Grin or groan at the screenwriter’s fiction, the truth is much more interesting. Here is the real Halston story, an excerpt from AMERICAN LEGENDS, Michael Edwards’ new book coming out in Fall 2023. Twenty years in research, it traces the evolution of American perfumery thru forty legendary fragrances. By 1972, Halston’s business was grossing nearly $30 million in retail sales. That year, he won his fourth Coty Award and was acclaimed by Women’s Wear Daily as “one of the greats”. The elegance of the new American style was never more evident than at the couture show mounted in November 1973 to raise funds for the restoration of the Palace of Versailles. Five American designers - Bill Blass, Stephen Burrows, Halston, Anne Klein and Oscar de la Renta - joined five French couturiers in presenting their collections. The French used elaborate backdrops and props. The Americans used a bare stage and ten Black models. Their spare elegance put the French to shame. In late 1973, in a move that stunned the fashion industry, Halston sold his name, his company and his design services to David Mahoney of Norton Simon for sixteen million dollars. Norton Simon Inc. was one of the conglomerates stitched together in the 1960s. It owned such diverse interests as Hunt Food, Somerset Liquor, Avis Car Rental, Hartman Luggage and McCall Patterns. “We had also just bought the Max Factor cosmetic company,” said Dan Moriarty, then assistant to chairman of the board David Mahoney.

The exhibit, “New York Fashion Rediscovered 1982-1997,” opened September 5, at 10 Times Square, coinciding with New York Fashion Week. The exhibit brings to life a vivid period in the New York City fashion industry, when designers began creating high- end day and evening wear, as well as power dressing for women in the workforce.     MACHINE LEARNING (ML) FOR TRACKING THE GEO-TEMPORALITY OF A TREND: DOCUMENTING THE FREQUENCY OF THE BASEBALL-TRUCKER HAT ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE RUNWAY A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Rachel Rose Getman May 2019 © 2019 Rachel Rose Getman ABSTRACT This study applied fine-grained Machine Learning (ML) to document the frequency of baseball-trucker hats on social media with images populated from the Matzen et al. (2017) StreetStyle-27k Instagram dataset (2013-2016) and as produced in runway shows for the luxury market with images populated from the Vogue Runway database (2000-2018). The results show a low frequency of baseball-trucker hats on social media from 2013-2016 with little annual fluctuation. The Vogue Runway plots showed that baseball-hats appeared on the runway before 2008 with a slow but steady annual increase from 2008 through 2018 with a spike in 2016 to 2017. The trend is discussed within the context of social, cultural, and economic factors. Although ML requires refinement, its use as a tool to document and analyze increasingly complex trends is promising for scholars. The study shows one implementation of high-level concept recognition to map the geo-temporality of a fashion trend. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Rachel R. Brown, Ph.D. President 2008-2009 Annual Conference: November 5-7, 2009 Nashville, TN 60th Anniversary 1 Introduction and Summation: It has been an honor and a blessing to serve as the President of the Southern Association for College Student Affairs for the 2009 fiscal year. The past twelve months has been a double- edged experience of simultaneously restoring and advancing the Association. Restoration was needed due to adverse conditions stemming from a national economic crisis resulting in a minimal/no-profit year during 2008, while advancement was crucial to remain visible, mend some ineffectiveness, and recruit/retain members. It was my philosophy that the needed restoration and advancement of the Association could be partially addressed by re-building internal morale that had eroded. As such, re-constructing a sense of community within SACSA was my primary objective for 2009. The primary action plan used to accomplish this goal was to demonstrate authentic, caring, and timely communication with the SACSA Executive Council that encouraged honesty, vulnerability, professionalism, respect, and integrity. My desire was for this communication style to flow from the Executive Council members to their respective Committee Chairs, and from the Committee Chairs to respective committee members. An example of this communication design was a weekly (most weeks) newsletter titled ―Friday Facts,‖ in which EC members were informed of Associational issues, decisions to be made, challenges to ―think outside the box,‖ and encourage and publicly celebrate individual efforts and competence.

Strege Copyright by Joycelyn Falsken 2008 ABSTRACT Charles Kleibacker was a fashion designer in New York City from 1960 to 1986, a time when fashion styles reflected the turmoil that occurred in society throughout those years. However, through it all Charles maintained an individual design aesthetic – soft figure-flattering bias dresses with a classic look that could be worn for years. This earned him a devoted clientele of women who purchased his designer ready-to-wear garments at top stores in New York, or were custom fit in his workshop. Because of his preference for and skill with bias, he became known as the Master of the Bias Cut. Trained in French couturier methods of construction, Kleibacker’s garments were all produced with the highest standards in fabric, construction and fit. Bias is known to be the most difficult ‘cut’ to work with when constructing garments. Charles experimented until he figured out how to solve the challenges, and then trained his workers in the exacting techniques required. Having first a career in journalism, Charles’ path to fashion was in “no way normal” and his approach to his business and the industry was not the norm either. Starting small, through much determination and sacrifice, he overcame many obstacles to produce garments engineered for an enduring and graceful artistry.
