In nature, orchid seed germination is obligatory following infection by mycorrhizal fungi, which supplies the developing embryo with water, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, causing the seeds to germinate relatively slowly and at a low germination rate. ,e nonsymbiotic germination of orchid seeds found in 1922 is applicable to in vitro propagation. ,e success of seed germination in vitro is influenced by supplementation with organic compounds. Here, we review the scientific literature in terms of the contents and role of organic supplements in promoting seed germination, protocorm development, and seedling growth in orchids. We systematically collected information from scientific literature databases including Scopus, Google Scholar, and ProQuest, as well as published books and conference proceedings. Various organic compounds, i.e., coconut water (CW), peptone (P), banana homogenate (BH), potato homogenate (PH), chitosan (CHT), tomato juice (TJ), and yeast extract (YE), can promote seed germination and growth and development of various orchids. -

AOS Awards to Renanthera By Donna K. Burch Published in March 1999 Awards Quarterly Renanthera is a genus of orchids with branched inflorescences that create a fiery display. They have been described as “the showiest of the monopodials” (Kennedy, 1979). Despite their attractiveness, only eight of the 15 to 17 species described as Renanthera have been recognized by the American Orchid Society, with a total of 21 awards. This represents a much smaller number of awards than could be expected, based on the natural beauty of these species and the number of AOS awards known to have been given to similarly stunning species. This paucity of awards is probably due to the faithful application by AOS judges of the criteria for vandaceous orchids as proposed in the Handbook on Judging and Exhibits, 10th Edition. “The general form of the flower is toward roundness, fullness and flatness. The sepals should be broad and rounded, and should be arranged in an equilateral triangle. The dorsal sepal should be as nearly equal to the lateral sepals as possible. The petals should be broad and rounded, as nearly equal to the dorsal sepal as possible, and should fill the gap between the sepals.” Obviously, the natural form of a Renanthera species – open flowers, more narrow than tall, dorsal sepal much smaller than the lateral sepals – does not conform to the above critera. Also, by emphasizing individual flowers, most point scales give little weight to the combined display of many colorful flowers on an inflorescence, which is the essence of Renenthera. Instead of the Vanda scale, Renanthera should be judged on the General Point scale, which allows 10 points for the consideration of the inflorescence. -

Submission of entry form and design sketch will close on 31 January 2018, 5pm and shortlisted exhibitors will be informed within 2 weeks of the closing date. Vehicle access to the Orchid Plaza must be arranged with show secretariat and is strictly for offloading plants and materials. 3 Competition plants will be officially labelled at registration, and exhibited separately from landscapes. 1 Preface Love of flower is a noble trait peculiar to man. Flower brings fragrance, emotion and beauty to people. That is why they love it, and hope to live beautifully and pure-heartedly like it. At the same time, they express their wish and desire, happiness and hope by means of it, and want to bring their life into full bloom, picturing themselves in it. Kimilsungia, which was named by Sukarno, the first President of the Republic of Indonesia, reflecting the desire of the progressive people of the world, is loved by mankind not only because it is beautiful but also it is symbolic of the greatness of President Kim Il Sung. The editorial board issues Encyclopedia of Kimilsungia in reflection of the unanimous will of the Korean people and the world’s progressive people who are desirous to bloom Kimilsungia more beautifully and propagate it more widely on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of President Kim Il Sung. The book introduces in detail how Kimilsungia came into being in the world, its propagation, Kimilsungia festivals and exhibitions held in Korea and foreign countries every year, events held on the occasion of the anniversary of the naming of the flower, and its biological features and cultivating techniques the Korean botanists and growers have studied and perfected. And edited in the book are the typical literary works depicting Kimilsungia and some of gift plants presented to President Kim Il Sung by foreign countries. In addition, common knowledge of flower is compiled. The editorial board hopes this book will be a help to the flower lovers and people of other countries of the world who are eager to know and grow Kimilsungia.
