Rusch, Examination Committee Chair Professor of Educational Leadership University of Nevada, Las Vegas The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine and analyze tefilla (prayer) programs in three Jewish community high schools, as well as professional leadership practices in these schools as they related to prayer. The questions that guided this research were: • What does prayer education and practice look like in Jewish community high schools? • How is prayer education and practice perceived by key constituencies in Jewish community high schools? • How do educators and students in Jewish community high schools describe authentic prayer? Site observations, interviews with students, faculty, and administration, as well as data collected from sources such as school websites and marketing materials were used to create narrative portraits of the schools’ tefilla programs and a cross-case analysis of the programs using the portraiture methodology of Sarah Lawrence-Lightfoot. Marshall and Rossman’s seven phases for analytical procedures guided the research analysis, and Barry Chazan’s philosophy of Informal Jewish Education was used as an interpretive framework for analyzing the case studies. The research infers implications for Jewish iii philanthropic organizations, Jewish teacher training programs, researchers, and site-based educational leadership interested in prayer improvement efforts in Jewish community high schools. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Many people helped me earn my doctorate.   • For Shabbat Morning Prayers. As I Explain On
    Here is an abridged Matbeah – service – for Shabbat morning prayers. As I explain on our homepage, while most of this abridged service is designed as if one is davening – praying – alone, I have included the recitation of Mourner’s Kaddish for those who are in mourning or observing Yahrzeit. Ideally, all of us will begin praying at 9:30am on Shabbat morning with a kavannah – intentionality – towards one another. In this way, we will form a community even if we are not standing together in the sanctuary. Tap below to optimize your machine!” I tapped. “Wow! You’ve got 5 memory-hungry programs hogging up your memory! Let’s see what we can you about this! T Tap below to improve it! This won’t affect your personal data.” I tap the button. Immediately, circles spin on my screen, and little flashes, like so many drops of sweat, seem to spin off the circles as we valiantly do battle with those memory-hugging hogs. And then, in quick succession, “10 background apps closed.” “100 MB of storage space freed up.” “No abnormal battery use detected.” “No app crashes detected.” “No malware apps detected.” “Virus scanning turned on.” “Total freed up – 2.5 GB since you started using Device Maintenance!” And at the top the screen, inside a large circle throb the words: “100 – Excellent! Your device had been optimized.” I felt good about that. It’s amazing how far a little encouragement goes – even from an inanimate machine. “Moshe wrote their goings forth, according to their journeys at the bidding of Hashem, and these were their journeys according to their goings forth.” In the first half of this verse, Hashem tells Moshe to encourage the people and write that all their “goings forth” were only for the goal of reaching Eretz Yisrael — the destination of all their “journeyings.” That is why in the first half of the sentence, “goings forth” precedes the word “journeys.” Without that encouragement to the Jewish People in the desert, their journeyings seemed like nothing more than an incessant road-trip.

    The Way to the Tree of Life Jewish practice entails fulfilling many laws. Our diet is limited, our days to work are defined, and every aspect of life has governing directives. Is observance of all the laws easy? Is a perfectly righteous life close to our heart and near to our limbs? A righteous life seems to be an impossible goal! However, in the Torah, our great teacher Moshe, Moses, declared that perfect fulfillment of all religious law is very near and easy for each of us. This is what the Sages taught: If you are riding along on a donkey and the time for prayer arrives, dismount [and pray]. And if you cannot dismount because you are distracted by worries about the safety of the money you have in your baggage, or you are afraid for your safety, pray while you are riding. Rabbi Yohanan said: We learn from this teaching that a person should be mindful and undistracted during prayer before God. Abba Shaul said when a person prays with concentration and direction (kavanah), that person’s prayers will surely be answered, as it says, You will direct their mind and You will listen to their prayer… (Psalms 10:17) And nobody had kavanah in their prayer like our Father Abraham, which we see from the fact that he said: Far be it from you to do a thing like that! (Genesis 18:25) [Midrash Tanhuma, Hayyei Sarah #1] COMMENTARY: The prooftext for Abraham’s exemplary concentration and intention during prayer – his kavanah – is unusual, since it is not a verse from a prayer, but a verse from an argument that Abraham is having with God! Here is the full context: Then God said, “The outrage of Sodom and Gomorrah is so great, and their sin is so grave! LIEBMAN NATURE OF RECONSTRUCTIONISM • ITS HISTORY AND INSTITUTIONS • ITS CONSTITUENCY • AS IDEOLOGY OF AMERICAN JUDAISM • FOLK AND ELITE RELIGION IN AMERICAN JUDAISM INTRODUCTION JLHE RECONSTRUCTIONIST MOVEMENT deserves more serious and systematic study than it has been given. It has recently laid claim to the status of denomination, the fourth in American Judaism, along with Orthodoxy, Conservatism, and Reform. Its founder, Mordecai M. Kaplan, probably is the most creative Jewish thinker to concern himself with a program for American Judaism. He is one of the few intellectuals in Jewish life who have given serious consideration to Jewish tradition, American philosophical thought, and the experiences of the American Jew, and confronted each with the other. Reconstructionism is the only religious party in Jewish life whose origins are entirely American and whose leading personalities view Judaism from the perspective of the exclusively American Jewish experience.
