June 27, 2011 3 Accreditation and Approvals Accreditation Daymar College is a senior college accredited by the Accrediting Counsel for Independent Colleges and Schools to award applicable specific credential levels from among certificates, diplomas, associate’s degrees, and bachelor’s degrees. The Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and schools is listed as a nationally recognized accrediting agency by the United States Department of Education and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Daymar College - Owensboro, is currently seeking accreditation from the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLN-AC), and official notification of ―Candidacy Status‖ will be announced upon receipt. Full approval by NLN-AC may not be granted for up to two years from the time of application for candidacy status. There is no guarantee from either NLN-AC or Daymar College that accreditation status will be achieved. However, all necessary steps will be taken by Daymar College to obtain approval. Upon completion of the candidacy process, those students graduating be recognized as graduates of an NLN-AC accredited school. Approvals Daymar College is licensed by the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education. Daymar College - Owensboro, Daymar College - Bellevue, Daymar College - Louisville East, Daymar College - Louisville South, and Daymar College - Madisonville are regulated by the Indiana Commission on Proprietary Education, 302 West Washington Street, Room E201, Indianapolis, Indiana 46204. Daymar College - Bellevue is approved by the State Board of Career Colleges and Schools of the State of Ohio, registration number, 05-01-1745T. The Paralegal Studies Program at Daymar College - Owensboro is approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). 4 Daymar College Some of the programs offered by Daymar College, located in Kentucky, have been approved by the Kentucky Approving Agency for Veterans Education for the enrollment of persons eligible to receive VA educational benefits. All campuses of Daymar College have been designated by the United States Department of Education as eligible to participate in Title IV, Part A Postsecondary Education Federal Assistance Programs under the Higher Education Act of 1965, as Amended (HEA). History of Daymar College Daymar College was founded in 1963 as Owensboro Business College and was housed at 1126 Triplett Street, Owensboro, KY, offering courses in general business. In 1965 a day program was added with diplomas being awarded in the areas of secretarial science and accounting. The College was then moved to 1300 East Ninth Street, Owensboro, KY, and began awarding additional diplomas in data processing, business administration, and clerical areas. In 1970, the College was nationally accredited as a business college by the Accrediting Commission of the Association of Independent Colleges and Schools and was approved by the United States Department of Education to award financial aid to students. In 1972 the College was approved by the Indiana Commission on Proprietary Education. In 1973 the College began offering all programs on a credit hour basis and was authorized by the Kentucky State Board for Proprietary Education to award Associate Degrees. By 1974 the College had gained national recognition and many of its innovations and programs were used in colleges throughout the country. In 1973 the College was the first private career college to be awarded a Special Services project by the United States Office of Education. The College leased the Tower Motor Inn at 1926 Triplett Street, Owensboro, KY, in 1978 and was housed in that facility through September 1982. In October 1982 the College moved to the remodeled and renovated V.E. Anderson Manufacturing Building located at 1515 East Eighteenth Street, Owensboro, KY. In 1980 June 27, 2011 5 the College was accredited as a junior college of business by the Association of Independent Colleges and Schools. In 1991 the Association of Independent College and Schools merged with the National Association of Trade and Technical Schools forming a new association—The Career College Association. Daymar College is a member of the Career College Association. Daymar College is now accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS). In June 1999, the College moved to a freestanding, one-story structure built specifically for the College. Located on 6.4 acres of land at 3361 Buckland Square in the Heritage Park Development in Owensboro, Kentucky, the facility contains approximately 17,000 square feet of space. The College is easily accessible from the U.S. Highway 60 By-Pass, one of Owensboro’s major thoroughfares. An easily recognizable landmark, the College has a clock tower and large, burgundy, metal roof, readily visible from the By-Pass. Many in Owensboro and Kentucky played important parts in its development. Although it is not possible to name all of them here, their contributions should be acknowledged. The list begins with the members of the Owensboro Citizens Committee on Education, and particularly the people who presided as chairs during the study period: Rodney Berry, Forrest Roberts, and Marianne Smith Edge. Their advice and suggestions were consistently helpful. The Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer distributed the community resident questionnaire as an insert in the paper and provided a cover story describing the study and the importance of completing and returning the questionnaire. The paper’s invaluable assistance was instrumental both to getting the questionnaire out in a timely manner and to the numerous responses that were sent back to this office – nearly 700 completed and usable questionnaires. Declarations that the recession is over provide little comfort when economic indicators paint an ambiguous national portrait and the imminent possibility of defaulting on the national debt sparks only interminable debate devoid of solutions. In such a turbid atmosphere, local economic gains and successes garner less attention and very often remain ignored.
