Talk about growing up in Smithton, Shirley Jones: A Memoir. First, where is it? It's a very small town, residents. And my Shirley Jones: A Memoir who came over from Wales when he was about four years old decided to build a brewery. It was the Jones Brewing and he built it in this little, tiny town and employed most of the town. It was great. I had wished I could raise my kids in a town like that. Our public school had two grades in one room and one teacher you know, 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th and then the high school was just residents in the high school. You know my class And we had to take a little bus to go outside the little town to go to the high school. And my class was only about 55 altogether, you know, and I try to go to the class reunion every year. JONES Oh, absolutely, absolutely, although I think I always missed having brothers and sisters, but I had so many cousins and everybody lived so close And I was a big animal nut, you know. I raised everything from birds to mice to snakes you name it and wanted to be a Shirley Jones: A Memoir all my life. It was a gift and I was singing when I was, you know, three, four, five years old the youngest member of the church choir at age six in my little town. And I thought everybody could sing, you know, it was given to me. And I sang for all of the, you know, the family events and all the local, the Lions Club and The Rotary Club, you know, in town. JONES And then during the summers I would go Shirley Jones: A Memoir a place called the Pittsburgh Playhouse and study drama and dance and so on you know and loved performing. But I still had this dream to become a veterinarian so I was very mixed about what I was going to do. REHM Interesting. You Shirley Jones: A Memoir closer to your father than to your mother? I mean, she was, you know, and I was an only child and so was I. I was strong, too. So in other words, we butted heads quite Shirley Jones: A Memoir bit, yeah exactly. And my father was the sweetheart of the world. I dedicated my book to my father. I adored him but he died at 49 as did my husband Jack Cassidy die at So I lost two incredible men at that age. He was a heavy smoker and actually I hate to say this, but he died of a doctor's mistake because he went in, had the surgery, had the tumor removed and he was doing well. And suddenly, the doctor that did this surgery was out on another occasion and Shirley Jones: A Memoir was sort of just a young intern Shirley Jones: A Memoir and his other lung started to fill Shirley Jones: A Memoir. Jack was a heavy smoker, too. It was interesting 'cause actually cigarettes killed both Jack and my father. Jack was smoking in his apartment. We were separated Shirley Jones: A Memoir this time and a cigarette had gone into the naugahyde couch and he went out to dinner with some friends, came back after dinner, fell asleep on the couch. REHM Horrible. But I want to go back a bit because, I mean, the story of your getting these lead singing roles was sort of magical. Again, you know, my life has been extraordinary. It really has been, Diane. That was our holiday. And I just graduated high school and I was on my way to college to become a veterinarian. This was July. I was going to college in the fall and I knew this pianist that I'd worked with at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. So I called him and he said, come on, Shirl, come on up, we'll sing a couple of tunes, you know. They had about three shows running on Broadway at that time and their shows ran so long they had to keep replacing Shirley Jones: A Memoir people all the time. I was this little kid from a small town. JONES Anyway, he talked me into going and singing and I stood in line with everybody else, got to the stage, sang for the casting director and he said, Miss Jones, could you wait a few moments? Rodgers just happens to be across the street rehearsing his orchestra for "Oklahoma" which was about to open at City Center and go out on another tour. And all of a sudden, down the aisle comes this gentleman and he said, Miss Jones? And I said, yes. I said, what Shirley Jones: A Memoir you say your name was again? He said, Richard Rodgers. Then I sang "Lover" in a high soprano key and I sang a little song that my pianist had written just for me, and three songs. And he said, could you wait about 20 minutes? I'm going to call my partner, Oscar Hammerstein at home. He canceled the rest of the auditions for the day. You know, it's my first audition anywhere, anyplace Now my pianist said, Shirley, I hate to do this to you, but I have to leave. I have an airplane to catch. It was some sort of holiday. And Rodgers said, never mind, we'll think of something. I waited. Down the aisle finally comes this very tall gentleman by the name of Hammerstein and he said, Miss Jones, do you know the score of "Oklahoma"? And I said, well, I said, I might know some of the music, but I don't know the words. And I'm talking to the lyricist, you understand. I happen to have a Shirley Jones: A Memoir here. I said, but Mr. Hammerstein, my pianist had to leave. I have no one to play. And Rodgers said, we have the full City Center Symphony across the street. He took me across the street. I still Shirley Jones: A Memoir read music, but I had such an ear, you know. Again, Shirley Jones: A Memoir was a gift that was given to me. I would hear a song once and I was able to sing it, you know, so I had that, too. I had this really good ear for the sound. REHM So you just began doing this. You had no fright on the stage? I was so young. I'd been in the business such a short time, I thought it happened to everybody. I didn't know that I was -- you know. Show business is easy. I don't know what people are talking about, you know. Shirley Jones, and when we come back, we'll talk more, hear more of her beautiful voice and take your calls. Stay with us. She not only has that voice, she has acting chops as well. You were the first and only singer to be put under personal contract with Rogers and Hammerstein. Tell me about that. When they -- my first show that they put me in was "South Pacific" and it was the last three of the Broadway Company. Mary Martin was no longer in it. Shirley Jones : A Memoir - -

After winning a beauty contest she attracted the likes of Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein in her first audition, and the rest is history. She became the star of their musicals and road shows. At one point Ms. Jones talks about the self involved actors and their insecurities. Then she proceeds to fall in love with probably the most narcissistic, self centered, drunken womanizer, Jack Cassidy. I believe her love for him was real, but she paid a terribly high price. For some reason Ms. Jones needs to strip herself of her goody Shirley Jones: A Memoir shoes image in the most graphic of depictions. I didn't need to know all about the details of her sexuality and her actions. Just sing, Shirley!!!! View all 5 comments. Oct 09, Connie Curtis rated it it was ok. I never Shirley Jones: A Memoir I'd be listening to a book where Mrs. Partridge is bragging about how sexual she is and describing how she masturbates. For the record, I read other reviews and was ready to fast forward over the grisly details of how she pleasures herself even today. When she launched into it, I skipped that rather lengthy part until she was through. I'll never understand Shirley Jones: A Memoir people want to ruin their reputations when they Shirley Jones: A Memoir known for being a clean goody-goody or a decent person. What's s Wow. What's so wrong with that? People love to destroy that reputation and make sure we know they aren't really that good or clean or moral in person. Shirley Jones certainly does that in this book. I didn't want to hear about the size of her sons' and husband's genitals. I wanted to hear more stories and anecdotes. She went on about how nearly every man she's ever met has hit on her and how obsessed she was and still is with her former husband, Jack Cassidy, a true cad if there ever was one. I felt bad for her currant husband as she describes Jack as the love of her life. I guess Marty's chopped liver? I'm always disappointed when people fall from the pedestal we've placed them on, because we like having someone we think we can look up to. Some things should be kept private. Shirley Jones clearly has no privacy issues. I have lost respect for her, for her lack of decency and her assumption that we wanted to know all these details of her very private life. Someday, she may be very embarrassed by what she has blabbed about herself and others in this memoir. Tabloids spray garbage at us all the time about the private lives of celebrities. The sad thing is, willingly. View 1 comment. This book was disappointing. I really looked forward to this book because I wanted to learn more about Shirley Jones since I only knew her from The Partridge Family. This book was poorly written - no way around that. Shirley's co-author didn't do her any favors. It reads like a freshman paper. It rambles and repeats. This Shirley Jones: A Memoir is really about Shirley and Jack Cassidy. We get it. You're still caught in the web of dysfunction known as Jack Cassidy. M This book was disappointing. Jones reveals Shirley Jones: A Memoir too much personal information about her sex life. It's sad because she comes across as the "good" girl who wants so badly to be considered a "bad" girl that she tries too hard. She shares very little about this time. Instead, Shirley Jones: A Memoir dwells on telling a one-sided story about a man who is no longer here to defend himself. For someone whose entire career came so easily to her, writing sure didn't. I was thoroughly disappointed in this book. View all 4 comments. Sep 08, Debbie rated it it was ok Shelves: autobiography-memoirnonfiction. Is there a way to wash my eyes out with soap? Can I clean out my mind and unread what I just read? Honestly, who wants Shirley Jones to explain her masturbatory techniques in detail? Did I need to know that David Cassidy inherited his donkey- sized penis from his father? This is one of those misguided memoirs, where salacious details are thrown onto almost every page to up book sales. Admittedly, it works.
