressions can be explained as a weak assertion (a quasi-fallibilist inter- pretation). If this is so, there are grounds for ascribing to Carneades some philosophical views as his own beliefs (a non-dialectical interpretation). Epoche¯ would be restricted to strong assertions. Approval, I claim, is the key to understanding Carneades’ skepti- cism. If approval is a weak assertion, Carneades would accept fallible views on behalf of the skeptics and would himself have his own views. However, if approval is a non- assertion, Carneades would not be able to have his own consistent views. Harald Thorsrud offers a fallibilist and non-dialectical interpretation of Carneades’ skepticism.3 I will support this interpretation by focusing on the notion of approval and by commenting on Thorsrud’s notion of fallibilism and explanation of the inco- herence in Cicero’s books. My reasons are not only epistemological (contemporary theories of belief acquisition) but also historical (the content of the Carneadean theory of the persuasive). I will begin with Carneades’ basic arguments for epoche¯. SKEPTICAL ARGUMENTS Downloaded by [89.229.68.111] at 06:22 14 August 2015 Both Cicero and Sextus Empiricus present Carneades as a follower of Arcesilaus who attacked Stoic epistemology, especially the Stoics’ use of a kataleptike impression as a criterion of truth. According to the Stoics, kataleptike, a graspable impression, is “plain and striking, all but grabs us by the hair, and draws us into assent.”4 This impression is considered as self-evident and infallible. Carneades claims that true impressions cannot be discriminated from false ones. He refers to the impression of a bent oar that is straight and of a pigeon’s neck that seems multi-colored,5 the impression that the sun seems smaller than the earth, and that of a large ship that seems minute from a long distance (Acad. 2.82). Cicero also reports something very similar to the Cartesian hypotheses: “There are often <persua- sive> impressions of things that don’t exist at all” (2.47). Examples of such impressions can be found in dreams, abnormal states of mind, or as messages from god through revelations. All of these arguments suggest that all sense impressions could turn out to be false. We can also posit some arguments against the reliability of reason, including Carneades’ Approval as a Weak Assertion: A Non-Dialectical Interpretation of Academic Skepticism 593 the sorites paradox, the liar paradox, and the problem with first principles (2.93–96). According to Carneades, there is no criterion for truth: “not reason, not sense-percep- tion, not appearance, not anything else that there is; for all of these as a group deceive us” (M 7.159). If so, “nothing is apprehensible” (Acad. 2.59). These arguments led the Academics to the precept of epoche¯, in Latin retentio adsensionis, that is, the suspension of judgment: ‘a keeping back of judgment/witholding’. The Stoics’ answer was the charge of apraxia: if we suspend all judgment, we have a problem acting in ordinary life, and thus skepticism leads to complete inactivity. Arcesilaus gave some examples of animal activity without beliefs, but Carneades was interested in identifying the criteria for the rational conduct of life. He found the solu- tion to this problem in his theory of the approval of the persuasive impression. APPROVAL OF PERSUASIVE IMPRESSIONS Our knowledge of Carneades’ skepticism is derived primarily from Cicero’s Academica and Sextus Empiricus’ books. The aim of the Academica was to make Hellenistic phi- losophy available in Latin. Cicero translated the Greek pithanon as the Latin probabile. The Latin probabile denotes that which is subjectively convincing, rather than that which is probable from an objective point of view.

He was motivated in part by an innovative reading of Plato’s dialogues. Where his predecessors found positive doctrines to be systematically developed, he found a dialectical method of arguing and the sceptical view that nothing can be known (akatalêpsia, De Or. 3.67,seeDL4.28, 4.32). He also advanced this conclusion in opposition to the ambitious system of the Stoics, claiming further that the appropriate response to the pervasive uncertainty generated by his method is the suspension of judgement (epochê). Arcesilaus’ dialectical method was practiced without significant modification in the Academy until Carneades, who became head sometime before 155 BCE.1 Carneades both continued and strength- ened Arcesilaus’ method (ND 1.11, Acad. 2.16, see also Acad. 1.46, and Eusebius, Praep. evang. 14.7.15). Sextus marks the change by referring to Plato’s Academy as Old, Arcesilaus’ as Middle, and Carneades’ as New (PH 1.220). Since the main interpretative issues regarding both Arcesilaus and Carneades depend on the concepts of akatalêpsia and epochê,we must try to determine what they mean, how they are related, and what attitude the Academics take towards them – i.e. in what sense, if any, are these their sceptical doctrines? iarcesilaus The view that Arcesilaus derived from Plato’s dialogues might have taken one of two very different forms. Held Connecticut College ontemporary intellectual culture is diffident, perhaps hostile, towards the transcendent aspects of Plato’s metaphysics; instead, preference is given to the openness and inconclusiveness of CSocratic inquiry. But it is not possible to distinguish clearly between the philosophy of Socrates and Plato. This essay argues first that Socrates does more than inquire: he enlarges the search for truth with attention to erotics. It further contends that Plato’s transformative vision of beauty and the divine directs the soul, also through erotics, to truth not accessible to syllogisms alone. We must therefore acknowledge that Plato’s philosophy relies at times on affective and even supra-rational means. Debate over the function of philosophy for Socrates and Plato arose immediately following the latter’s death. The early Academy discussed the mode and intent of reason for Socrates and Plato in terms of whether it was best characterized as skepticism or dogmatism. The issue remains pertinent to the present discussion of how Plato intends mortals both to live a life of reason and strive for the divine which is beyond the normal grasp of reason. What we regard as the traditional “Socratic question” arose in the early nineteenth century from studies of Plato by the Protestant theologian and philosopher, Friedrich Schleiermacher. The phrase stands for the attempt to winnow out an historical figure from the disparate accounts of Socrates found in Plato, Xenophon, and Aristophanes.

    LIVING IN DOUBT: CARNEADES’ PITHANON RECONSIDERED SUZANNE OBDRZALEK I though the interpretation of ancient texts is inevitably di¶cult, Carneades presents what one might call a worst-case scenario. In the first place, he wrote nothing. To complicate matters, Carneades’ views were so obscure that his faithful disciple Clitomachus con- fessed that he could never figure out what Carneades actually be- lieved (Cic. Acad. 2. 139). Showing remarkable fortitude in the face of such an obstacle, Clitomachus, attempting to play Plato to Carneades’ Socrates, reportedly recorded Carneades’ teachings in 400 books (D.L. 4. 67). Not one remains. None the less, Clito- machus’ attempt to make a philosophy of Carneades’ anti-theoreti- cal stance was not a complete failure; Carneades had a tremendous influence on the later Academy as well as the Stoa, and his views (or lack thereof) have been handed down to us by both Sextus Em- piricus and Cicero. These sources are, however, problematic. As a Pyrrhonist, Sextus was critical of the Academy and may have ex- aggerated what he took to be Carneades’ dogmatism. Cicero, on the other hand, a student of Philo, was undoubtedly influenced in his interpretation of Carneades by his teacher’s dogmatic scepti- cism. Carneades is perhaps best known for proposing the pithan»e phantasia (probable impression) as a criterion for life. However, the status of his theory of the pithanon (probable) is completely unclear.1 Was it merely a dialectical move against the Stoic charge of apraxia (inaction)? Unlike most interpretions, the thesis is that the Augustinian inner word does not show the potentialities, but rather the ineffectiveness of ontological hermeneutics. In the first section, it is argued that for the later Augustine the verbum in corde is the consequence of a Word- and Truth- event. In the second section, the author suggests that Gadamer has properly understood the verbum in corde as a matter of faith.

    CHAPTER 2.1 Augustine: Commentary Augustine Aurelius Augustinus Hipponensis (henceforth Augustine) was born in 354 A.D. in the municipium of Thagaste (modern day Souk Ahras, Algeria, close to the border with Tunisia). He died in 430, as the Arian1 Vandals besieged the city of Hippo where he was bishop, marking another stage in the demise of the Roman Empire. Rome had already been sacked in 410 by Alaric the Visigoth, but the slow decline of Roman grandeur took place over a period of about 320 years which culminated in 476 when Romulus Augustus, the last Emperor of the Western Roman Empire, was deposed by Odoacer, a Germanic chieftain. Augustine thus lived at a time which heralded the death knell of the ancient world and the beginnings of mediaeval western European Christendom.2 Augustine‘s great legacy to western civilization is that intellectually he united both worlds in drawing from the ancient thought of Greece and Rome and providing a Christian understanding of the intellectual achievements of the ancients. His new synthesis is a remarkable achievement even today and for those of us, who remain Christians in the West, our debates, agreements and disagreements are still pursued in Augustine‘s shadow.3 1 Arianism was a schismatic sect of Christianity that held the view that the Second Person of the Trinity, Christ, is created and thus does not exist eternally with the Father. 2 See J. Augustine revised the definitions of a ‘people’ and ‘republic’ found in Cicero’s De Republica in light of the impossibility of true justice in a world corrupted by sin. If one returns these definitions ot their original context, and accounts for Cicero’s own political teachings, one finds that Augustine follows Cicero’s republicanism on several key points.

    Introduction The School of Doubt conducts a parallel philological and philosophical exami- nation of Cicero’s Academica, a work on Hellenistic epistemology written in the first half of 45 bce. The treatise has a unique history, insofar as fragments of two different versions are extant: the second of a two-volume first edition, a dialogue known as the Lucullus; and, forty-six paragraphs of the first book of a four-volume second edition, the Academic Books.1 Both versions ostensibly explore a controversy that divided Plato’s Academy at the turn of the first cen- tury bce, pitting Philo of Larissa against his pupil Antiochus of Ascalon. Their dispute was centered on a disagreement over the foundation of knowledge. As the story goes—a story in large part drawn from the pages of the Academica— Antiochus took issue with certain teachings of Philo’s Academy, whose tradi- tion, developed during the school’s Hellenistic period, came to stand for the unknowability of all perceptual and conceptual objects (impressions, or visa) and for withholding assent to any such impression. These two postures, which defined Academic teaching in the third and second centuries bce, were known as akatalêpsia and epochê respectively. While rejecting this dialectical attitude as a betrayal of the Platonic legacy in which he was educated and to which he professed his loyalty, Antiochus leaned closer to the certitude of the Stoics. Specifically, he believed that the Stoa’s theory of “kataleptic impression” (καταληπτική φαντασία) provided a secure foundation for knowledge and a route back to the systematic spir- it of Platonism.

    This article provides a new edition of a passage from Philodemus’ Index Academicorum THE PUPILS OF PHILO (PHerc. 1021, col. XXXIV 6-19), in which pupils of Philo of Larissa are listed. Several OF LARISSA AND new reading allow for a better understanding of the content and rendering of this list, PHILODEMUS’ STAY one of which might even corroborate the hypothesis that Philodemus sojourned in Sicily. IN SICILY (PHERC. 1021, Keywords: Philo of Larissa, Heraclitus of Tyre, Philodemus, Sicily, Historia Academi- COL. XXXIV 6-19) corum Shortly before the end of his Index Academicorum Philodemus informs us about the life of Philo of Larissa (PHerc. 1021, coll. XXXIII f.).1 Notwithstanding KILIAN FLEISCHER its fragmentary state, the passage is highly valuable, since it preserves much otherwise unattested information on Philo and allows us to reconstruct to a certain extent his personal and philosophical development. The passage dealing with Philo ends with a list of pupils that was long thought to include the pupils of Antiochus of Ascalon. Puglia was the first to argue convincingly that the names listed represent pupils of Philo, not of Antiochus.2 In this contribution I will present a new edition of this list (col.
