NARRATIVE CHANGE IN PROFESSIONAL WRESTLING: AUDIENCE ADDRESS AND CREATIVE AUTHORITY IN THE ERA OF SMART FANS by CHRISTIAN NORMAN Under the Direction of Nathan Atkinson, PhD ABSTRACT This dissertation project provides a methodological contribution to the field of critical rhetoric by positioning narrative theory as a powerful yet underutilized tool for examining the power dynamic between producer and consumer in a participatory media context. Drawing on theories of author and audience from rhetorical narratology, this study shows how producers of media texts provide rhetorical cues to audiences that allow them to reassert their power in the form of creative authority vis-à-vis consumers. The genre of professional wrestling serves as an ideal text for examining such power dynamics, as WWE has adapted to changing fan participatory behaviors throughout its sixty-year history. Focusing on pivotal moments in which WWE altered its narrative address to its audience in order to reassert its control over the production process, this study demonstrates the utility of narrative theory for understanding how creative authority shows power at work in media texts.

The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.

GREG “THE HAMMER” VALENTINE (Terry Funk) At the age of 19, Greg “The Hammer” Valentine (Jonathan Wisniski) was put on a Calgary-bound plane by his father, esteemed pro wrestler Johnny Valentine. Greg had become fascinated with the world of pro wrestling after traveling around with his father throughout Texas and decided that he didn’t want to return to college. Dad sent his son to Stu Hart. Valentine trained at the Hart Dungeon for a little less than a year and his first match was in Calgary against Angelo Mosca. He was bowled over in under five minutes. Valentine credits Hart with giving him the skills to evolve into a main event caliber wrestler. “I am proud to say to everybody that I came from Stu Hart’s Dungeon because it’s like the boot camp of wrestling. From the frigid cold of Calgary, The Hammer went on to Detroit to be further educated by The Sheik (Ed Farhat). Teaming with Don Fargo as his partner, Greg became Johnny Fargo. Though starting to make a name for himself, Valentine still couldn’t as of yet climb out from under his father’s shadow. There was pressure living up to the Valentine name. “When you’re the son of a famous person they expect a whole lot out of you or they say you’re trying to be like your father. Even if you are as good, they still don’t want to look at it that way.” In the Carolinas, he came into his own, using the Valentine name, and teaming with Ric Flair, who also was mentored by Johnny Valentine.

THE BLACKJACKS (BLACKJACK MULLIGAN & BLACKJACK LANZA) (Stan Hansen) While Blackjack Mulligan loved his time teaming up with Blackjack Lanza, he knew that it was too good to last. “Most tag teams are one weak guy and one strong guy, not two main eventers. Lanza and I were two main eventers, which was hard to keep as a team,” explained Mulligan. “Usually a team is formed by a weakness of one who’s an undercard guy, who’s a great talent that’s never going to make it big, and this other great talent that pulls the team along. But they compliment each other together … We were main eventers so we didn’t really hold the longevity that we should have.” From their initial pairing in 1972 in Indianapolis under the guidance of manager Bobby Heenan to their dissolution in 1975 when Mulligan left to go solo, the Blackjacks were just about the most feared team out there. Jack Lanza was a 6-foot-5, 250-pounder from Albuquerque, New Mexico, who broke into the business in 1962 after being trained by Verne Gagne. A former sociology teacher after attending the University of Minnesota, he started as the babyface “Cowboy” Jack Lanza before being paired with Heenan in Indianapolis a heel. “I hit if off with Blackjack Lanza the first day I met him. It was just one of those things. We made each other laugh and became the best of friends,” wrote Heenan in his first book. Bob Windham, a 6-foot-9, 345-pound ex-Marine who studied education—and football—at West Texas State, lined up with the New York Jets of the AFL until breaking his leg.
