Joseph F.X. McCarthy Stephen Moylan: An American Military Career STEPHEN MOYLAN An American Military Career BACKGROUND Stephen Moylan immigrated to America in 1768, where he became one of the Philadelphia Irish who played leadership roles in the American Revolution. Moylan’s particular activity was in the Continental Army, which he served effectively as a citizen soldier. His career as staff and line officer illustrates very well the inchoate growing pains of our country’s armed forces. It also shows a man committed to his adopted United States, and still a fond son of his native Ireland. He provides us with an interesting example of the paths open to men of talent in the critical years of the American Revolution. In 1737, Stephen was born in Cork, a son of John Moylan and Mary Doran. The Moylans and Dorans were merchant families, among the most prosperous Catholic families in Cork. The penal code barred Irish Catholics from being educated in Ireland, but the family followed a tradition among Irish families that could afford the measure. They sent their sons to France for their formal education. According to a U.S. Army Unit History, Stephen “was educated by Jesuits in Paris”. An uncle, Fr. Patrick Doran, S.J., was active in France, and it is likely that he was in touch with Stephen during his student days. It is certain that Father Doran helped Stephen’s brother, Francis Moylan (1735-1815) who was a student in Paris. Fr. Doran helped the young man decide to become a priest for his home diocese of Cork, rather than for a monastic order. -

The Irish Catholic Episcopal Corps, 1657 – 1829: a Prosopographical Analysis
THE IRISH CATHOLIC EPISCOPAL CORPS, 1657 – 1829: A PROSOPOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS VOLUME 1 OF 2 BY ERIC A. DERR THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF PHD DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY NATIONAL UNIVERISTY OF IRELAND MAYNOOTH SUPERVISOR OF RESEARCH: DR. THOMAS O’CONNOR NOVEMBER 2013 Abstract This study explores, reconstructs and evaluates the social, political, educational and economic worlds of the Irish Catholic episcopal corps appointed between 1657 and 1829 by creating a prosopographical profile of this episcopal cohort. The central aim of this study is to reconstruct the profile of this episcopate to serve as a context to evaluate the ‘achievements’ of the four episcopal generations that emerged: 1657-1684; 1685- 1766; 1767-1800 and 1801-1829. The first generation of Irish bishops were largely influenced by the complex political and religious situation of Ireland following the Cromwellian wars and Interregnum. This episcopal cohort sought greater engagement with the restored Stuart Court while at the same time solidified their links with continental agencies. With the accession of James II (1685), a new generation of bishops emerged characterised by their loyalty to the Stuart Court and, following his exile and the enactment of new penal legislation, their ability to endure political and economic marginalisation. Through the creation of a prosopographical database, this study has nuanced and reconstructed the historical profile of the Jacobite episcopal corps and has shown that the Irish episcopate under the penal regime was not only relatively well-organised but was well-engaged in reforming the Irish church, albeit with limited resources. By the mid-eighteenth century, the post-Jacobite generation (1767-1800) emerged and were characterised by their re-organisation of the Irish Church, most notably the establishment of a domestic seminary system and the setting up and manning of a national parochial system. -

Exeat Authorization given to a priest by his bishop to serve in another diocese. Faculties Authorization given a priest by the bishop for priestly ministry in his diocese. Friar A priest or cooperator brother of the Order of Preachers. Lay Brother A term used in the past for "cooperator brother." Lay Dominican A professed member of the Dominican Laity, once called "Third Order." Mandamus The official assignment of a friar or a sister to a Communit and ministry related to the mission of the Order. -

The Catholic Association campaigned for Catholic Emancipation, a successful movement that promoted the participation of Catholic elites in the United Kingdom Parliament. In the 1840s the Friends of Repeal formed in the United States in order to support Daniel O’Connell’s Repeal Association in Ireland. This organization sought the repeal of the Act of Union of 1800, which had created the United Kingdom and dismantled the Irish Parliament. -

PETER GUILDAY March 25, 1884-July 31, 1947 Founder of The Catholic Historical Review Corresponding Member of the Academy of American Franciscan History As many readers of The Americas already know, Monsignor Peter Guilday, professor of American church history at The Catholic Univer sity of America, died in Washington, D. C, on July 31, 1947, at the age of sixty-three. His passing at the end of a long illness brought a dis tinguished career as a scholar and teacher to a close, and silenced the voice of a man who could speak, and did speak, with authority on the history of the Catholic Church in the United States. Monsignor Guilday was clearly the outstanding American historian of his generation trained at the University of Louvain. His doctoral dis sertation, the culmination of years of research, appeared in London in 1914 under the title of The English Colleges and Convents in the Cath olic Low Countries, 1558-1795. He had hoped to investigate other as pects of the history of the Church in the British Isles, but the outbreak of the first World War put an end to his plans, and obliged him in Octo ber 1914 to return home. He now accepted an instructorship in Church history at The Catholic University of America, and began at this time the association with our pontifical university which was to last until his death. With the active support of the rector, Thomas J. Shahan, he founded The Catholic His torical Review in 1915, and served as its principal editor until his retire ment from the editorial board in 1941.
