ALGECIRAS EN LA ENCRUCIJADA DE LA BATALLA DEL ESTRECHO (SIGLOS XIII Y XIV) Por MANUEL GONZÁLEZ JIMÉNEZ En el presente año se conmemoran dos importantes cente- narios: el de la batalla de las Navas de Tolosa (1212) y el inicio del reinado de Alfonso XI, bisnieto de Alfonso X el Sabio e hijo de Fernando IV “el Emplazado”. Alfonso XI accedió al trono en 1312, apenas con dos años de edad. Tras una larga y agitada minoría, en 1325 se anticiparía su mayoría de edad. Tenía apenas catorce años. A pesar de ello, protagonizó uno de los reinados más brillantes de la Baja Edad Media. Supo pacificar el reino y dotarlo de leyes nuevas y, por si fuera poco, proseguir con éxito la reconquista, reiniciando así el enfrentamiento por el control de la orilla europea del Estrecho de Gibraltar, tema que los histo- riadores llamamos desde hace tiempo la “batalla del Estrecho”. Vamos a tratar brevemente de este asunto que culminaría con la conquista de Algeciras que fue, junto con la de Tarifa, conquista- da en 1292, la llave del acceso a la Península. LA CRUZADA DE ALFONSO X CONTRA ÁFRICA Al acceder al trono Alfonso X el 1º de junio de 1252, todo lo que quedaba de al-Andalus estaba sometido por tributo al rey de Castilla. Era tiempo de pensar en el encargo que su padre Fernando III le hiciera en su lecho de muerte: proseguir la guerra contra los musulmanes en África. Abstract The prediction of freight congestion (cargo peaks) is an important tool for decision making and it is this paper’s main object of study. Forecasting freight flows can be a useful tool for the whole logistics chain. In this work, a complete methodology is presented in order to obtain the best model to predict freight congestion situations at ports. The prediction is modeled as a classification problem and different approaches are tested (k-Nearest Neighbors, Bayes classifier and Artificial Neural Networks). A panel of different experts (post–hoc methods of Friedman test) has been developed in order to select the best model. The proposed methodology is applied in the Strait of Gibraltar’s logistics hub with a study case being undertaken in Port of Algeciras Bay. The results obtained reveal the efficiency of the presented models that can be applied to improve daily operations planning. -

2. Tipología de suelos en la comunidad andaluza 25 2.2. SUELOS DE LA PROVINCIA DE CÁDIZ. TIPOS PRINCIPALES Y CARACTERÍSTICAS DE LOS MISMOS En la provincia de Cádiz pueden distinguir una serie de regiones naturales que, si bien no separadas entre sí por ningún accidente geográfico, son diferentes por su geología, clima, suelos, vegetación, etc. Estas regiones o comarcas naturales son: La Serranía de Grazalema, Las Sierras Subbéticas del Norte, las Sierras y Colinas del Campo de Gibraltar, La Campiña y las Costas. Para estudiar los suelos de esta provincia la dividiremos en estas regiones naturales. 2.2.1. Suelos de la Serranía de Grazalema Los suelos de la Serranía de Grazalema son en general, de escaso desarrollo, ocupan siempre áreas pequeñas y constituyen con frecuencia formaciones edáficas aisladas. Ello es debido al accidentado relieve de la región que dificulta la formación del suelo y la mayoría de las veces, promociona su erosión. Así, los suelos más abundantes en esta comarca son Leptosoles líticos . Existen también Luvisoles relictos rellenando huecos y hendiduras de rocas, Regosoles y Cambisoles sobre calizas, areniscas silíceas y materiales triásicos. Todos ellos muestran como carácter general más acusado, el constituir formaciones ais ladas y pedregos as . Los suelos de esta región dependen, además de la vegetación y el microclima, sobre todo de la altitud, la topografía y el substrato geológico. Los principales suelos son: Leptosoles líticos, réndsicos y úmbricos. Luvisoles cálcicos. Regosoles calcáricos. Cambisoles calcáricos, gléicos y eútricos. 2.2.1.1.- Leptosoles En Grazalema aparecen distintos suelos sobre pendientes acusadas que alcanzan poco desarrollo y cuyo material orgánico e inorgánico está poco descompuesto. -

Reference 64-19 ― i ― FOREWORD Field participation in the International Indian Ocean Expedition by scientists and research vessels of the University of California's Scripps Institution of Oceanography comprises three multi- program investigations: MONSOON (1960-1), LUSIAD (1962-3) and DODO (1964). All three expeditions, though first broadly outlined in 1959, lie within the cooperative international exploration of the Indian Ocean being sponsored by the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research and UNESCO. Therefore, though original schedules have to date been met, the programs have in fact been influenced and modified by the plans, interests and findings of other agencies and laboratories, and direct participation by marine scientists, students and trainees from other areas has been welcomed. Although the final SIO IIOE cruise, DODO, is just underway, a preliminary report on some generalized results of the first two expeditions seems appropriate now, with the clear understanding that many conclusions stated here may indeed be premature. Final analyses, syntheses and results will appear in more specialized formal publications and in the proposed SCOR-sponsored atlases which eventually will summarize Indian Ocean Expedition findings. At Scripps Institution, it is customary to give names, rather than number designations, to the major expeditions. The 1960-1 investigation, 3 ½ months in the Indian Ocean, embraced the first SIO field work in the "monsoon seas". It was funded primarily by the Office of Naval Research of the Navy Department, with auxiliary support for personnel and special equipment from the Bureau of Ships and the National Science Foundation.
