We work tirelessly to keep this event free and ticketless so that there are no walls of class coming between art and its ability to touch all people. We are proud of all of the talented creative visionaries and scholars who have given their time and unique insight into the world to all of us enjoying this platform in Bangladesh. ‘Ever-widening in thought and action’, as Tagore put it, DAS changes and evolves from edition to edition and we look forward to watching DAS deepen in meaning locally and internationally in the years to come. Rajeeb and I are proud to have founded DAS which is primarily an event for the people of Bangladesh, and we are grateful to the hard work and sacrifices that people made before us to give us the freedom to envision such an initiative in our home country. Our country is celebrating the 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman who led Bangladesh to freedom and founded the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy which has hosted DAS since its inception, and Centre for Research and Information (CRI), ICT Division, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs are presenting a new look into his journey in its lounge which we hope will inspire other people to take action to make the world a better place. It has been my pleasure to chair the organising committee of Dhaka It has been a great honour and privilege to have been working alongside Art Summit since its inception, and to see it grow and become more the Samdani Art Foundation since hosting the first DAS in 2012, watching impactful from edition to edition.     Title: Dretzka, Jerome Papers Reference Code: Mss-2302 Inclusive Dates: 1909-1963 Quantity: 10 cu. ft. Location: NE, Sh. 048-051 OS LG “D” Abstract: Jerome C Dretzka (1881-1963) served on the Milwaukee County Parks Commission from 1920-1963. During that tenure, from 1926-1952, he served as the Executive Secretary of the Commission and expanded the area of Milwaukee parks considerably. He also served as an officer for the American Institute of Park Executives. He retired in 1952. He was born on December 5, 1881 in Pozen, Poland. His family moved to America when he was five years old and they settled on the south side of Milwaukee. In 1893, his family moved to Cudahy where he continued to reside until his death. He served as the city of Cudahy’s city clerk from 1912-1916. He left this position to manage the real estate holdings of Patrick Cudahy. This knowledge served him well during his time on the Commission and during his tenure the Commission went from owning 680 acres to over 7,000 acres of parks. He also served on the boards of the Milwaukee County Historical Society, New Zoo Conference Committee, Wisconsin Park and Recreation Society, as well as many others. Scope and Content: The bulk of the collection consists of material pertaining to Milwaukee County Park Commission and some of the material pertains to his participation in the American Institute of Park Executives (AIPE).In the form of correspondence, newspaper clippings, meeting minutes and official papers from the Commission. This collection also includes information about various projects that he was involved with including the zoo, Mitchell Conservatory, the Braves, and the Milwaukee County Stadium.

As a place for advancing the understanding of the lived environment, the Bengal Institute presents a platform for developing ideas to improve the qualities of architecture, landscapes, cities and settlements in Bangladesh. In generating a critical, creative and humanistic dialogue, the Institute applies an integrated approach to the study and rearrangement of the environment. Innovative transdisciplinary programs of the Institute integrate architectural and design research, investigation of cities and settlements, and the study of larger regions and landscapes. ACADEMIC PROGRAM With the intention of creating an inter-disciplinary, postgraduate educational development in architecture, urban design, landscape design, and settlement studies in Bangladesh, Bengal Institute's Academic Program was launched in August, 2015. Structured around seminars, lecture series, and workshop styled design studios, the Academic Program offers monthly sessions in Spring and Fall Sequences that are open to anyone with an interest in the study and rearrangement of the environment. Faculty with national and international repute conducts the activities of the program. RESEARCH AND DESIGN PROGRAM The Research and Design Program is dedicated to the study, design and planning of cities, settlements and landscapes. With the aim of facilitating the planned physical future of Bangladesh along with socio-economic development, the Program operates at various scales, from the regional to the small neighborhood. The research and design focus of the program includes regional contexts, small towns, public space, public transport, high density livability, hydrological dynamics, landscape forms and settlement patterns.

    Defining the Frontiers of Identity: Balancing Language and Religion in Bangladesh Smruti S Pattanaik The question of identity is a social issue but behind its construction there are potent political forces at work. These forces seek to conceptualize and articulate socio- political grievances of a ‘community’ and convert these grievances into a political tool, which forms the basis of a separate nation state. Therefore, the issue of identity is the most volatile subject in multi-ethnic states. In a multicultural and plural state, the state- hegemonisation and definition of national identity inevitably creates fissiparous tendencies especially when the nature of the state often fails to take diversity into account. In the context of the creation of Pakistan and given the history of partition, the state hegemony in crafting a ‘nation’ was an effort to translate the ideological inspiration behind the state formation. At the same time, the Hindu dominated Congress opposition created a sort of insecurity regarding the viability of the nation-state. Therefore, the state, in its over-zealous attempt to promote and protect an Islamic identity the basis on which the state was founded, played the role of an ultimate arbitrator of the identity question. The problem with such an overarching authority of the state that defined the existence of ‘self’ within the geographical parameter persisted in conceiving a political identity that defined the citizenship and gave him an identity and a sense of belongingness to the territory. In the process, the state advanced “Islam” as the core of the national identity. In this context, Urdu became the defining factor of being a ‘Muslim’ in the new state of Pakistan.
