The Owensboro Softball Complex The Owensboro Softball Complex is located in Jack C. Fisher Park at 3900 West Fifth Street Road. This first-class complex provides four lighted softball fields, a field house with concessions, and announcer's area. It has been the host of many local, state, regional and national tournaments.
Panther Creek Park Panther Creek Park, 5160 Wayne Bridge Road, contains six baseball/ softball diamonds with lighted fields and scoreboards. Concession stands are located at the park. The Owensboro Sportscenter, located at 1215 Hickman Avenue, is a multi-purpose 5,000 seat arena. The Sportscenter hosts concerts, Yellow Creek Park sporting events, trade shows, conventions, meetings, and receptions. You have not experienced Owensboro until you try the world famous barbecue!
Barbecued mutton is Owensboro, Daviess County’s claim to fame with more being consumed per person in this county than any other place in the world. As far back as the 1830’s, churches in Daviess County were having barbecues and because farmers raised a lot of sheep, mutton was the primary meat to be cooked. This rich and zesty meat is only available in a few locations and Owensboro is the best known. It is still cooked in the traditional manner, with large pieces of mutton (adult sheep) cooked for 12 hours over hickory fires while being mopped several times during the process with a mixture of water, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, lemon juice, salt and pepper and maybe a few secret ingredients! What about burgoo? Burgoo is a spicy stew, similar to Irish or Mulligan stew, often served with cornbread or corn muffins. Owensboro barbecue restaurants use a specific meat in their recipes, usually pork or mutton, which, along with the spices used, creates a distinct flavor unique to each restaurant. While burgoo in Owensboro is generally associated with special events, such as church picnics and BBQ competitions, it is sold year-round in locally owned BBQ restaurants.
