  • JAZZ WORTH READING: “THE BOSTON JAZZ CHRONICLES: FACES, PLACES and NIGHTLIFE 1937-1962″ Posted on February 20, 2014
From Michael Steinman’s blog JAZZ LIVES MAY YOUR HAPPINESS INCREASE. Jazz: where "lives" is both noun and verb JAZZ WORTH READING: “THE BOSTON JAZZ CHRONICLES: FACES, PLACES AND NIGHTLIFE 1937-1962″ Posted on February 20, 2014 Some of my readers will already know about Richard Vacca’s superb book, published in 2012 by Troy Street Publishing. I first encountered his work in Tom Hustad’s splendid book on Ruby Braff, BORN TO PLAY. Vacca’s book is even better than I could have expected. Much of the literature about jazz, although not all, retells known stories, often with an ideological slant or a “new” interpretation. Thus it’s often difficult to find a book that presents new information in a balanced way. BOSTON JAZZ CHRONICLES is a model of what can be done. And you don’t have to be particularly interested in Boston, or, for that matter, jazz, to admire its many virtues. Vacca writes that the book grew out of his early idea of a walking tour of Boston jazz spots, but as he found out that this landscape had been obliterated (as has happened in New York City), he decided to write a history of the scene, choosing starting and ending points that made the book manageable. The book has much to offer several different audiences: a jazz- lover who wants to know the Boston history / anecdotal biography / reportage / topography of those years; someone with local pride in the recent past of his home city; someone who wishes to trace the paths of his favorite — and some obscure — jazz heroes and heroines.

The rhythm section was playing with a straight-ahead yet contemporary feel, while Sanders was seamlessly blending the avant-garde or free aesthetic and main- stream straight-ahead jazz, as well as the blues and R&B influences from early in his career.2 This band—and this period of Sanders’s career—have been largely neglected and Sanders himself has generally been poorly represented in the media.3 Sanders, as is true for many, many musicians, suffers from the fact that in critical discourses jazz styles often remain conceptualized as fitting into pre-conceived cat- egories such as straight-ahead, mainstream, and avant-garde or free jazz.

  • The Recordings
Appendix: The Recordings These are the URLs of the original locations where I found the recordings used in this book. Those without a URL came from a cassette tape, LP or CD in my personal collection, or from now-defunct YouTube or Grooveshark web pages. I had many of the other recordings in my collection already, but searched for online sources to allow the reader to hear what I heard when writing the book. Naturally, these posted “videos” will disappear over time, although most of them then re- appear six months or a year later with a new URL. If you can’t find an alternate location, send me an e-mail and let me know. In the meantime, I have provided low-level mp3 files of the tracks that are not available or that I have modified in pitch or speed in private listening vaults where they can be heard. This way, the entire book can be verified by listening to the same re- cordings and works that I heard. For locations of these private sound vaults, please e-mail me and I will send you the links. They are not to be shared or downloaded, and the selections therein are only identified by their numbers from the complete list given below. Chapter I: 0001. • Pressure of Trying to Make Each Note and Phrase a Little Jewel
(Sportiello, Metz and Parrott) had the crowd buzzing during intermission and rising en masse for a standing ovation... KEN FRANCKLING/JAZZTIMES Together, they are the most elegant trio around! DICK HYMAN ...pure straight ahead heaven... doesn’t miss a beat or drop a false note... CHRIS SPECTOR, MIDWEST RECORD ANY DAY IS A GOOD DAY FOR SOME SONGS Many recording sessions are tense affairs, because the musicians feel the pressure of trying to make each note and phrase a little jewel. But at a Rossano Sportiello session, his delight in being allowed to make music, his easy assurance that there is no need to rush, makes everyone feel relaxed and joyous. No one could feel tense when his directions to the other musicians are so gentle, “You watch me. Maybe something nice will come out.” During playbacks, the control room was atypically quiet, because everyone (including visitors Harry Allen and Rebecca Kilgore) was busy listening and smiling. This trio is a friendly supportive community. Each voice is equal yet the three players come together from the first notes in a lovely synergy. Hear Ed Metz’s beautiful touch, his light-hearted rhythms that recall Jake Hanna so well: feathery brushwork or explosive accents. (Ed provides wonderfully apt incidental percus- sion, too.) Hear Nicki Parrott’s swinging pulse, the rich sonorities of her bass. Dur- ing this session, I would have sworn I heard a rhythm guitar because her sound is so ripe and full. As a singer, Nicki is one with the song. Her subtle, understated delivery is always convincing, whether she’s being perky or rueful.

  • PRESERVATION JAZZ SOCIETY a Short History
PRESERVATION JAZZ SOCIETY ---1989 to Present The Preservation Jazz Society or PJS for short was founded by Brecon Jazz Festival favourites the Adamant New Orleans Marching Band and about a dozen of their friends in 1989. The object to promote Traditional New Orleans Jazz music in a six piece band ensemble in a club atmosphere. Starting at the Bottleneck Bar at the Philharmonic Pub in Cardiff with little money and after a quiet start we built up a solid audience with live traditional jazz bands each Tuesday evening. Journalist and Novelist Eric Reynolds was given the job of publicity and booking bands up to three months in advance to create a programme structure that be could be publicised well before the gigs took place . We started a newsletter ‘The Footappers News’ that’s still published today. One of the revenue raising problems at the time was that we could not charge an entrance fee to the music room at the pub, the only income available was raffle tickets plus a donation from the Pub. Thanks to Dai Richards, a Cardiff City Council Counsellor at the time with a brief for promoting the Arts and an Artist himself, the PJS were given a helpful grant each year for as long a Dia had a say in things or at least until the Council changed-which it did after several years. None the less without Dia’s help things would been a difficult. The grant put the society on a sound financial footing and enabled a great range of bands from further afield to play at our gigs.
