FROM THE PASTOR My Dear Parishioners, Happy Pentecost! Alleluia, the Holy Spirit has come! So too has June, the month of graduations and movement as we move out of school and into summertime! The transitions at this time of year match well the Great Transition we find in the Early Church especially on this Feast of Pen- tecost. For the Descent of the Holy Spirit empowers and moves the Church outward in ways of loving service to others. It is the birthday and sending forth of the Church with the Good News. For this reason, it’s not unusual on Pentecost for parish communities like ours to hold Ministry Fairs. In fact, it’s quite common. Ministry Fairs are opportunities to show forth the various gifts, leaders and volunteers of a parish. They are a great way of proclaiming/advertising the Good News and getting “new blood”, i.e. more volunteers in- volved in a parish. While I respect such initiatives and see their value, I’d like to take this moment on Pentecost to suggest something even more valuable and to share with you my growing conviction about our parish and the Call of Jesus. Having been with you for two years now, I am convinced that our parish community of St. Patrick has no need of more volunteers. And so, I won’t ask for or seek any. I find it interesting that in the whole of His life, Jesus never asked for a volunteer, so why should I? Rather, Jesus sought Missionaries: Men and women of great love whom He sent out. Men and women who used their unique gifts, time, talents, treasure and personalities for the good of others. Men and women who were willing to grow, to put all things aside and to live their lives for Him. That’s what Jesus looked for, that’s what he called forth, that’s what he invited. And so too do I. This month, as I begin my third year as Pastor, I am on the hunt for Missionary Disciples. And they are a lot dif- ferent than a volunteer. They are men and women who are aware of their place, their role and their vocation in the Body of Christ. Men and women filled with the Holy Spirit of God. Men and women who heed the call. We are such people and Pentecost is the time for us to realize more fully, accept more generously and move more quickly in that Way of the Spirit. Please pray about this word and in the coming months I may even have a ministry fair to seek such people out. But for now, on this Feast of Pentecost, ask yourself...What does this mean for me, Lord? What does it mean for me to be your missionary disciple? And then, together as a community, we can heed that call! Peace, Fr. Rogers 236
