ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

2 This show will include landscape competitions in 10 & 15 sq m plots. Entries are invited from all interested persons and parties. The set-up of landscape displays is from 17 – 19 April 2018 (3 days); teardown of landscape displays is on 30 April 2018 (1 day). Please refer to the Orchid Landscape Display competition kit for more information. Submission of entry form and design sketch will close on 31 January 2018, 5pm and shortlisted exhibitors will be informed within 2 weeks of the closing date. Vehicle access to the Orchid Plaza must be arranged with show secretariat and is strictly for offloading plants and materials.

3 Competition plants will be officially labelled at registration, and exhibited separately from landscapes. It is important that exhibitors correctly identify and label/name their plants before registration, to avoid delays.

4 Registration of plants is on Thursday 19 April 2018 (10.00 am – 5.00 pm) at Burkill Hall, National Orchid Garden, Singapore Botanic Gardens. There is no entry fee. Permission for vehicle access to Burkill Hall must be arranged with show secretariat. There is no parking available at Burkill Hall, entry is strictly for unloading of plants for registration.

6 Acceptance of plants is at the discretion of the registration desk and appeals may be made to the Chair of Judges whose decision will be final.

7 For overseas exhibitors, CITES and phytosanitary inspections by AVA and AVA Rules regarding CITES and Phytosanitary provisions are available from the Show Secretariat and will be forwarded to exhibitors on request.

8 The Show will be officially opened on Saturday 21 April 2018, 8.30 am and will remain open to the public until Sunday 29 April 2018, 7.00 pm (last entry at 6pm).

9 Trophy winners will be presented at the Official Opening of the Show.

10 Winners of trophies may retain their trophies for a period of 1 year with an undertaking of safe return, but trophies will be exhibited with the winning plants during the show.

11 The Show Organisers may remove or replace plants or flowers unable to last the full duration of the show. Exhibitors whose plants are removed from the display will be notified.

12 While care will be taken to safeguard the exhibits, exhibits are accepted at the owner’s risk. The Show Committee cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of any exhibit.

13 Plants may be reclaimed on Sunday 29 April 2018, from 7.00 pm evening / after close of show, or on the following day from 8.00 am – 5.00 pm.

COMPETITION RULES

1 Plants registered for competition will be placed in sections for judging by the stewards. Exhibitors may not place plants within the individual competition area. Plants remaining in landscapes will not be judged as competition plants.

2 Exhibitors may enter exhibits in their name, or under a pseudonym. Corporate or organisational names are allowed. Joint entries are not allowed.

3 Exhibitors will be classed as amateur or professional/commercial. An amateur is a hobby grower whose winning will not benefit or be thought to benefit a professional or commercial grower or organisation. Spouses and close family members of professional or commercial growers may not exhibit as amateurs.

4 Judging will be by invited Judges, who will only consider landscapes and registered competitive plants.

5 Challenge cups, ribbons and medals will be awarded. Challenge Cups are awarded in the discretion of Judges to worthy winners. Ribbons are awarded for first second and third placing within classes. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded on the basis of absolute merit, and any number (or none) may be awarded at the discretion of Judges. Time permitting, OSSEA Award Judging will also be carried out.

6 A may receive more than one award.

2 7 The judges may in their discretion withhold any award if exhibited plants are considered unworthy.

8 Orchids with attractive or variegated foliage will be judged as foliage plants, but if in flower, they will also be considered in the respective floral sections.

9 Landscapes should not contain flowering plants other than orchids.

10 The Chair of Judges has the authority to decide the class of entry of a particular plant.

11 To be eligible for the Yuen-Peng McNeice Challenge Cup, specimen plants should be single plants.

12 Where more than one plant is in a pot or other container or mount, only the best will be judged. In the case of Papilionanthe and strongly terete Papilionandas, up to 5 plants (stems) may be included in the pot and will be judged as a group, see the note at the relevant schedule classes.

13 Stakes or wires must be unobtrusive, must not touch any part of any flower, including the pedicel, and must not extend beyond the first flower on any spray, except in the case of and Oncidium Alliance exhibits.

14 Disbudded plants, diseased plants and newly collected jungle plants are not to be exhibited.

15 No exhibit may be removed before the close of the Show without the permission of the Show Manager.

16 Any infringement of these rules may lead to the disqualification of the exhibit or exhibitor concerned. Any protest concerning such infringement or any other matter must be made to the Show Chair, whose decision shall be final.

(i) The President’s Challenge Cup for the Grand Champion plant

(ii) The Orchid Society of South East Asia Championship Cup for the Exhibitor awarded the greatest number of first places in various classes. In the event of a tie, the number of second places will be used, etc.

(iii) H.H. Sultan of Johor’s Perpetual Trophy to the Amateur scoring the highest number of points

(iv) Tan Jiew Hoe Challenge Cup for the Best Landscape

(v) Yuen-Peng McNeice Challenge Cup for the Best Specimen Plant

(vi) Penang Gardening Society Challenge Cup for the Best Species

(vii) John Laycock Challenge Cup for the Best Hybrid

2 Other Challenge Cups to be awarded are listed in the schedule below. All such Challenge Cups are awarded at the discretion of judges only to plants that meet the standard expected for a challenge cup.
