  • 7Th GRADE SUMMER READING!
7th GRADE SUMMER READING! June 2020 Dear Incoming 7th Graders, We hope that you have an enjoyable and relaxing summer! At the same time, we don’t want to see you forget all of the skills you have worked so hard on during 6th grade. To keep your skills sharp, we ask you to read two novels this summer to kick off the 7th Grade 20 Book Reading Challenge that we will continue throughout the year. We are encouraging each student to read 20 books throughout this year. Attached is a sheet to record the title and authors of each book that is read. Print out the challenge page and add the two titles and authors of the books you read over the summer. Then bring the challenge page to class with you to turn into your ELA teacher. We encourage students to read across a variety of genres, themes, and authors. The books we read as a class will count toward the 20 books. It is our motto that you can always read more than 20 and should never strive to do less. The book of your choice CANNOT be a book with a film version. Throughout the course of the year we will be exploring the theme of transformation on top of our exploration of story structure and how authors transform traditional structures. This theme will be a reoccurring topic in both our class discussions and writing for each unit we study. We encourage students to utilize the school and public libraries as a means of finding great books to read.

  • 7Th Grade Summer Packet
7th Grade Summer Packet Summer Reading 2017—Grade Seven The Woods Academy Language Arts Social Studies Students going into grade seven are required to read five books this summer. ● Required titles: Mr. Clubbs is requiring you read one book from the list of historical fiction titles attached to this letter. You must select one title from this list ● In addition, each student should read one nonfiction book, one book of poetry, and two free choices for a total of five books. An annotated list of suggested titles will be emailed to you; however, you do not have to select books from this list. These are suggestions only. ● Keep track of the books you read on the attached reading log and give it to Mrs. Piwko on the first day of school. Research informs us that reading as few as four to six books over the summer can prevent a drop in reading skills and that avid readers usually score high on standardized reading tests. Required reading assignment for English language arts: In September, each student will present a book talk on the best book he/she read during the summer. The assignment guidelines are attached to this letter. Required reading assignment for social studies: Over the course of summer, Mr. Clubbs would like students to connect history and today’s news. 1. Students will read chapter one, sections one through five from Discovery Education Techbook, United States History (Prehistory to Reconstruction). a. Each student has access to the techbook online (from this year). b. Students are encouraged to apply learning/note taking strategies (any form practiced in sixth grade) to help remember information and store in their long term memory.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2018-2019 St. John Paul II Catholic School Summer reading is an important part of the educational growth of boys and girls. This reading should include pleasure reading and some materials that challenge students as well. Along with required books per grade level listed below, there are activity sheets that accompany these books. Please look for additional links on our website for Reading and Math activities. Required reading books are to be read at any time during the summer. A brief revisit to these books would be in order just before school starts as teachers use these books as the lesson material for the first few weeks of school. It is highly recommended that students have their own copy of the required books for this purpose. For students who may wish to read more; many other popular books can be found at the HAISLN (Houston Area Independent School Library Network) list as well as others such as Caldecott and Newbery award winners that are available as links on the library resource page of the St. John Paul II Catholic School Website. Encourage your students and take the time to rediscover as a family, favorite childhood books. Additionally, many of the public libraries offer summer activities for all age readers as well. Look on the Library Resources Link on the Library Page for more ideas, activities, tips and hints and much more. Enjoy this valuable time reading with your child. Read every day! Happy Reading ~ Ms. Lamb Students entering Pre-K in Fall of 2018 ~ Required read or read along with your child books The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.
