The Guardians will send for you…………… HAL: Holy crap. (title card) NARRATOR: Long ago, a race of sentient beings, called The Guardians, created the Green Lantern Corps, a interstellar group of space-police who protect the universe from anything evil. The Guardians found the green element, and used it to create the green lantern power battery. The battery would charge any of the Green Lantern Corps power rings, which would create anything the Green Lantern user of that ring wanted. The battery also contained all the known history of the cosmos. But, like all things, the battery had its weakness, the color yellow, the one part of the light spectrum that could resist the color green. The most concentrated source of yellow in the universe is the yellow element, which The Guardians hid in another dimension thousands of years ago. What follows is the downfall of The Green Lantern Corps, and how they rose up to face evil, once again. (THEME SONG) GANTHET (ON ANNOUCER): Senior Green Lanterns Abin Sur, Sinestro, Kilowog, Tomar Re, and Chip, please report to the meeting room immediately. SINESTRO: What do you think is going on now, guys? Seriously, the gnomes are calling us nearly every day now. ABIN SUR: Sinestro, there is a crisis brewing. Ever since Kan Jar Ro found the yellow element, the whole corps has been in turmoil. SINESTRO: Think about it, Abin. The gnomes haven’t been in the field for millennia, you really think they know what they’re doing. ABIN SUR: It’s The Guardians, of course I know they know, you should to. SINESTRO(WHISPERS TO SELF): Fine, its your funeral. NARRATOR: Those words were too true. (inside meeting room) APPA : You Senior Lanterns have been called here for a very important reason. Kan Jar Ro has obtained the yellow element, but, we have learned that he will be in Sector 2814, on the planet Toran tomorrow. One of you must infiltrate his ship and find the yellow element. Once found, it must be brought back here immediately. Any volunteers? ABIN SUR: I will, Appa Ali Epsa. This corps is everything to me, I will not let it fall. GANTHET: We shall put to a vote. I say yes. (Every Guardian agrees) APPA: Well, it has been decided. Abin Sur will once again save the universe. SINESTRO(TO SELF): And earn more bragging rights. NARRATOR: Abin Sur was one of the greatest Green Lanterns of all time. He had saved the universe on numerous occasions. But this adventure would be his last. KILOWOG: Good luck, Abin. I know you won’t fail The Guardians. ABIN SUR: Thank you, Kilowog. SINESTRO: Are you crazy!!?!! ABIN SUR: What? SINESTRO: Do want to be killed? You do realize that Kutch is on that ship. NARRATOR: Kutch was a squid-man who worked for Kan Jo Ro, the warlord. He could send 100 volts of lightning to you in half a second. ABIN SUR: Yes, Sinestro, I do. But the ring is more powerful than him. SINESTRO: All you want is the fame. ABIN SUR: No, that’s what you want. NARRATOR: Abin Sur and Sinestro never got along. Abin Sur wanted peace and prosperity through the universe, Sinestro wanted that, but in a quite different way. (ABOARD KAN JAR RO’S SHIP) KAN JAR RO: Ah, the yellow element. Surely the rings won’t stop me now. I’m brilliant, I have successfully almost taken control of the universe!!!!!!! KAN JAR RO’S ASSISTANT: You haven’t actually taken control yet, sir. KAN JAR RO: SHUT UP!!!!!! KAN JAR RO’S ASSISTANT: SORRY SIR!!! KAN JAR RO: Why do I pay you? Ugh, I forgive you if I must. KAN JAR RO’S ASSISTANT: Thank you sir. KAN JAR RO: But under one condition. KAN JAR RO’S ASSISTANT: What? KAN JAR RO: Get off my ship, NOW!!!! (KAN JO RO KICKS AND KNOCKS OUT HIS ASSISTANT) KAN JAR RO: You(points at Abin Sur in disguise), take the yellow element to the safe room. ABIN SUR IN DISGUISE: Yes, sir NARRATOR: Whlie about to escape to the warship dock, Abin Sur crossed paths with the wrong person, Kutch, who could smell Abin Sur’s scent from a mile away. KUTCH: You!!!! (CUT TO BLACK) .

  • Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

The figure of the “metahuman,” the human with superpowers and purpose, embodies the transfigured nerd whose defects—intellect, swarm-behavior, abnormality, flux, and love of machines—become virtues of survival in the twenty-first century. The conflict among capitalism, fascism, and communism, which drove the Cold War and its immediate aftermath, also drove the Golden and Silver Ages of Comics. In the era of planetary emergency, these forces reconfigure themselves as different versions of world-destruction. The metahuman also signifies going “beyond” these economic and political systems into orders that preserve democracy without destroying the biosphere. Therefore, the styles of metahuman figuration represent an appeal to tradition and a technique of transformation. I call these strategies the iconic style and metamorphic style. The iconic style, more typical of DC Comics, makes the hero an icon of virtue, and metahuman powers manifest as visible signs: the “S” of Superman, the tiara and golden lasso of Wonder Woman.

Blackest Night / Brightest Day Jumpchain What is death in a world like this one? Great heroes and villains alike have tasted the sweet kiss of oblivion, both deserving and not. Yet death has also been defied, and many more have returned to life through circumstance or miracle. Two heroes in particular – Hal Jordan, a Green Lantern of Earth, and Barry Allen, The Flash, both ponder this together as they talk over the gravestone of Bruce Wayne. Both had died and returned to life before. And soon, many more will return as well...but not in a way they or anyone else would expect. Recently, the Green Lantern Corps, a peacekeeping organization created by the self-touted Guardians of the Universe, have been at war with the Sinestro Corps founded by its namesake rogue who fell from grace in the past. The Entity of Death, Nekron, acting through the villain Death’s Hand, has prepared to unleash a plague on the entire universe. • Neville Page on Designing the Green Lantern Corps!
Neville Page on Designing the Green Lantern Corps! The film-makers came to Page with a wishlist of Green Lanterns Page is credited as lead creature designer, and he worked on a lot of the creatures of the ring-wearing space cop legion, the Green Lantern Corps. Page worked on a ton of different aliens who are members of the Corps, but he cautions: "I didn't get the impression they're really showcased, other than Kilowog and Tomar-Re." He's also not sure which Lanterns made it into the final film. In general, creature designers will create a ton of concepts, and many of them will wind up on the cutting-room floor, even if they get to the stage of being animated. For the most part, when working on these classic characters, he followed the way they'd been depicted in the comics over the years. "The design concepts are so great, and so different than what I would ever [normally] do." Although sometimes, the depiction has been inconsistent enough that you have to make some choices. Like the drill sergeant Kilowog, for example — at various times in the comics, he's looked more rhinoceros- faced or pig-faced. How to make a character like Kilowog sympathetic instead of scary Page is used to designing terrifying creatures like the Cloverfield monster — so how does he approach an alien like Kilowog, who's still menacing-looking but is supposed to be a friend? Page says it would be absolutely wrong to try and make Kilowog look more sympathetic — that should come from the way he's animated, and the voice actor who brings the character to life.

The Green Lanterns, on the other hand, represent the triumph of willpower or reason over emotion and seek to overcome and stifl e these emotional states.2 The confl ict between the various lantern corps, while provid- ing an interesting series of stories, also sets the stage for thinking about one of the most long-standing questions in ethics: What role should emotion play in moral reasoning? 7 CCH001.inddH001.indd 7 33/14/11/14/11 88:42:24:42:24 AAMM 8 JASON SOUTHWORTH Color-Coded Morality With the exception of the Indigo Lanterns (who don’t speak a language that can be translated by a Green Lantern power ring, much less your average comics reader), the representa- tives of the new color corps all make the case that acting out their sections of the emotional spectrum is the only way to achieve justice.
