The compilation of the All-America roster was supervised by a panel of analysts working in large part with the historical records contained in the files of the Dr. Baker Football Information Service. The roster consists of only those players who were first-team selections on one or more of the All-America teams that were selected for the national audience and received nationwide circulation. Not included are the thousands of players who received mention on All-America second or third teams, nor the numerous others who were selected by newspapers or agencies with circulations that were not primarily national and with viewpoints, therefore, that were not normally nationwide in scope. The traditional statistics which are recorded tell us only about the contribution of individual players (eg. points scored, rebounds, etc). However, there are subtle aspects of play such as defensive help, setting screens and verbal communication that are known to be important but are not routinely recorded. The model we propose is based on the Bayesian social relations model. The results help us identify aspects of player performance. Data from the NBA 2004 and NBA 2005 finals are used throughout the project to illustrate our approach.
