It has an attractive 'pearmain' shape. This is a fairly dry apple - which is perhaps not regarded as a desirable attribute today. In spite of this it is actually a very enjoyable apple, with a rich aromatic flavour which in apple terms is usually described as Although it had 'shelf appeal' for the Victorian housewife, its autumnal colouring is probably too subdued to compete with the bright young things of the modern supermarket shelves. Perhaps this is part of its appeal; it recalls a bygone era where subtlety of flavour was appreciated - a lovely apple to savour in front of an open fire on a cold winter's day. Tree hardy. AERLIE RED FLESH (Hidden Rose, Mountain Rose) California 1930’s 19 20 20 Cook Oct 20 15 An amazing red fleshed apple, discovered in Aerlie, Oregon, which may be the best of all red fleshed varieties and indeed would be an outstandingly delicious apple no matter what color the flesh is. A choice seedling, Aerlie Red Flesh has a beautiful yellow skin with pale whitish dots, but it is inside that it excels. Deep rose red flesh, juicy, crisp, hard, sugary and richly flavored, ripening late (October) and keeping throughout the winter. The late Conrad Gemmer, an astute observer of apples with 500 varieties in his collection, rated Hidden Rose an outstanding variety of top quality. -

MucknellAbbey Factsheet #5 Organic Orchard Following the vision laid out in the Land Use Strategy for Mucknell, we are working towards producing most of our food using organic methods, contributing to income generation by selling produce. In February 2011, we planted 31 fruit trees, to form an organic orchard. We sourced most of the trees from Walcot Organic Nursery, in the Vale of Evesham, and the Banns were a gift. We planted separate stands of apples, pears and plums. Crab apples are very good pollinators of all apples, so were planted on the edge of the stand of apples to encourage pollination. We planted Gladstone on a corner, so that its vigorous rootstock is less likely to interfere with the growth of the other trees. We planted other varieties according to their pollination groups, so that Bs are next to A-Cs, Cs are next to B-Ds, etc. We are planning to plant comfrey under the trees, cutting it and leaving it in situ to rot down around the trees as a natural fertiliser. Fruit varieties in Nantwich Community Orchard May 2021 Text and photographs by Malcolm Reid The orchard was established in 2008 and now consists of forty-five trees, including twenty-six apple varieties, some of which are long-established cultivars, and a few particular to Cheshire. There are also three varieties of pear tree and three different sorts of plum tree. The information on the trees and their fruit was mainly produced using the following sources: A Guide to the Orchard and Kitchen Garden by George Lindley, edited by John Lindley, 1831 The Book of Apples by Joan Morgan and Alison Richards, 1993 The Apple Book by Rosie Sanders, 2010 The National Fruit Collection database http://www.nationalfruitcollection.org.uk/ Details from Elizabeth Falding of the fruit trees propagated by Tony Gentil All the photographs were taken in the community orchard. Apples Arthur W Barnes Culinary (cooking) apple This variety of apple tree was first cultivated in 1902 by NF Barnes and is named after his son, who was killed during the First World War. NF Barnes was the head gardener at the Duke of Westminster’s estate at Eaton Hall, near Chester. The apples are best picked in mid-September when they have turned red. They cook well, making a juicy, lemon coloured purée, with plenty of bite and flavour. Ashmead's Kernel Dessert (eating) apple Although this type of tree was first grown by Dr Ashmead, in Gloucestershire, in about 1700, it was not until the mid-19th century that it became widely planted in England. The fruits are best picked in early October when they have a yellowish-green, brown, and orange-red appearance. -

A MANUAL KEY FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF APPLES BASED ON THE DESCRIPTIONS IN BULTITUDE (1983) Simon Clark of Northern Fruit Group and National Orchard Forum, with assistance from Quentin Cleal (NOF). This key is not definitive and is intended to enable the user to “home in” rapidly on likely varieties which should then be confirmed in one or more of the manuals that contain detailed descriptions e.g. Bunyard, Bultitude , Hogg or Sanders . The varieties in this key comprise Bultitude’s list together with some widely grown cultivars developed since Bultitude produced his book. The page numbers of Bultitude’s descriptions are included. The National Fruit Collection at Brogdale are preparing a list of “recent” varieties not included in Bultitude(1983) but which are likely to be encountered. This list should be available by late August. As soon as I receive it I will let you have copy. I will tabulate the characters of the varieties so that you can easily “slot them in to” the key. -395- CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE STORAGE CONDITIONS FOR SOME OF THE MORE COMMONLY GROWN APPLE CULTIVARS M. Meheriuk Agriculture Canada Research Station Summerland, British Columbia VOH 1Z0 Canada This paper will attempt to outline controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions suitable for some of the predominant apple cultivars. Storage personnel were contacted at apple research centers throughout the world and asked about CA storage conditions employed in their area or country. The information received from these individuals as well as that from the literature was used in establishing storage conditions suitable for specific apple cultivars. Also included on the information sheets are the benefits and disadvantages in altering the concentrations of C02 and 02, the problems encountered when injurious levels of either gas are used, and the commercial use of reduced 02 or increased C02 in the storage atmosphere. Somewhat different from that found in other areas was the use of unscrubbed atmospheres and higher storage temperatures in European storage facilities. An unscrubbed atmosphere is one in which the C02 content is controlled (5-10%) but not the 02 level. Higher C02 levels are known to have an inhibitory effect on softening. The higher storage temperatures may reflect higher energy costs in European countries but it has also been suggested that they permit higher C02 levels in the storage atmosphere. Perhaps another reason for higher storage temperatures is a lower incidence of internal disorders prevalent in many of the European grown apples. A trend towards lower oxygen 02 levels has taken place in the past few years. Many countries now recommend 2% 02 to improve firmness retention and reduce development of physiological disorders. -
Characterization of Malus Genotypes Within the Usda-Pgru Malus Germplasm Collection for Their Potential Use Within the Hard Cider Industry
CHARACTERIZATION OF MALUS GENOTYPES WITHIN THE USDA-PGRU MALUS GERMPLASM COLLECTION FOR THEIR POTENTIAL USE WITHIN THE HARD CIDER INDUSTRY A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Science by Nathan Carey Wojtyna August 2018 © 2018 Nathan Carey Wojtyna ABSTRACT In the United States, hard cider producers lack access to apple genotypes (Malus ×domestica Borkh. and other Malus species) that possess higher concentrations of tannins (polyphenols that taste bitter and/or astringent) and acidity (described as having a sharp taste) than what is typically found in culinary apples. Utilizing the USDA-PGRU Malus germplasm collection, two projects were conducted to address these concerns. The first project characterized fruit quality and juice chemistry for a target population of 308 accessions with the goal of identifying accessions with desirable characteristics for hard cider production. The second project used the same sample population to explore the use of the Ma1 and Q8 genes as potential markers to predict the concentration of titratable acidity of cider apples. An initial target population of 308 accessions were identified and 158 accessions were assessed in 2017 for external and internal fruit characteristics along with juice chemistry. As per the Long Ashton Research Station (LARS) cider apple classification system where apples with tannin concentration (measured with the Löwenthal Permanganate Titration method) greater than 2.0 g×L-1 are classified as bitter, and those with a malic acid concentration greater than 4.5 g×L-1 are classified as sharp, 29% of the 158 accessions would be classified as bittersweet, 13% bittersharp, 28% sweet (neither bitter nor sharp), and 30% sharp. -
