NEW DISTRICT - NEW CONGRESSMAN? Newly-drawn Congressional District # 47 includes virtually all of Long Beach and a significant FRANK REINMILLER piece of northwest Orange County, and thus finds two local political luminaries battling it out in a hotly contested race. Current Long Beach Councilman Gary DeLong (3rd District), faces State Senator Alan Lowenthal (former Councilman, 2nd District) in November, as a result of being the GARY LAZENBY top two candidates in a crowded field in the June primary. (Lowenthal finished first, with DeLong 5 percent behind). Your Long Beach Airport Association has endorsed DeLong; he has been a ARTHUR DANCHUK consistent friend of business, and has been pro-airport in his six years on the council. This will be a (thank you for the extra hard-fought race and Gary can use your support. You can find his campaign at donation!) www.garydelong.com. NEW COUNCILMEMBER IN 8th DISTRICT DON TEMPLE DON TEMPLE STORAGE Labor representative Al Austin has been sworn in as Long Beach's newest councilmember (July 17), replacing retiring Councilwoman Rae Gabelich. Also sworn in at last Tuesday’s meeting was Patrick O’Donnell, who beat the odds, with a write-in effort in the April primary, and went on to JOHN MITCHELL win in the June runoff, to represent the 4th district for an unprecedented third term. He becomes the first councilmember to win a third term (only allowed by write-in) since Long Beach voters BRUCE FITZPATRICK approved term limits two decades ago. Also taking the oath again were Suja Lowenthal (2nd District), who easily defeated two opponents to win re-election, and Dee Andrews (6th District), who was unopposed! LONG BEACH AIRPORT AVIATION NEWS ASSOCIATION UPDATE ON LGB RUNWAYS 16L/R: NEW AIRPORT DIAGRAM PRESIDENT CANDY ROBINSON The current Airport Facility/Directory Southwest (valid May 31 to 26 July SECRETARY KEVIN MCACHREN 2012) shows 645 feet missing from Runway 16L. Gleaned at the June Long Beach TREASURER JOHN MURRILL Airport Advisory Commission: there has been an on-going discrepancy between the FAA’s version and LGB’s version of the airport layout plan. It was recently resolved. BOARD OF DIRECTORS Make sure to update your flight case with the most recent airport diagram! ERIC HILL 562-997-0700 [email protected] WHAT’S UP? LOS ANGELES TERMINAL AREA CHART CHANGES PAUL LAGREEK 714-840-1276 [email protected] The new edition of the Los Angeles Terminal Area Chart became effective June 28, KEVIN MCACHREN 562-429-8062 2012. Some of the changes we found: JOHN MURRILL 562-981-2900 [email protected] 1. On the chart legend: GLENN RAY 562-427-3338 A mysterious phrase has been added: “OBJECTIONABLE—Airport may adversely [email protected] affect airspace use.” Doesn’t make any sense at this time. CANDY ROBINSON 562-290-0321 2. On the navigation side: [email protected] DON THOMPSON 562-500-0173 Several areas have been changed in an attempt to correct the delineation of the LAX [email protected] Class D airspace. (The December 2011 chart added airspace north and south of CHARLIE ZABINSKI 714-383-7707 LAX for further separation from Class E operations below the Class B airspace; [email protected] using Class D was the quickest way to add additional airspace). Also, HHR Class D PEGGY ZAUN 562-490-6206 and E airspace has been revised. The result enclosed Compton with Class E [email protected] airspace to the surface. With the Class D and E changes, the dashed lines to depict the airspace boundaries have become nearly impossible to “connect the dots”. Near DIRECTOR EMERITUS TOA, there is a triangle of airspace that indicates two ceilings of Class D, up to and not including both 2400 feet AND 2500 feet. It is impossible to determine if the BARBARA LONDON 562-519-2834 dual ceilings are for TOA, HHR or LAX Class D airspace. Even using the less [email protected] cluttered flyways side of the TAC provided no help —both sets of dotted lines point to the same triangle. How can the same type of airspace have a multiple ceilings? Get a higher education, learn to fly! AWOS-3 frequencies have been added for Whiteman and Compton Airports. Three obstructions were found on the new chart: (1) Soledad Pass, (2) near La LONG LONG Habra Flight Training area, and (3) between Redlands (REI) and March ARB (RIV). BEACH BEACH The symbol for LAX VORTAC that had mysteriously disappeared from Edition 64 FLYING FLIGHT has been returned. CLUB ACADEMY A wildlife sanctuary in southwest corner of the TAC has (1) added a website reference for airspace information, (2) added an altitude warning for sanctuary over 25L flight, and (3) added the symbol for a national park/wildlife refuse. FLIGHT INSTRUCTION AIRCRAFT RENTAL Perris Valley (L65) CTAF has been changed to 122.775. PART 141 APPROVED AIRCRAFT CHARTER On the flyways side of the chart: all changes noted for the navigation side of the chart, PILOT SUPPLIES AND SNACKS if applicable, were incorporated. AVIONICS SALES AND SERVICE LBCR998F GIFT CERTIFICATES Take additional care when operating around the new Class D and E areas until we SCENIC AND DEMO FLIGHTS have more information about the boundaries. Also, in a trend to simplify the names of APPROVED BY DEPT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS visual checkpoints, the TAC now has two “shopping centers” (one each near BUR and (562) 290-0321 * FAX (562) 290-0421 CNO) and two “amusement parks” (Knott’s Berry Farm and Magic Mountain). Angel Flight West: Mission Possible! By Colleen Kendall, AFW Volunteer When I asked Mary Compton about her most meaningful Angel Flight West (AFW) mission, she quickly replied, “Oh! That would have to be Carol K. She was diagnosed with lung cancer; then in February 2008, learned she had six-months to live.” However, Carol was not ready to give up without a fight. She found Dr. Frederic Kass who enrolled her in a clinical trial at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara. Carol lives in Folsom, northeast of Sacramento. She had to find a way to travel from Sacramento Mather (MHR) to Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara) and back for treatment. Husband Jim had lost his job, and Carol receives Social Security Disability; so with limited income and the hope of treatment over 250 miles away, they needed a miracle. A social worker provided just that when she introduced Carol and Jim to AFW and since then the couple has flown between MHR and SBA every four weeks.
