I was interested in this one because I wanted to see the Guardians working with the X-men, and even if I was a little bit lost at the beggining, I really enjoyed. The character roster and art work is pretty good and may I say the variant covers, which feature a member from each team paired together which are pretty epic. May the gaming gods bring you glory. Notify me of new posts via email. My favorite aspect was the interactions between the two teams, like Angel and Iceman being terrified of Groot or a quiet exchange between X and Drax. The Guardians are alarmed and move to action when an alien ship enters Earth's atmosphere, and from there their story ties into the X-Men's. But when the threat the Trio-For-Hire faced resurfaces in the modern day, Deadpool must track down his old Find your Of course he wants to be with him. This was a great crossover story and it inspired a follow-up in The Black Vortex, which the reader hopes to read in its entirety soon. That being said, this is still one of my favorite on-going series right now. Poor teenage Jean Grey is suddenly put on trial by the dudes from the Shi'ar for something that she technically hasn't done yet. She absorbs and emits the psy-energy of people surrounding her, she combines her telekinesis with her telepathy. Add to the mixture, J- Son, Peter's father, showing up and pretending to be caring about Jean and the Phoenix, but having an ulterior motive of course As the Guardians receive the news of Jean Greys reappearance and detect an alien ship close to Earth, they head there themselvese. There's a tendency to go back to the P By and large, I'm not a huge fan of the darker and whinier direction X-Men has gone in recent years which is fine--just because it's not written for me doesn't make it bad, as Mark Waid very astutely once said , but this story felt like a little bit of a throwback to the types of X-Men tales I enjoy: lots of action, sure, but a lot of quiet, character-building moments where people are just talking and interacting and being pardon the word choice human. The Shi'ar Empire, who has been on-again, off-again friends and foes of the X-Men for years, finds out that a young Jean Grey has been brought forward from the past. And the art! Heck, even Hank whose future self is responsible for this whole clusterfuck anyway doesn't get enough page time to reflect on his role. I was really excited about that, but that part wasn't in this comic book. No recent wiki edits to this page. Abstract Established in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a ubiquitous transmedia sensation. Its uniquely interwoven narrative provides auspicious grounds for scholarly consideration. The franchise conscientiously presents larger-than-life superheroes as complex and incredibly emotional individuals who form profound interpersonal relationships with one another. This thesis explores Sarah Hagelin’s concept of resistant vulnerability, which she defines as a “shared human experience,” as it manifests in the substantial relationships that Steve Rogers (Captain America) cultivates throughout the Captain America narrative (11). This project focuses on Steve’s relationships with the following characters: Agent Peggy Carter, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier).

  • Cold War Under the Ice
WeissCold War Under the Ice Cold War Under the Ice: The Army’s Bid for a Long-Range Nuclear Role, 1959–1963 ✣ Erik D. Weiss ilitary preparations for the Cold War extended to even the most frigidM environments on earth. The Arctic holds both fascination and fear in its stark expanses and unforgiving climate. In the superpower contest, the harsh, icy wastelands of the north presented an intriguing, barren region that technology could seek to conquer. Although the new ability to harness nu- clear energy revolutionized arctic research, the North Greenland ice cap also held more challenging options for U.S. Cold War strategists. Ice could be molded and carved. Ice tunnels could facilitate transport and offer seclusion, isolation, and a hidden presence. No weapon would have required more mo- bility and concealment than a system of intermediate range ballistic missiles (IRBMs) armed with nuclear warheads. The U.S. Army’s proposal to deploy “Iceworm” mobile IRBMs came to light in a recently declassiªed set of documents obtained by the Danish Insti- tute of International Affairs in connection with a larger study in 1997 on Greenland during the Cold War.1 Because scholars have not yet studied the Iceworm concept per se, this article seeks to place it within the context of the Cold War. Iceworm ªlled the perceived need for IRBM forces after the Soviet launch of Sputnik in 1957, an event that threatened the United States and the rest of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) with destruction by intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and eroded European conªdence in NATO’s deterrent posture.

  • Creating a Superheroine: a Rhetorical Analysis of the X-Men Comic Books
CREATING A SUPERHEROINE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE X-MEN COMIC BOOKS by Tonya R. Powers A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS Major Subject: Communication West Texas A&M University Canyon, Texas August, 2016 Approved: __________________________________________________________ [Chair, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Head, Major Department] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Fine Arts and Humanities] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Graduate School] [Date] ii ABSTRACT This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of a two-year X-Men comic book publication that features an entirely female cast. This research was conducted using Kenneth Burke’s theory of terministic screens to evaluate how the authors and artists created the comic books. Sonja Foss’s description of cluster criticism is used to determine key terms in the series and how they were contributed to the creation of characters. I also used visual rhetoric to understand how comic book structure and conventions impacted the visual creation of superheroines. The results indicate that while these superheroines are multi- dimensional characters, they are still created within a male standard of what constitutes a hero. The female characters in the series point to an awareness of diversity in the comic book universe. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I wish to thank my thesis committee chair, Dr. Hanson, for being supportive of me within the last year. Your guidance and pushes in the right direction has made the completion of this thesis possible. You make me understand the kind of educator I wish to be. • The Phoenix/Jean Grey Across Time and Media Lenise Prater Films
Gender and Power: The Phoenix/Jean Grey across Time and Media Lenise Prater Films based on comic books have been box-office successes in recent years, particularly the X-Men franchise, which is comprised of a trilogy and two prequels,1 and the X-Men trilogy. Through the characters of Jean Grey and Rogue these films represent women as largely unable to control their powers, and subsequently as significantly dangerous to men.2 Unfortunate- ly, these problematic representations of women are often explained, or even justified, by audience members who tacitly assume, given these films are based on comics of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, that these films will feature more conservative representations of gender. Even bloggers and journalists familiar with comic books offhandedly argue that the sexism in the movies is based on the sexism in the original comics. Journalist Jeff Al- exander, for example, argues that the inclusion of strong women in comic book movies is “an uphill battle,” because “so much of the original comic- book source material is inherently sexist and objectifying to begin with.”3 Similarly, blogger Wraith24, in a discussion of promotional poster for The Avengers, concludes “that even in 2012, the influences of old sexist comics is still quite prevalent.”4 Indeed, it would not, for example, be readily ac- ceptable to name a group of men and women “X-Men” in the year 2001, as is the case with the first movie, because using “man” to describe a group that is partly comprised of women does not make sense as it did in the COLLOQUY text theory critique 24 (2012).
